: 17's or 18's?
kevdizzle 03-02-2006, 11:39 PM This dilema has been depriving me of sleep since I got my Titan. I cannot decide whether or not I want 17"or 18" rims on my truck. I have 17"s now and Im going to put 35's on them with the CST lift. Im going to offroad, but not too often. I want it to look good, but I do offroad HARD, what are most of you guys putting on, 17's or 18's???

rcantu 03-03-2006, 12:27 AM I've seem more 17s but I think it's due to more wheel and tire selections. Price would be lower too.
of course I was odd and went 22's.
chasenme 03-03-2006, 02:31 AM Ya i went with 17's I wanted more tire then wheel just for the fact that I offroad alot good luck with your choice Peace Out.....
I have not installed them yet, but I just bought a set of 17s, replacing my 18s. I just like the big tire look better.
ImissMy92Pathfinder 03-03-2006, 08:21 AM There is no such thing as too much rubber! Go with 17's!
DEMOND 03-03-2006, 09:21 AM I also went with 17's
Denny 03-03-2006, 06:40 PM 17's
BigC1086 03-03-2006, 11:30 PM If you're going with 35's definately stick w/ a 17" rim. It puts less stress on the inside of the wheel. If you're going bigger than a 35" tire, then I would consider 18's only to even things out. But you have to remember that most 1/2 ton rims aren't designed to handle tires bigger than a 35-37 and are likely to split between the tire and the lugs.
A 15" rim is ideal for serious offroading, but that is not an option w/ our bigass brakes.
NKTITAN711 03-04-2006, 10:34 AM I'm so glad you posted this b/c I was about to start a similar thread. (sorry for thread jacking) I have the 17" wheels on my SE, and am looking for lifts right now. After the lift, will probably come 35's. I don't want a lot of backspacing, so I could A: stick with the 17's I have B: purchase some used Nissan 18" wheels C: buy a brand new set of 17" or 18" aftermarket wheels. I TOO am confused and don't know what to do. I have looked and it seems that there are a bit more options for the 17's, but 18 looks nice too b/c originally I wanted 20's...but TOO MUCH MONEY!!! Any ideas would also be appreciated. And again, sorry to thread jack...I just thought our problems were similar.
kevdizzle 03-05-2006, 02:54 AM Well money is not an issue, I just want to make the right decision the first time around and not regret getting either rim in 6 months.
I read somewhere on Titantalk that someone installed 18in wheels to allow for bigger brakes or something, has anyone ever heard of anything like that?

Yeah, I remember someone having to go to 18s because of some aftermarket brake system he wanted, Brumboes maybe???
NKTITAN711 03-05-2006, 08:27 AM Ok ladies...I think this is enough.
I just read this post and I think there's some misunderstanding on both parts.
I understand after reading now that there are aftermarket companies that offer breaking accessories to upgrade the Titan systems. The newer systems have larger rotors, pads, and calipers.
The question here is do you have to get larger wheels to make this newer BIGGER parts fit, or will they fit fine with the 17's? I'm not curious, b/c I don't care. I'm not in the market for different brakes.
The ONLY reason I'm reading this is b/c I TOO am deciding between 17's, 18's and 20's.
Assuming that you have a 33" or 35" tire... Is there any benefit to having one size wheel (17, 18, 20) to another?????? The only answer that has been given is b/c perhaps it facilitates bigger brakes. Anyone ELSE have an opinion or answer on what will work here???
Your absolutly right, I will go back and delete the off topic banter we did there. The 17s allow for larger sidewall tires. Better for off roading, and I personally like the look. Unless you are looking into some of the High performance braking systems, the 17s will not be a problem.
NKTITAN711 03-05-2006, 08:39 AM It DOES look mean with a big meaty tire on a 17". I would just go with that size but it seems like a TON of manufacturs are showing lifted trucks with 20's. Most trucks I see (SEMA, or in magazines) have some BIG lift, with big shiny wheels. I wonder if your off roading suffers b/c of having less side wall. Does this hurt you when you air down? Is your ride not as smooth b/c you have a larger wheel taking all the blows? I think that may be the case...
New question now. I'm going to forget about the 20's.
Are there MORE options now for 17s instead of 18s? Other than an INCH BIGGER, or an INCH SMALLER, is there an upside with going to the 18"? I have the 17, but those LE wheels ARE nice! I don't know personally, and I know I could sit here and ponder all day. So someone help me ponder now.........
NKTITAN711 03-05-2006, 08:40 AM And did I read correctly Bixll....do you have OEM wheels? If so, what's the link to some pictures?
I believe you will find you have a much better selection, or choices to pick from in the 17s.

I am currently running the stock SE 18s. I am waiting for weather to break to put the Procomp Extemes, 17" with 35" BFGS on that I bought from Tyltan.

NKTITAN711 03-05-2006, 11:02 AM Ooooh, very nice! I missed that thread when it came out. It's wierd, but those are the TWO aftermarket wheels that I've actually decided on. My favorites were the ProComp 6079s and the Moto Metals that he has now. Its cool that he's owned both! It's about that time. Now PUT those bad boys on so I can hear how 35 BFGs work on an aftermarket wheels WITH the PRG!!!

In my research, I am going to have to do the pinch weld cut/mod, and most likely loose my front flaps. I will be doing pics and a review of the process very shortly here.
NKTITAN711 03-05-2006, 11:46 AM I didn't even think that you could have mudflaps AND fender flares together. My plan would be to get the BW's if/when a 35" tire goes up there. I'm searching for the 35" tire...Is it the 315/70? Some that have '35' stamped on it are for different wheels sizes other than a 17 or 18. ie. my 285/70 are 33's.
NKTITAN711 03-05-2006, 12:43 PM I found a Tire Calculator and it's showing the 315/70 to be a little over 34" tall. According to the BFG site, the biggest tire in 17" (other than a 37"), is a 315/70/17.

OMG!!!!! I am sooo sorry!!!! I just went and looked at them, and they are 315x70x17!!!! I can't believe I put that out, I was going on memory!!!!
Go ahead everyone, I left the door open, have your fun!
NKTITAN711 03-05-2006, 01:11 PM hahahahaha... I'll leave you alone b/c I KNOW that everyone else will jump all over you being senile or something like that.
I wasn't trying to prove you wrong...just sharing my findings. We are apparently the only 2 people reading CT today!
If that's the case...then GO OUTSIDE AND PUT YOUR TIRES ON!!!
chasenme 03-13-2006, 05:27 AM Hey nate the trucks you see at sema are trailer queens they done take them offroad so they go with the bigger wheels they are for show not go and yes when you air down having a bigger wheel will hurt you depending on the tire size you go with. Peace Out...
NKTITAN711 03-13-2006, 08:58 PM You're right. I should take it from the man with the plan....YOU!!! I idolize your ride...
:notworthy:
dunedevil 03-29-2006, 10:41 PM Well, i dont post much but ima throw in my 2 cents. I would definitely go with the 17's. There are more tire choices, its cheaper, and more rubber. Im a sand guy and let me tell you. Airing down your tires is night and day difference as far as traction goes. The more rubber you got the more air you can let out therefore more bite. Its funny seeing those truvks out at the dunes with their big 20's getting stuck. Sure they look nice but its not for off road. Unless of course you have an insane lift that allows for much bigger tires.
variable159 03-30-2006, 01:23 AM I just put Goodyearr MTR's on my stock 17's and it looks awesome. I have the 2"/1" lift. I got 305/70 17's
