Yeah, my AEM intake has arrived! I'll install it later this evening and let everyone know about it. Can't wait!!

Here is a shot of the components out of the box. Man, the filter is huge! Makes the tubing look tiny and it's a 4 inch pipe! The heatshield is the black thing.

Correction...it's a 3 inch pipe! Both Mossy and Hopupracing are local to me, but I got mine from GregV at Mossy Performance because I also picked up some carbotech pads and the intake was in stock.

OK....just finished up! Took about 45 min.. What adds to the time is dropping the fender liner and mounting the bottom of the heatshield. Otherwise it's a pretty fast and easy setup. She now has major suction like someone I used to know :o

Here's a few pics. The finished ones didn't come out too nice because it was getting dark out. I'll take more tomorrow. Enjoy!!

Pretty Clean looking install!

Let us know how it performs and if you get any SES lights.

Didn't get a chance to really test it yet. Just drove it around my block. So far no service engine lights. I wish I had put this on when I did my exhaust because it's really hard to notice 5-10 hp increases.

Can I ask why you decided to go with this intake v's the myriad of others out there? I plan to add and intake in a few months and I was just wondering . . .

Very nice - looks sharp! Let us know about any difference in engine/exhaust sound along with your perceptions about performance gains. It will be a while before I add an intake, but AEM and Volant will likely be my top choices when I do.

I'm pretty familliar with AEM. They're actually more popular than the rest of the other intakes (besides k&n). But the main reason I went with this one is because of the beautiful polished aluminum tube. Performance wise, they all should be the same.

I was idling in my driveway and blipping the throttle...the exhaust seems to have gotten deeper and with more authority than before.

I was going to say . . . The polished aluminum tube definately gets marks in my book. Really sets off the engine compartment. I'll be looking forward to your review.

Alum or Metal tubes allow heat to transfer more to the intake air than plastic does. The volant is still the best intake for cooler / better air.

What about K&N? Doesn't their CAI use a plastic tube???

02-25-2005, 10:23 AM
A big advantage of the Volant is that it is completely sealed to the engine compartment. All the air is pulled from the fenderwell (or from the front if you have the ram tube).

Air is not stagnant in the intake tube to where it gets heated. The engine is always pulling air in.

The intake tube temperature can drastically effect the temp on the intake air. Many many tests have been done on the G35s with temp gauges on the ECU. Some put wrap around the tubes and saw a 40 degree drop. The difference between metal and plastic is drastic.

With the velocity at which air is sucked through an engine at full throttle, it's highly unlikely it will get heated in a 2 ft. length of tubing. Besides, that polished aluminum tube looks a whole lot prettier than a wrapped tube :D

Okay, just like how your heater works. Air that passes over it at a high rate of speed from the blower fan is heated and blown into the cabin. So it's the same affect. And yes it does make a difference or manufactures wouldn't be making the intake runners plastic now would they?

I personally rather have performance over pretty. I mean how often do you plan to have your hood open to show off?

Rossi

Is this a complete aluminum tube or does it have inner insalation?

And some people do like the look over performance. I do like the way it looks but agree that the air would be heated a bit after the tube pulled heat from the motor.

Again I would be really currious if they lined this tube to insulate it.

That's not the same but, whatever! Do what you want, I did!! I'm just sharing my thoughts and pics of the AEM system. Do you even have an intake system?? As for pretty, that's what floats my boat regardless if it heats my tubes

Hey man I agree...it's your truck...do what you want. Sure you didn't need anyone really trying to rain on your parade.

Looks great man and thanks for the pics. Looks nice under the hood. Again.....is that a complete aluminum tube or is it insulated on the inside?

Also.....plastic is not heat resistant. Not as conductive as metal not doubt but still can conduct heat.

Hey Rossi,
Thanks for the compliments. It is a complete aluminum tube. Not sure if there is a coating on the inside, but will check later.

Looks very nice! I was thinking about getting the AEM Brute Force, but went with the Volant.

I think the Volant would look a whole lot nicer with a shiny tube.

But the only thing that matters is whether you like it.

Nice looking setup. How is the upper hood seal? I had a K&N FIPK on my last truck, and the hood seal on the heat shield did not seal well at all. Just wondering if the AEM is better.

Thanks for the info and pics....glad your happy with it!

The hood seal works pretty good. You can see where the hood pinches down on the rubber. You're probably gonna get the same performance from either though.

Yaaayyyyy, whoopeee!!! Well, I design web sites for a hobby. Must I bow down to you now because you design intakes?? Like I said earlier, pretty floats my boat! Can you comprehend that? I don't really care if I can gain a couple more HP by wrapping my tube. I don't like that look!!!

well anyway  .........is that filter big or what.....is it an oil type like k&n? is the volant a oil type also?

Boys... boys... boys... Are we gonna have to separate you two? It's a very nice intake and I think we can all enjoy the beauty of that shiny metal tube.

I lean toward function over form, but who doesn't like shiny things under the hood?

I hear ya... but you know there is still function with this shiny metal tube :D :D :D

And Smoke, yes it is actually a k&n filter.

LOL . . . You help design intakes for Stillen? LOL . . . Guess they don't share your expertise then, since I discovered I can buy an AEM BruteForce Intake for my Titan from STILLEN. :)

Also, are they using plastic tubing on the myriad of Turbo Kits they offer? :) Sorry, I couldn't resist.

is that why some intakes stillen has their name on are made by AEM? Like their intake for the new se-r.....hmmmm

Do you have trottle body spacer? Cusom intake, my next mod. Seems the open boxes makes difference in spacer whistle. But with this one sealing against hood, I wonder? I'm between AEM and Volant.

I found this post very interesting and was wondering if anyone had run dynos with just a Volant or AEM mod? I really don't think there would be much difference as far as plastic vs metal tubeing for the intake. I just got an AEM and love it.
