: Cleaning under the hood...?

OK....get ready for a stupid question:

What's the best way to clean off all the dust/dirt/etc. that's all over my engine and all the other doodads under the hood? All I can think of is a pressure washer but it seems weird to me to spray water all over the engine..... :?

no question is a dumb question. I use soap and a hose...haven't hurt anything yet.

After a little research, I found stuff like Foamy Engine Brite...anyone used stuff like this? Results?

soapy water and a rag is good for detailing it.
I use a pressure washer on it all the time if it gets really dirty. One thing I do to make it easier to clean next time is spray it with a tire foam shine.
The oil kinda keeps the dirt from getting stuck on there.
That way all you have to do the next time is just spray it off.

Only thing you really need to watch is if you have a intake, make sure it's wrap up, I use a trash bag to cover the AEM.

With the stock intake you dont have to worry about it.

There was a long thread some time back that the infamous Jet Tech (man I miss him) started about this. He used dilluted Simple Green and a hose. I'll be doing it before the Jersey Meet.

I use Simply Green (diluted with water of course). Put it in a trigger spray bottle and spray the entire engine compartment. I then wait about 15-20 minutes before I take the hose and rinse it off. I put seran wrap on the battery terminals but everything else, I just hose off. It does a great job.

Bixll will be proud of me on this one since I pormised that I would start keeping my truck clean. Two weeks ago I cleaned my engine compartment. I used a pressure washer with the lowest pressure nozzle and got it in all of the little nook and crannies. I turned the engine on and let it run the whole time I was doing it.

Does it work on 2 year olds? LOL My youngest is an absolute pigpen. My wife keeps our house absolutely sparkling, but he can find dirt anywhere.

All I've used so far is a damp wash rag and McGuires quick detailer sprayed on the rag. I wipe wherever I can reach. I haven't done any significant off-roading as of yet, so my engine compartment hasn't gotten that dirty, but I've used simple green on a lot of other stuff before, so I will take that advice into consideration. I have a pressure washer, but I'm reluctant to use it under the hood. A regular garden hose would not be out of the question though.

As far as jet tech, I think he had some tough personal issues or something a while back, according to some other members who know him. We all would love to see him chime in soon. He has been a great contributor to this site. I hope things are OK in his life and God speed, he returns soon.

It's not just Navy issue, Goval. I can buy it anywhere.

As far as use on kids, I have found that a suicide nozzle on the garden hose works well.

I spray it down with degreaser, I use purple power from Wally World. Spray it off with preasure washer. Once dry, I spray it down with 303.

I use Preston Degreaser on about everything except on the paint works great especially on the engine. Just dont inhale while spraying it. It comes in the big purple bottle.

Hi Puv,

I'm here, just not that much these days. Thanks for thinking about me though, I'm trying to do better.

Hey there old buddy, just thought I'd pass along one word of caution concerning the purple power, it's incredibly strong and will eat aluminum in no time flat. Please don't ask how I know.... 8O Well ok, I'll tell ya... Several years ago I sprayed it on a lawn mower engine and let it sit for what only could have been 10 minutes at the most. Well in that short time it ate through the protective coating on the aluminum head and started to make small pits in it. So please be very cautious when using that stuff and be sure to 100% rinse it all off.

I'm still a huge fan of the simple green because, not only is it environmentally safe, it won't harm any of the different alloys used on the engine. Just thought I'd pass this little oooops of mine along because I'd hate to hear that your engine block developed a leak from a small pithole in it, possibly caused by the chemicals used in purple power......

Who LOVES YA MAN!!!!

me of course... :D

Thanks for the heads up JT!!! I have been using the stuff for quite awhile, and know it is very strong. Have not had any problems so far, but you can not allow it to dry, and as you said, must make sure you rinse it all off.

I know, I used it on my engine when I can, but most of the time I just spray soap and water, with a rag. But with simple green, you don't even need a rag, it dissolves grease in a heartbeat.
