: Smoking!

02-07-2005, 09:04 PM
Well, I am once again on the path of quitting smoking! I have attempted this many times before, and the last time made it almost 6 months. I have a birthday coming up, and I started thinking about how I have been smoking 2 1/2 times longer in my life then I have not smoked! 8O

I am currently on day 2, and using the patch. I must do this. If any quiters out there have some advice, I am open to it! I want to drop these things BAD!

Bix - quitting is easy. I've done it a million times. I smoke now, but it's weird, when I lived in Japan in the late 90's -- I didn't smoke for 3 years -- everyone and their brother smoked over there. Moved back to the U.S. in 98, picked up cigars, then cigarettes, wham -- back to a full-time smoker again. I am convinced it's all in the mind my friend. I wish you luck. - Jim

Hang in there, BiXLL. It won't be easy, but it is worth every bit of the trouble. Your body will thank you and your friends will thank you. :D :D :D

Bixll, just think about how much extra mod money you'll have for the titan if you quit. :D

I like the gum better than the patch. The gum gives something to do. Hell I like th gum so much I'll smoke and chew at the sametime.

my aunt, uncle, and 2 friends that i know have tried being hypnotized to quit, and ill be damned it worked 8O . my aunt and uncle went for about 2 months of sessions before it worked. my 2 friends went together at this place were it was $75 a session but they were done with smoking in 4 sessions, still to this day none of them smoke. kinda proves that it is all in the mind. i just quit cold turkey, but that was really hard for the first week or so, especially after eating its like i needed that smoke after i ate like a dessert.
good luck and hang in there, get some motovation, like do it for your son :D

When I quit I decided that smoking was going to kill me. That was the only way I could do it. I just went cold turkey no patch or gum I just quit. I remember stages. The one month stage you convince yourself that you proved you could quit and you actually liked to smoke. At about six months you will go through the same nonsence. Just be tough the main thing is do it for you!! At one year I could no longer stand the smell of someone smoking. I really felt better more energy stronger and I didnt smell like an old wet sock anymore. Good luck

Well, I all ready had a backslide! The wife and her 21 year old daughter who has moved in here to get herself straightened out, just had a major blowout. It was BAD! I stayed out, but now have to console wife, and daughter is in the wrong, but packing to leave! I will try again, but not today, the patch is off!

02-08-2005, 01:09 AM
I know from past quits I must deal with bumps in the road, but this is a cliff I got going on here! I must remain calm to keep things on an even keel for the 12 year old if nothing else. (hows that for an excuse.....I am a failure!)

My dad has smoked since he was 16. But my mother would not allow it in the house because of her and I allergies. My grandfather smoked for most of his life also. His brother, also a smoker, died at age 37 of lung cancer. And now my grandfather at age 78 is dying of lung cancer. Not a pretty thing to watch. He was always a worker and pusher. What a great man. But now he is very weak and feable. Its very hard watching the ones you love in pain. Please for your families sake quit. Not trying to bum you out. Just hope you make the right choice. I at least admire you for trying. Dont give up.

I know that you can do it. My grandparents both smoked for over 50 years, and quit cold turkey when they found out my grandmother had lung cancer (not from smoking, though). If they can do it, then you can too!

I didn't smoke as long as you have, but enough to know quitting was not easy. I just quit cold turkey and got myself busy on other things. I also started exercising more. You'll feel much better once you notice you can breathe deeper and have more endurance (not to mention more money). If you haven't done it recently, get yourself looked at by a doctor. Then in a few months see him again and you'll most likely see some nice gains in your health if you've managed to stay smoke free. Just never forget why it is you want to stop smoking (health, family, quality of life). Each time you manage to handle stress without lighting up will make it easier to deal with the urge again in the future. All my best to you on this.

I quit 13 years ago myself. I did it cold turkey while on a remote assignment in Alaska. The hardest part was having a beer without a cigarette, but I tell you what, I toughed it out!

After quitting, the biggest thing I noticed was that my health greatly improved. Gone were the bronchitis bouts, so were the sinus infections and various other maladies that I now attribute to smoking.

It's worth it BiXLL, you can do it! :!: :!: :!:

My sister has been quit for 16 years. She tells me she coiuld smoke one the size of a telephone poll if someone would help her hold it. I guess you could say I am a casual smoker. Usually when I drink. I dip more than I smoke. Need to quit but I guess its in my head that I need it to function. I guess I'll quit when my lower jaw rots off.

Yes dude, I totally understand. Not erally the wife, she doesn't get on me about it at home. It's mostly all the stresses at work that drive me to opening up the can-o-worm dirt.

I ran across this thread and wanted share my thoughts with you.

Before you try to quit, I can only recommend you get educated. As with any enemy, the more you know about the beast (nicotine in this case), the better prepared you will be to defeat it, and endure your quit. There's no tricks, gum, patches or other gimicks, just the power of knowledge. It's just a website like this one. The method is simple...NEVER TAKE ANOTHER PUFF. You don't have to want to quit, just start reading/learning, the will power will soon follow. http://www.whyquit.com/

Free and Healing for Two Months, Twenty Four Days, 18 Hours and 25 Minutes, while extending my life expectancy 7 Days and 10 Hours, by avoiding the use of 2144 nicotine delivery devices that would have cost me $322.76.

It's absolutely amazing that I haven't been quit for three months yet, and I've already NOT SMOKED over 2000 cigarettes. Whew, that's a lot!

A habbit that I am very glad I have never taken part in. Once you quit I don't think you'll ever go back....especially after you realize what that stuff really smells like.

Wow, that is crazy. I wonder how many you smoked ever. I don't smoke regularly (and hardly irregularly, for that matter, just one once in a blue moon at a bar or something). I do smoke a pipe about once every two months though. Never felt any addiction though...

Ok BiXll...I've got it!!! Everytime your ready to buy a pack or carton of cancer sticks. Stick them in your Titan MOD fund and within a year you'll be able to afford the super charger when it comes out!! Now that's motivation!!!!

I smoked about a pack a day, maybe about 25 cigarettes on average.

It really does stink. I can now walk in a store and easily point out the smokers just by walking near them. I had to go wash everything in my closet over again because of the smell. I'm also going to repaint the inside of my house because I can still detect it from time to time. lol

Having quit recently, and not of my own accord, I can say one thing about quitting on your own. You have to be ready and willing to quit first. I tried 3 times unsuccessfully before I had no choice but to quit. I wish you luck Bixll, I know you can do it and with a support group like this it will be that much easier.

I quit about 3 years ago as well... and I do agree that you can do it thru support, it also helps if your spouse doesn't smoke.... I know that was one of my biggest battles until I met someone who doesn't. Makes quiting much easier...

My wife used to smoke and she quit cold turkey. I think it was a major reaason I smoked too.(cause they were always in the house)Plus I guess it helped considering we were trying to get pregnant. Thank goodness she quit cause we found out about 9 weeks ago that there is a little ttammunek04 on the way!! It will be our first! As for the smell, it nearly gags me now when I smell it. A majority of the people I work with smoke and boy, I can tell when the go to the smoke shack! They all smell like stale cancer sticks. This may be blunt but, Bixll just think every time you light up, that's another nail in your coffin. As for chewing, I have considerably cut back. I dip once a day now. I guess I'm slowly weening myself.

I quit 3 times. The first time (smoked for 10 yrs) a female got me smoking again (don't ask.) quit for 2 1/2 years that time. The second time I quit was only for 2 weeks. Scuffing in new DOT tires in the rain on a Kawasaki ZX-7 so I could race got me started again.(it was HAIRY 8O ) The last time, 8 yrs ago, it stuck. I always quit cold turkey (ok, i cut down first)and the last time was definitely the hardest. About 17 yrs of smoking at that point. To stay away from the smokes, I ate Fireballs (you know those red hot jawbreaker things?) Hell on the teeth probably, but it worked for me. My sugestion when you try again... find something like I did to stick in your mouth (Kojac used lollypops) and go for it. Good luck!

Right there with you bud,I quit three months ago.Chewing lots of gum now, hang in there. You just have to make up your mind that you want to quit,my mom quit 10 years ago and still gets the craving now and then.Keeping busy seems to help, and don't let the stress factor get you, find something you enjoy doing and use it to relieve stress. When I get stressed I just go to the coast and fish, even if I don't catch anything its nice to just be near the water.Must be a zen thing? Quit in Stages.
Make it Difficult to Smoke.
Example: Stage one - No Smoking in the House;
Stg 2) No smoking in the Titan (or other Vehicles)
Stg 3) No Smoking at work.
...and so on, before you know it, you've Reduced your intake (feeling better), and the Patches/Gum will be More Efffective!

I Cheated! I Started "Dipping"! :beating:
I Quit a 22year habit for another that is Harder to Quit (more Nicotine intake).

I'm currently working on my Stages.

Good Luck!

Hang in there BiXLL we're all pullin for you. Not much I can add to all the good advice above. Take time for wifey, make time for yourself and remember that the wife's-daughter thing isn't forever. Any time you think it'll make you feel better feel free to PM I can tell you stories about having to deal with boneheaded adolescents that'll make you forget all about your step-daughter (or at least give you some comfort that you're not alone).

And KYTitan is right, I think you should get a big jug label it "Stillen Supercharger Fund" and every day take your cig money and put it in there instead.

Good luck man!

Someone once said that you quit smoking everytime you put one out, and the trick is to not fire another one up later. I've been smoking for 30 years, and I've been considering quitting, also. I quit drinking about 9 years ago, and haven't missed it at all. It's all about self-discipline. I'm rooting for ya, BiXLL. Good luck!

I wonder from time to time what it would have been like to know my grandpa. He smoked most of his life. He died when my mom was 9. He quit smoking about a year before he died but by then it was too late. When I hear my mom talk about her parents, she talks about her dad as being the kind one. Her mom was also kind but when grandpa died she didn't really deal with it. She became difficult to live with. Discipline changed, of course their financial situation changed. Mom grew up under poor circumstances after that. Every once in a while I get the feeling that he's around. I think I would much rather have had him around in person.
