Hey all!
After reading all the scary posts about blown rear diffs, I went ahead and changed out my rear diff fluid to Mobil 1 75W-140 synthetic. Thanks to everyone for the old posts about fluid weights, how to, etc! Changing out the fluid was a snap!
I was surprised how clean the old diff fluid was at 19000 miles. It had the color of used motor oil with very few metallic particles. The magnet on the drain plug had a thin coat of gunk, but not as much as expected. (I changed out the oil on my new lawnmower recently and that first oil came out chrome!). I put the old diff fluid in a clear bottle and will let it settle overnight to see what comes out.
Hopefully my dread of a blown diff towing my trailer in the middle of nowhere with my family will not come true!
Have a great weekend!

I think you did the right thing. You just can't put a price on peace of mind. Especially when it comes to family.

just changed my diff. fluid today. 04 CC. 4x4 with 20,000 miles. it was really dirty and some gunk on the magnet. I don't think it's been changed before. I got truck with 10,000 miles on it. I don't even think it was 75/140. glad I checked it. now I got to do the front. thanks!

you guys have fared better than me.in my 5th diff yes i said 5th i was going thru the bbb lemon law bs and they had an "inspector" come and look at the truck.well i drained 1/2 qt for him to examine.it looked like black metallic paint after only 8000 miles and the plug had a good 3/8" pile of sh*t on it.i put it into a 32 oz gatorade bottle to let it settle out and in 2 days it had all settled to the bottom and it was 1/4" thick on the bottom of the bottle.dealer says nothing wrong with it and changed the fluid.that was 3000mi ago so monday when im in for an oil change im going to have them inspect it again as the humm is getting worse.the service manager told me "off the record" that nissan said unless my truck comes in on a roll back there is nothing wrong with my diff.i guess the bastards dont want to have to buy it back.at this piont with 30k on it it wouldnt make sense for me to have them buy it back since the milage charges woud kill me.

When I purchased my First Titan I was impressed when the salesman told me it had a Dana 44 axle under it. Dana builds axles for large trucks and they hold up good. Recently I was talking to my brother in law, he rebuild transmissions and drive axles for large trucks. He couldn't believe it when I told him the truck came with a dana 44, he said that was way too small for a half ton truck especially pulling 9500lbs. He told me that some golf carts come with a dana 33. The small drive axle could be why we have less drive train lose than a dodge, we are turning less weight. Now I am kind of ashamed to know that my truck has a drive axle just a little larger than a golf cart.

not as sorry as me ill bet.i should have planted it into a tree whn they left the brakelines loose on the second replacement.i would have a fully loaded supercharged one by now and a new 350 to play with and the wife would be driving a new armada along with the deep 6 figure paycheck.but when your wife calls and says honey i had to put your truck on the sidewalk cause the brakes went out it tends to make you a lil mad.ill admit i lost it and called the dealer immediatly to tell them exactly how i felt about the whole thing.i almost attacked the tech that did the work when he had the balls to come up and ask how that diff was holding up.i asked "you the dumbf**k that did the work" he replies "yes and im no dumbf**k" my next words to him were "you had better get out of arms reach or you wont look the same anymore you left my brake lines loose and almost killed my wife" as i went tward him.it took my wife the service manager and 2 service writers to keep me off of him.everyone in the dealership was staring.a few customers left while i was walking arround the showroom telling them all how good the service dept was.
