My son is trying to pull his trans axle out of a 95 Chrysler Cirrus. I am trying to help him over the phone. (he lives 3 hours away) I have him to the point of having it loose from the wheel end, ready to pull out of the tranny. All the ones I have done simply pull out like a drive shaft from a tranny, he says it will not come out! Is there anything special with this Chrysler he needs to do to get the axle out of the tranny?

If my memory serves me correctly some dodge/chrysler front drive CV shafts bolted on at the tranny end. I don't recall the years or models. I'll try to look at my books when I get home if you haven't had a good answer by then.

I have never worked on a Chrysler but I have run into two different situations before with half shafts. The first was an internal lock (kind of like a socket and ratchet with the ball in it) That one just required much more force to remove it. The second was an actual collar that went over the hub and was held in by a couple small screws. It could be easy to miss as it looks it doesn't actually come off. That one was an oddball for sure, I doubt that's what he has. I would say it just needs a tougher yank but make sure he doesn't seperate the CV joint itself. Not sure if that helps or not but it's a couple more things to look for. :)

He had his feet up against the car, and was tugging and yanking when I was on the phone. He says it just dosen't seem to want to move???? I hate giving advice over the phone, it is MUCH easier in person! I bet I would be able to get it out if I was there!

Yeah, I know what your saying. It's always easier to do it yourself. :)
But that being said, defenitly see if they need to be unbolted. That's what it's starting to sound like.

Bill, it has an internal expanding snap ring that's keeping it in. He can tug and yank all day and it's not going to budge. He needs to put a prybar between the CV joint and the tranny and just give it a shove. A slide hammer is what's typically used but I'm assuming he doesn't have one available. I've even done it with a long 2x4 before if he has one of those available and enough room to get it in there. Actually the 2x4 is preferable over a prybar because it won't hurt the tranny case. Hope this helps..

Thats what I told him initially, he said there is no room to get in there and pry. I just called him again, and he was trying to get in there from wheel well rather then from underside. He is in process of jacking it up higher to get to it from underneath now. He will let me know if succesful when done. I will keep informed.
