After reading about problems with the rear diffs, I'm fixen to drop some Royal Purple 75w/140 in. The other day when I was puting on my leaf spring helpers, I noticed that the diff cover was totaly rusted. I checked the fluid level at 10,000 mi and it was fine and color was normal (according to Nissan a little darker than retail fluid). Im sitting at 15 grand now. I know I know I should have changed it earlier. Anyways, what kind of sealant to you guys recomend for the cover? Any particular brand name? Im used to using the "Army Brand" for our HMMWVs. Blah! Any help would be great.

Are you going to remove the cover to repaint it?? I'm asking because you don't need to remove the cover to change the diff. fluid. If you are going to remove it though black permatex silicone is all I ever use. You can get it in a handy (like a cheese whiz squirt container) that works great.

I mainly use the RTV (I think those are the letters) high heat silicone on any auto sealing.

LOL. Guess I should have clarifed. Yea Im going to take it off tommorow , strip the rust off and put some flat black heat resistant paint on. I want to see if heat is a problem with some Royal Purple 75w/140 and figured black looks better than rust! At-least until I get a finned cover now that I know there available. (My wife is rolling here eyes lol)

The drying process takes at least an hour (preferrably 2) before you add the new gear oil. I can't tell you how many of these I've done over the years and unfortunately I've had some leak. The key to ensuring a leak free seal is to get 100% of the old gear oil off both surfaces. I use brake cleaner or electomotive and many shop towels to make sure both surfaces are oil free. Be sure to spray in the bolt holes of the diff. to clean them out too. Then I put a thin bead of the permatex on the cover and let it sit for about 5 minutes before you install it. You should be set for a perfect seal after that......

This process takes a little time but there's nothing more aggravating then doing this job, and then a few days later see a little bit of gear oil leaking from one of the lower bolts...
