: Loose Bolts all over on New Titan!!
JetTech 09-27-2004, 03:57 PM Let me start off by saying I LOVE MY TRUCK!! But let me also say that I would like for Nissan to start a more in-depth quality control program to make sure the assembly workers are at least tightening things up on the line.
My truck has just over 600 miles on it, it's never been off-road and I haven't even hit a hard bump with it yet so all the loose bolts I found the other night came from the factory this way, of which I think is unexcuseable on Nissan's part. I've attached several pictures that I took and hope that most of you check yours before rattles start to drive you crazy and for safety sake too.
My advice is to allocate several hours of your time with a bright light, lots of metric sockets/wrenches, a bottle of loc-tite and go hunting...Start under the truck front to back then go inside front to back. Put a socket or wrench on every bolt, nut, and screw you lay eyes on and give it a twist to see if it's loose. By the way, I'm not talking "improperly torqued" here either, I'm talking 1 to 4 turns loose!!! I'm still pretty upset with this issue and may send these photos to Nissan because if they want to improve, here's their chance.
If you have any more to add to this post please do so with either pictures or a good verbal description of what and where you found it so we can all learn.
Thanks,
Dale

BiXLL 09-27-2004, 04:04 PM I just got done finding both my bumper extensions were loose. One side had screw missing, the other side was just loose!
JetTech 09-27-2004, 04:17 PM good one Bill, I forgot about those!! Actually I'm still not done going over my truck. I spent at least 2 hours on it Saturday night and I need to spend probably another couple of hours. I just hope no one encounters any loose driveshaft/half-shaft bolts!! It's a little scary to find this many things loose and not even assembled correctly (wiring harness' not even clipped) because it makes you wonder "what else".
I also found one of the dash bolts, above the cabin air filter box, screwed right into a wiring harness. Luckily it didn't penetrate any of the wires but jeeeez.
BiXLL 09-27-2004, 04:35 PM JT, did you have actual rattles that made you tear into your dash to find these loose bolts? I ask, as I have read about numerous dash rattles, and I have none. I am wondering if I need to get in there and check, or wait untill a rattle develops.
JetTech 09-27-2004, 05:07 PM I've got one rattle on the passenger side under the dash that I'm trying to locate. Other than that I'm rattle free. When I was trying to locate it is when I started noticing loose bolts everywhere.
JetTech 09-27-2004, 05:18 PM ok, maybe I'm a little hardcore but I WILL find this rattle...

LOL I am calling you when I need help with the center console I am going to make and put the LCD in the dash.

k9mrussell 09-27-2004, 05:39 PM I hate to say it, but.... that’s what you get when you build a truck in the US. I don't want anyone to think I'm un-American here because I’m as patriotic as they come. I just know how the American autoworker is. There is no reason why a truck owner with 600 miles has to strip his truck to find a rattle!!!!
Now I know I'm going to get bashed for saying this, but from my past experiences I believe this to be a true statement. Sorry if I offend you, but you'll get over it!!!! LOL

My exact thoughts!!
Too bad because it's an awesome truck. Even though I'm ripping and tearing things apart it's mainly to tighten everything up which is really a shame..
JetTech I guess its safe to say you have a screw loose HEHEH

Don't make me edit your post.... Or hold out on you when you need to take your center console apart...
JetTech 09-27-2004, 08:22 PM and here's some loose bolts on the drivers side with the lower panel removed. I also marked the XM connector and trailer brake harness for those of you interested. Sorry but I think I've severely underestimated the time to tighten everything up. Way more than a couple of hours...

When your done you can come to Greenville and tackle mine. lol
By the way I have waited longer than I wanted to, to do my oil change because I've been waiting for that oil test kit. I am at 4000 miles now I am going to go ahead and get it changed I don't like going over the 3000 mar too much.
M4ck
JetTech 09-27-2004, 08:31 PM I wouldn't worry about the test kit right yet. Just change it and try to do a sample around the 10K mark to see how things are doing.
10-4 didn't mean to jack your thread here. Carry on.
LOL

JetTech 09-27-2004, 08:36 PM aye aye el capatain....
k9mrussell 09-27-2004, 08:39 PM I just got my test kit in the mail today. Boy, that took a long time.
TITENZ 04-29-2005, 01:05 AM Has anyone ever checked the most loose one of all???? "The loose nut" between the steering wheel & the drivers seat!!!!! LOL Just thought i had to throw that in.... hehehe
PeaceKeepr 04-29-2005, 08:17 AM I hate the phrase "tearing into the date".....I'm soo afraid that I will break a clip or something or that it will never fit right again.
scoathy 05-10-2005, 09:45 AM Where can I locate the oil test kits you discuss?
Thanks!

ditch64242 12-24-2005, 01:26 PM holy shat dude thats extreamly unacceptable... i would go to the dealer and tell them to take the thing apart and rebuild it completely NOW! FOR FREE! because thats a bunch of bullshat
asheborotitan 06-29-2006, 10:20 PM I agree with the previous post. If I had found that many loose nuts and bolts, I would be driving it to the dealer and demanding action or a brand new replacement truck. Maybe you should make out an invoice for your time and send it with your pictures to Nissan and see what kind of response you get!!:thumbsdown-big:
suddenurge 06-30-2006, 01:06 AM Mine is an 05-05 build and I couldn't find one loose bolt after checking for about 2 hours and at least 100 bolts underneath.
armena 07-09-2006, 03:04 PM I took apart my center dash, pulled out the radio and all that crap, pulled apart the floor console where the shift is and didint find anything loose, BUT i still have an annoying rattle somewhere that sounds like loose plastic moving around...dunno.

You gotta remember this thread was started a long long long time ago. Back when they were having some issues at the Nissan plant. They have since made some changes and these problems are rare now. This is the kind of thread that scares new members when these old threads are dug up from over a year ago. LOL Let these old posts die!
haha

LDOTITAN 07-09-2006, 04:47 PM I wonder how deep folks are digging to find thes old ones? There is a lot of good information burried deep in there, but some scary ones, too.
blkbelt65 07-09-2006, 09:40 PM I was just going to add that M4ck. Allot of new members don't check dates and start to panic. Maybe that's something else for the New Member section......

Could be your noise is the drivers seat. Others have had the same problem. Noise I had sounded to me to be coming from the dash but after having a Tech ride in the back seat he said it was coming from my seat. They replaced the seat with a '06 seat from another Titan. Passenger seat also squeaks and rattles on some Titans and mine is now making noise. I think you should have a Tech ride with you but pick a bumpy road.
cdtaylor15 07-10-2006, 01:52 AM i had the same noises. I noticed them about 2 months after i bought mine. I took it to the nearest dealer and they said there was a recall on the tortion bars. They did some wierd mod and it worked just fine. They said they drilled a hole and adjusted the mount points. I guess whatever works.
Hermosa 07-25-2006, 04:51 PM Good old American Union labor! You are lucky they even had bolts or nuts!
UAW = crap
Hey Hermosa:
:hmm:BTW, the Nissan plant in Canton, Mississippi is non-union, as are ALL of Nissan's North American facilities. The quality issues have been addressed... I think got a little ahead of themselves in trying to launch 3 vehicles on the same line, at the same time (Titan, Armada and Quest).
blkbelt65 07-25-2006, 05:34 PM guess this thread will never die........
Jaho1979 07-25-2006, 06:38 PM ok, maybe I'm a little hardcore but I WILL find this rattle...

I've got a rattle in my cupholder hinge on the center console. What was your procedure for removing the center console pieced around the shifter, as shown in this picture? Was it very hard? Thanks.
IRISH JOE 10-25-2006, 11:50 PM I guess it's a good idea that we all "Titan" the bolts and make it safe. I found a few loose bolts on my 2004(granted its got 62000+ miles) A little scary but still a great truck!
eishozzzz 12-16-2006, 09:33 AM I gave up on my rattles lol
spody 12-17-2006, 12:34 AM I found a couple that weren't exactly tight but not real loose either . You can't blame non-union workers , everything is assembled by robots now . If anything , blame the programmers . LoL
cool65hntr 01-03-2007, 07:33 PM wow thats shocking that nissan doesnt inspect their work better. I would expect better from the same company that got everything else right on the titan
Nabors 01-15-2007, 09:08 PM I used to work for a supplier of GM building seats and interiors. In our plant the torque wrenches and screw guns were programed to deliver only to a certain torque. But there were times stuff left the plant that wasn't up to code. The supplier I worked for is also the same company that makes these crappy material seats for thr Titan.
vshortt 01-16-2007, 01:55 PM wow thats shocking that nissan doesnt inspect their work better. I would expect better from the same company that got everything else right on the titanEverything's perfect with the exception of some loose bolts? I'll tell ya. I love my Titan but I'm perfectly willing to admit that I can find issues with it other than a loose bolt or two. However, you've scored an "A" in optimism.
Boxerbay 01-16-2007, 02:24 PM Talk about loose nuts... wow nice way to dig up an old thread from 2004!!!
Street5927 01-18-2007, 09:00 PM Here is a new one that I haven't seen posted yet. The other day I was getting gas and noticed that the top of my driver side taillight was slightly canted outward. I opened the tailgate and noticed that the top screw that holds the taillight assembly in place on the driver side was completely out, and the bottom one was half way out. I checked the other side, and those two screws were also loose. I'd hate to loose a whole taillight assembly because of a few loose screws.
wamsuttabill 02-01-2007, 07:49 AM Bolts x Troque. This seems to be a good thread to ask. Does anyone have a manual that tells the correct torque for the rear spring U-bolt nuts? I've installed a Timbren SES and dont know how much torque these nuts require.
njjisu 02-20-2007, 03:38 PM When I bought my '04, the bolts holding the back seat down were only just started. There was a half inch of thread showing on all of them.

In relation to the rattle in the front dash...I had the same thing. It sounded like it was on the passenger side. However, when I had someone riding with me, they thought it was on my side. I finally figured out what was making the noise on mine. It's the two 'dome' lights on the ceiling up front. This is the light where you press on the lens to turn on. Anyway, in my case, the lense would rattle but as soon as I touch it, it stops. I would have sworn it was in the dash but this ended up being it.
PenguinLE 02-20-2007, 04:35 PM The ring trim around the dash tends to vibrate a bit as well. Happens on every Titan I've ever ridden in (except for Nick's, but that's because he is an anal SOB that tore the entire dash apart to re-seal everything correctly).
FISHDUPPIE 02-20-2007, 10:29 PM Went to put my tailgate up today and didn't see that the bolt came out of the strap. Now I gotta get me some new tail lights...... Put a nice nick in one and chipped the paint off the tail gate. Pissed me off!!!!!!!! But I guess I needed a reason to buy some LED tail lights! (checked all the bolts in the tailgate area and only one was tight. I had to tighten the rest of them. How far am I gonna have to go?)
spody 02-20-2007, 11:01 PM Had to tighten my Tailgate bolts too almost every one was loose . That was today .
shinermiller 04-19-2007, 11:08 AM had similar problems on my 06 frontier. lucky my tailgate didnt fall off when i opened it, on of the straps was missing a bolt and the other one was halfway backed out.
wiscdave 04-19-2007, 11:49 AM So much for Nissan quality....only good things about the truck are the motor and tranny. I know that's not a good attitude to have but that's how I feel. When I bought the truck new June 04, i thought ya a Nissan no problems at all...well 52k later and tens of trip to the dealer not sure of the quality for sure. Hate to say it Consumer reports has it right, maybe you don't have all the problems us 04 guys did, but its not a perfect truck and probably nothing is. I've been watching the reports on the problems on the 07s and might get one, maybe a yota..but I would probably get the taco if I could do it again.
A.I.I. 04-28-2007, 02:00 AM You have to remember your always going to have Monday and Friday vehicles(atleast in America).
On Monday everyone at the plant is to hung over or to tired to work.
On Friday everyone is thinking about what they are going to drink after that hard week of work.
If your lucky, you'll get on built on the other 3 days of the week.
I haven't torn everything off the new 07 yet, but I've taken quite a bit apart, and have yet to find 1 loose bolt. So I just might have gotten me a Tuesday built truck.
dbKustoms 07-14-2007, 09:29 AM i had a rattle from the front off my truck for a few weeks but looked and seen nothing. then one day while i was going to work my center chrome bumper piece fell off. it fell off. it was all scrached up, i was so pissed.
SHAKEDOWN 07-14-2007, 11:01 AM You have to be kidding. No way!
Ol'Coot 07-15-2007, 09:47 AM Maybe I got the odd truck, but in over 2 yrs, except for the brake problem that was fixed, I've had 0 problems. Not a squeak, rattle, shimmy, shake or anything. Nothing has fallen off, warped, leaked, or anything. Probably shouldn't have said anything about it........ Reverse luck
:rofl-big:
mrbrock72 07-15-2007, 11:58 AM That is really the only problem I have had with my 06 Titan. At about 2k miles, the rear passenger lower shock bolt was loose and came off. The shock was just hanging there! And it took my dealership 4 days to finally get around to fixing it! I was stuck driving a tiny little nissan versa all week. They get great gas mileage tho!
PhxBlue 07-16-2007, 04:32 AM Had to tighten my Tailgate bolts too almost every one was loose . That was today .
Maybe thats the clunk I hear from the bed on bumps!
stoeh 10-14-2008, 11:07 AM Hello , completely new at this. I purchashed a 2008 Titan 4x4, 200 miles later i began to expericence a loud popping noise in the front end, took it back to the dealer as was informed they could not find any thing wrong and this was after the said they went over every bolt and nut. The dealer then informed me that this was a normal action of the Titans, I then proceeded to test drive other Titans across Texas and New Mexico and found this to be false, back to Nissian still no good went to better business bureau and lost in abrotration. I love my Titan but come on!!!!! The money it would take to use a lawyer i could replace the front end. This is great that i am not the only person that is having these problems and i mean that i thought i was alone with the problems with Nissan.

Can you give more information on when and how it happens? Does it happen during normal driving or when turning, bumpy roads or what? What does it sounds like, other than popping. Did you buy it new?
stoeh 03-13-2009, 06:27 AM Yes i bought brand new, it makes a loud metal to metal clanking. It like driving without shocks or something. It usally occurs driving straight down roads that are pot hole filled or roads that have minor dips or bumps. It can make the same noise driving around corners also. The best way to copy the noise is to drive over a speed bump, yeah I know thats why its called a speed bump, but I have driven many other trucks and none make this noise. It just does not seem right with the technology we have now days.
SHAKEDOWN 03-14-2009, 10:04 AM Sorry. I still cannot think of what could cause the problem you are having. If it were me I would take the truck to another Nissan dealer and have a tech ride along and duplicate the noise. Before you go in though, find a road close to the dealer where the noise can be made to happen and drive over it with the tech listening or driving the truck. Good luck.
