: How to remove TOW mirror caps!

Ok...today I spent the day looking for someone that had posted on removing the big tow mirror back cap. There was enough information on the regular mirror...but the Big tow mirrors were not the same! I decided to post this in case anyone should need it for refrence.

...with a lot of pain and frustration I got these covers off without tearing apart the truck!

There are two clips on each side of the mirror. Here's a link to my photo bucket with pictures (taken in the dark).

After I figured out where the clips are...it wasn't really that hard. You just had to figure out which way they unclipped... the pictures should help.

If you look at the backside picture...you will see where the clips are place in relationship with the mirror. I took some pics from the front so you could get and ideas of where to place your screw driver and the best angle to get to them.

Start with the bottom clips first. It seems that that takes the pressure off the top ones which were harder to get to. Here's the trick...if you look at the caps picture (the one showing the inside of the clip) you will see which way the tabs need to be pushed. The inside tabs (closet to the truck) get pushed up, the out side tabs get pushed away from the truck!!! Good to know trust me as you cant actually see what you are doing! Get your flat head screw driver in place as shown in the pictures for each clip. The tabs closest to the truck are further back behind the mirror. The outside ones are closer to the front of the mirror assembly. This is also good to know as you most likely will over miss the tab if you reach too far back! I hope this helps you!

Great job, CDET!!

I moved this to the Do It Yourself section. I take that back...I can't move it 8O

I'll "sticky" it until one of us CAN move it.

Just did this mod las weekend myself. I had black backs and ordered chrome ones for the LE from the dealer. I had the advantage of having the replacement ones when I took on the project so all I had to do was look at the inside of them to identify the tabs, then just shine a flashlight in behind the mirror to see an pop the tabs. Took about 10 minutes to switch them out to chrome. This is the answer for the Tow mirrors since us '06 SE guys don't get the chrome ones from the factory and they don't make chrome covers that just snap ontop like the baby mirrors. The chrome caps are about $90 from the dealer and I already sold my black backs for $50, so they only cost me about $40 over all.

Step 1: Find nice baseball bat with proper weight and length.

Step 2: Stretch out for a bit to make sure you don't hurt your back.

Step 3: Take a couple practice swings.

Step 4: Swing for the homerun Title like Barry Bonds on STEROIDS!!

be very careful doing this. the tabs have a strength of eggshells.

I couldn't agree more! Be very very gentle when doing this replacement!

I did this myself and I am keeping the both sets handy for future use. I'm probobly going to put the black ones back on this fall to go back to a sort of "blacked out" look.

Do you have the part number they sold you? I have been searching for this number, and No system seems to have a listing, and you are saying you bought them from the dealer, well that must one dang good dealer, cause I am pretty good, and I can not find the number on them...

I have to keep you guys in check! LOL

I got mine from a local Webasto dealer. I made a cash deal w/ some good timing and paid $1250 but I'm sure most will have to be $1800 or so. Just depends.

Ohh I know, I try to keep track of all my Retrax sales, I am the second largest retailer on the east coast for Retrax, I sell a lot of them, and I think they are my best product, but you guys talk them up all the time, and that makes the sale that much easier.

You might try this link for chrome mirror covers. Look underTitan OEM parts.

I ordered a set from the local dealer Monday and picked them up last night. I installed them in about 45 mins, being extremely careful, and they look great. I also love that they're "factory" and held in with clips, not some sticky tape which never seems to hold in the Florida heat & humidity.

ChicksDigEmToo,

Thanks for the great photos and install advice. Really the only trouble spot is the clip on the top outside of the mirror. It's kind of recessed back in a hole.

You're welcome. Keep in mind that the Chrome tabs more are prone to breakage so be very careful! Also....I was told that this is actually easier to do in the dark with a flashlight! I tested this theory out and it is true! You can see the tabs 100% better without the sun glare!

I'm sure Brian from jersey parts can get the chrome caps too...ask and you shall receive!
