: Front Fender pinch weld mod

03-18-2006, 10:39 PM
For those interested in going with the larger tires (33/35") with just the PRG leveling kit, I have done a mod to the front inner fenders and splash guards that will eliminate the rubbing you get in certain turns and bumps, and allows you to retain you factory splash guards.

First remove your splash guards and set them aside for now. Then remove the plugs in the front half of your inner fender well. This will allow you to pull it back far enough to get to the fender where you need to. Hook it over the upper control arm to keep it out of your way. Here is what you will see once the inner fender is pulled away.
http://www.clubtitan.org/forums/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=2527

Next you need to make cuts apporx. 1 1/2" apart along the pinch weld from the outer edge to where the flange ends. I used a air grinder with a cut off wheel, but I guess you could use a saws-all with a hacksaw blade, I don't think a dermal would be powerful enough, this is not thin metal we are cutting here. Then you also want to make cuts along the bottom edge of the fender along the flat area only, don't cut into where the fender starts curving, or you will be able to see it once done. Once the cuts are made, get a small sledge hammer and bend the tabs you have made flat, knocking them in towards the engine compartment.
http://www.clubtitan.org/forums/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=2528
http://www.clubtitan.org/forums/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=2530
http://www.clubtitan.org/forums/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=2531
After your cuts are made, and tabs bent, you are going to want to spray them with some rubberized undercoating to prevent any rusting.
http://www.clubtitan.org/forums/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=2532

Now you will put the inner fender back in place, including the bottom screw that holds the splash guard on. (underside) You will see where the inner fender has a out-dent to allow room for the pinch weld we just cut back. Heat that are up with a heat gun, get it good and hot, as it is rather thick plastic. I used a piece of 2x4 about 9" long to put up against the heated are, and wedge another piece of 2x4 in against it pushing the out-dent flat. Leave it in this position until plastic cools. Pull wood away and check to see it has molded itself tight to the cuts you have made, if not, reheat and mold it again. Here is unposed shot that wife got of me wedging the 2x4 in to mold fender well.
http://www.clubtitan.org/forums/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=2534

OK, now the splash guard. Mine is going to look a little different then your will, as I have all ready modded it to fit along with my Bushwacker Fender Flares. You will need to get a drill bit type cutting tool for your dermal. The kind you would use to cut dry wall. You simply go right along the lines cutting the entire back out of the splash guard, except for the outer most edge, and the very top where the mounting screw gos in. That way, it will look stock except if you stick your head in and look directly from behind.

I hope this is clear enough for you. If it is not, feel free to pm me with any questions.

Why???? It really aint that bad. You get to spend some "quality" time with your Titan!!!From start to finish, including getting tools out and cleaning up at the end, I believe I had about 4 1/2 hours involved. Figure I had to stop and take pics and stuff too, so you could probobly do it in like 4 hours???

There are just some things I'm not willing to attempt. Cutting sheet metal on my Titan is one of them. I'll attempt the splash guard mod you did, but I'm not one to attempt that much metal cutting. More power to you for doing it, my friend, but that's over my head.

I am in the garage polishing/sealing them today, I have 1 left to do. Then I have to get the preasure sensors put in, and they go on!!!!!

Doesn't removing that weld loosen things up? Seems like you might get some rattles from that. Has anyone done this then re-welded afterward? Or could you just make the "tab" cuts through the pinch weld (instead of cutting the weld off), leaving the parts still welded together?

I haven't taken my fender liner off to see what it all looks like in person, so I'm only going by your pics.

Bri, I had the 35s on mine when you saw it. I did this last year only didn't cut any. I can see that with the cuts you might get a little more room but I just bent it back. I took the fender liner off instead of only half. It was very easy to work with once it was all the way out. If you like, I'll give you a hand if you ever want to do it.

I've had mine bent back for a year now. No problems. In bills pics he is cutting the tabs and bending them back. This is not cutting the weld off at all. Just through it and bending it all back. I would suggest to bend them toward the center of the truck (inward). It gives you plenty of room.

Thats exactly what I did. Your not cutting weld off at all, and yes bend the tabs inward towards motor. The reason for cutting the tabs is that the metal is so thick, you will never get it bent near as far as I did without notching them. No structural weakening with this mod.

You must of had a giant hammer and beat the daylights out of it!!!!! Even with cutting the tabs, it did not want to bend over without quite a bit of persuaision!!!

I actually used one of the 6 foot long wrecking bars that have a flat head on one side and a point on the other. It's pretty heavy and bent it back fairly easy. I used the tire as a guide to keep it straight. It took some power behind it as I'm sure you know but it was easer to get leverage with it than trying to swing a hammer inside the wheel well.

I may end up going in Sep. They will have a couple of months left at sea unless they send me to be legal O then back to school and maybe catch them when they get back. I wont know till the orders are in hand.

nope, I turned the wheel and put the bar on the edge of it as a guide. It was pretty effective. with the fender cover off there was plenty of room and it was easer to heat up the plastic to get it straight.

Yes, I ned your cell number (lol). JK .. No man, I thought my Fox Coils/Deavers/ and bilsteins would resolve this. This is all on top of a 7" CST lift. I am now pushing 10" of lift and the TC's may provide another 1" or so . I'm about ready to just sell it ! Yea right (lol).

You know what ... I stand corrected ... it is the Billet Spacer that Greg sent WITH my TC's thats gonna give me the extra inch.

Sorry, I forgot about the billet spacer. Whats funny though is Greg indicated that i would get an 1" -1.5" more with these 2 items and those spacers don't look even an inch thick .... but they could very well be ???

spody
10-09-2006, 03:51 PM
Leverage . The leveling kit spacer is only 2" thick , but you get around 3"-3.5" (I think) of lift .

Transformer

I think my spacer is different in nature. It can't be more than an 1" thick max.... and will go on the top of my Fox Coilovers. before ordering the TC's i told Greg i had my Foxes about maxed out with close to 3" of thread showing. Any additioanl adjusting of it higher would make me suffer in the ride.

He simply said that the TC's and the billet will give me another 1" - 1.5" but this is to level my rake. The Deavers brought my *** end WAAAAAAAAY up.

I still think my Deavers are a bigger version than what I ordered. I have a TON of wheel well showin (lol) and orderd the smallest version of the Deaver Springs.

I had to cut alot of the fender itself. If it wasnt for my fender flares you would really see were I cut it. I do need to bend the pinch weld back though because Im still rubbing. I guess thats what I get with alot of negative offset and 35 12.50 toyo m/T on 20x10 with a 6.5" lift. I have a body lift on the way.
