: 4x4 won't engage

Hey folks,

Wasn't sure if all the same folks were on all the Titan forums so I thought I would toss my post up here.

When I try to select 4hi the 4wd shift indicator (the little image that shows the 4 wheels and transfer case on the gauge cluster) blinks 3 or 4 times, then completely disappears (the whole image turns blank, even the outlines) and then my 4wd light turns on.

When I flip the switch I can hear the relays (I think they're relays) tick...

If I shut off the Titan and restart it in 2wd mode, the 4wd shift indicator image returns, showing only the rear wheels engaged. If I try to switch it into 4hi again, the whole issue repeats.

I've run through the self-diagnosis for the transfer case in the FSM and it returns with no malfunctions in the error codes.

4hi and 4lo were working fine until a couple weeks ago when it suddenly stopped engaging the 4x4 modes.

Would appreciate any help... trying to avoid the dealership at all costs.

The first place I would look is at the connector at the aft end of the transfer case. Unplug it and look for corrosion or any bent pins. This has been known to cause problems in the past with others and can cause exactly what you're talking about. Please let us know what you find if you decide to check it out.

Thanks for the quick response! I went right out and checked that connector... all the contacts were shiney and brand spankin perfect. Replugged it and went through the diagnosis again (for s*%@s and giggles) and this time it threw a code. 12, to be precise:

12 Actuator position switch
-Improper signal from actuator position switch is input due to open or short circuit.
- Malfunction is detected in the actuator position switch.

The GF is displeased that I am trying to do this on my own  (she is half owner of the Titan) and insists on me taking it in

Why would you avoid the dealership? It's under warranty. It's their problem - not yours.

I'm glad it threw a code. Call the dealer man and let us know what happens.....Good luck..

Thanks guys...

Too many bad experiences with dealerships in the past :)

I have a decent technical reach with mechanics... I've done a few motor swaps, head gasket jobs, trans jobs, diff rebuilds, all that kind of stuff. But the Titan is my first 4x4 and it figures that my first and only problem is 4x4 related :)

Due to my distrust I would do a lot to make sure I'm the only one that wrenches on my Titan.

I'll make sure to update yall after my trip to hell.

Thanks again!
