: Buy a $210 oil change or lose warranty!
AZ_Sailor 08-23-2006, 05:06 PM Hi all,
I just received an "Important Service Notice" from my local Nissan dealer advising me (and I quote - including the all caps):
"IT'S IMPORTANT THAT YOU FOLLOW THE FACTORY GUIDELINES FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND HAVE THIS SERVICE PERFORMED AT AN AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER AT YOUR EARLIEST CONVENIENCE. NOT DOING SO COULD AFFECT YOUR ELIGIBILITY FOR WARRANTY REPAIR AS INDICATED IN YOUR OWNER'S MANUAL."
Can someone confirm that this is BS? They cannot void my warranty because I change my own oil/oil filter/air filter, right? The 15k service is $210 and all they promise to do is inspect/check a bunch of things and do a LOF + AF. I'll pay their blood money if I have to, but I won't be happy about it. Opinions/advice?
Thanks,
AZ
I never got that letter.
I do my own and they fixed my brakes and I had over 15k when I did that.

nascarjody 08-23-2006, 05:54 PM They CAN NOT void your warranty if you do your own oil changes. Just make sure you keep the receipts & a log of when it was done. This is just incase you have a engine failure you can show that you did the scheduled oil changes. Also remember to do the trany services & diff services at recomended times. As you know there are diff problems out there & I would hate to hear that they would not warranty the rear diff at a high mileage because you did not do the scheduled service. Is this letter from your service dept or nissan?
wurk4fordboughttitan 08-23-2006, 06:31 PM It's all scare tactics. We used to send stuff like that out at the Ford Dealer I worked for. Your most important services are every 30,000 miles.
read the magnason moss act of 1975 i believe this is correct spelling may be wrong
LDOTITAN 08-23-2006, 07:05 PM The most important word in that whole statement is "COULD". As wurk4ford said, it's a scare tactic. If you feel strongly about it, go throw it back in your dealer's face. 'Course, it may not be his fault, but as M4ck said, I have not received a letter like that either.

little_golden_titan 08-23-2006, 07:53 PM That's bs! Go get ya some oil and do it yourself
AZ_Sailor 08-23-2006, 07:55 PM It is from the service department at the dealership. I guess I'll ignore it.
Thanks to all for the replies.

Az Titan 08-23-2006, 08:00 PM what dealership?
Im in Az and work for a dealer(not a nissan one)
AZ_Sailor 08-23-2006, 08:21 PM Power Nissan Tempe
wurk4fordboughttitan 08-23-2006, 08:21 PM For $210, they had better be lubing and letting fluid out of more than my truck. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/rpeebles/Smileys/clit.gif
titan-ic 08-23-2006, 10:07 PM I believe the magnuson/moss act deals primarily with aftermarket parts and add ons. This is if memory serves correctly.
titannup 08-24-2006, 06:32 PM That is almost as bad as my dealership telling me that if I don't use "Nissan" oil filters, my warranty is void. Assuming this to be a flat out lie. Thanks for all input.
AZ_Sailor 08-28-2006, 05:48 PM Thanks much to everyone who took the time to respond. Based on your responses, I decided to blow off the dealer's threat and spend some quality time with my Titan. I thought I'd share the end result with the forum.
Here is how it all came out:
Item.............................................. ....$/per...Qty.....Cost
Castrol synthetic 10w30 oil.....................4.99.....7.....34.93
Puro Pure Platinum oil filter......................4.99.....1......4.99
Royal Purple 75w140 gear oil..................11.39.....3.....34.17
K&N drop-in high-flow air filter................36.99.....1.....36.99
Napa FIL4854 in-cabin air filter...............27.49.....1.....27.49
Air intake mod as shown by m4ck..............free
All day Saturday playing w/my truck....priceless
.................................................. .........Subtotal...138.57
.................................................. ...............Tax.....11.22
.................................................. .............Total...149.79
So I saved a little more than 60 bucks, bought better stuff than the dealer would have used and did a couple of extra things that make me feel better and might even extend the life of my truck. I'm a happy camper!
Best wishes all,
AZ

Cool beans. Just for future reference. Castrol Syntec is a good oil. However, there are other oils that are the same price or cheaper that do a better job. Aside from that, everything else looks great. Congrats on not having to take a trip to the stealership.

I am open to suggestion. Which ones are they?
I bought and used the Royal Purple gear oil after reading about it here on CT. However, I'm not willing to spend $10/qt x 7 for an engine oil change. I prefer to change my oil every 3,500 miles or so (even if there's useful life left in the oil) just to get the "dirty stuff" out of the engine more often. I've had good luck w/Castrol but am not married to it. If there's a better/cheaper alternative, I'm all ears.
Thanks,
AZ
wurk4fordboughttitan 08-29-2006, 11:20 AM I have a GIANT oil thread of TITAN proportions in the works. Unless you plan to drive all 3500 miles in the next couple days, I'll have everything outlined here pretty soon. :D
AZ_Sailor 08-29-2006, 11:47 AM ...sounds like a plan to me. I'll await your TITANic Oil thread with breathless anticipation. :-)
Thanks,
