I put one of fender flares on to try to get an idea of what they would look like if I don't paint em. What do yal think?? Leave em black or paint em white????

I say leave em black! You'll spend a pretty penny getting them painted and the first scratch you get will ruin the feel. I'm also not convinced you can add enough flex agent to the paint to be successful long term. My Vote: Black. - - BTW, do they still run the Midnight Drags there at the Tulsa Dragway? I had some good times at that strip back in the mid-nineties . . .

I'm not sure if I like it black, Thats the reason I haven't put them on my truck yet. I think I would like them white. How about a picture at a longer distance so we can see the bigger picture. Understanding the back isn't on, but a wider view may help. I do have to agree that once they are painted any ding will show up and I'm not sure what the cost is to have them painted.

Hopefully we will get to a point where someone will have them made in the color we want. I like them painted personally but that's just my preference. Also....since I don't have a lock box...bushwacker don't make them for my truck yet. Also have to watch one thing......05 badging is different then 04 so it wouldn't need to be cut out for the V8 Endurance badge.

I want some bad...but they have to be Radiant Silver or I wouldn't like them. And I have no clue what they would charge me to paint them.

I say definetly leave 'em black. The biggest problem with painting them will be that you'll still have a black line from the rubber strip. I originally thought I wanted to paint mine too, but when I put one against the truck the contrast was far better than painting them to match. At least that's my opinion. :) And I think the black and white contrast looks awesome! I've always loved white cars with dark tinted windows and white wheels. But either way, now you need a leveling kit to finish it off. :)

I LOVE them black on the white! I had a white truck with black flares, always looked good!

Paint it white so it compliments the molding strip on the door. I've seen these painted the body color of the Titan and they look good.

I think they look great black. It give the illusion of a larger wheel well and makes the whole thing look more aggressive. Painted looks great but is more of a polished look.

Leave them black!

They look fine against the white paint.

Let's see....
8 blacks
2 whites
2 not sure
I still can't make up my mind. I haven't checked around to see how much it'll be to paint yet. I'd thought about doin it myself, but BiXLL and JT don't think that's a very good idea.
ensclark..took it off right after I took the pics yesterday.
quikwhip...I'd like to lower it a little, not much, and level it. But I haven't had my boat on it yet, so I need to see what it does. I'm guessing it won't bring the back doow much if any.
Thanks for the inputs!!

Just put them on my truck (Radiant Silver) and had them painted FWIW. I think you gotta paint them.

Holy crap! That makes it look like a Tundra. :) They do look great though. How did you overcome the black rubber strip?? Oh, and by the way, welcome to the forum. :D

The black rubber strip is there.

Bought the Extend-a-Fender and had them painted to match the body.

No trimming was needed (have the bedside toolbox).

Somewhat time-consuming to apply the rubber strip.

Had to remove the passenger fender mount bolt (lower front side of rear wheel well) to insert the clip behind the fender lip - poor placement on Bushwacker's part).

If I were to do it again I would remove the fender mount bolts and drill a corresponding hole in the flare then re-insert the bolt over the flare so there isn't a "lump" behind the flare where the head of the bolt sits. It wouldn't have been that much extra work.

Other than that they look great and didn't even have to remove the wheels (you will need an offset Phillips screwdriver).

Definitely recommend them.

Do they make them so you don't have to debadge your 04? Don't look like it would bother me bacause my 05 doesn't have the V8 Endurance badge.

Also what did it cost to have the flares painted?

StompS
02-16-2005, 04:28 PM
I debadged everything except the Nissan on the back tailgate (there are mounting holes). I prefer that look. I believe the '05's don't need debadging. I'm gonna get that Nissan off the tailgate, any ideas? I never thought I'd ever drive a Freakin' Datsun.....but I like the damn truck.

After seeing that, I have to say painted looks better on the lighter trucks.

The painted look reminds me of a Toyota!

ensclark
02-16-2005, 09:44 PM
but the black on white reminds me of a chevy. Thats what a buddy of mine has. 2500 chevy, white with the black FF. I know it's a pure taste thing, Hard to say unless we can get the white and the black on a white titan and see. I'm still torn between the two but like the painted a little better.

02-16-2005, 09:48 PM
I had the black on white on my Frontier, it looks much more "truck like" then painted IMHO.

noticed someone wanted the flares but didnt have the lock box. i was on ebay and was looking at the ats flares, you can get them without the cutout. i went with the bushwhackers because i didnt know if i liked the ats but as i look at them again i think they are pretty cool. stillen is also coming out with a set pretty soon.

Yeh i saw those I really cant say I like them at all. Just something wrong with them. Not sure exactly what it is but I'd stay stock before putting them on. Thanks though I guess I will have to go to Bushwacker and hold a gun to someones head. I mean how hard could it be. I would think it would be easier because they wouldnt have to cut them.

Just checked out a couple of places to get em painted......250.00 was one and 80.00 was another. :? Why the big difference??? Is there something I need to look for or make sure they do??

I am not sure. I can't believe your gonna screw those flares up and get them painted!

Make sure they clearcoat after paint. I think they used flex additive on mine. Since the edges don't need to be painted (one's inside the wheel well and the other has the rubber trim) it should take special racks or two steps to get the paint on. My guy charged me $200 and they painted the edges (two steps for color and two steps for clear) but they weren't aware that the edges didn't need paint. FWIW

Yeah, that $80 sounds way too cheap to me. Ask them what you are getting for that price. If it's a quality job, color matched, properly prepped, with flex additive and clear coat then by all means go for the cheaper one. :) But I still say leave em black. 8)

Hey StompS.....can you take a closer pic that shows the rubber trim? Thanks

StompS

I'll try to get a pic later today. The trick (IMHO) to installing the rubber trim was to pull the red plastic coating off just ahead of where you are pressing (about 1/2") the trim onto the flare. If you go too far ahead then sometimes the adhesive seals the trim to itself. I slide my thumb right on the edge of the trim at a 90 degree angle and pressed straight onto the edge of the trim as I was pulling the red coating off of the adhesive with the other hand.

Ok, I have to say I think it would look good with the new wheels pushing them out with the FF. I like the black but, I think it would look better painted. It would have to be one of those things that would have to grow on me leaving them black. It does look good.

I say leave them on like this for a while, You can always paint them later if you think it would be better.

Oh, and from a womans view, My wife likes the idea of them painted. She dosn't like the way it dosn't flow with the truck. The way they stick out with nothing that ties them in with the rest of the truck. The rest of the accents on the side and front are white.

I guess I know I will get them painted now.

I like'em painted to match. It just looks out of place to me black on white. I wish they would come color coded.....and for the non-lock box. I really wouldn't mind having some but I can live. Especially since I have plans on trying to get a 4X4 in the not toooooo far future. But if black is what ya like....that's all that matters.
