: Differential oil capacity?

Can someone tell me what the oil capacity of the differential is? It's not listed in the manual. I'm about to order some RP synthetic, and don't want to overbuy that expensive stuff.

Rear differential capacity is approximately 2.5 qts. I use Mobil 1 75w-140.

You need to buy 3 quarts. It will take about 2.25 quarts to fill the differential back up. I got my RP 75W140 at Napa for $11.49/qt.

I have one tip for you. The drain-and-refill job is easy, but here's how to make the refill part even easier. After you have removed the top and then the bottom plugs and it's draining away, lower the spare tire to the ground and pull it to the rear. Now clean the lower (magnetic) plug and put it back in. You'll have all the room you need to line up the RP bottle and squeeze in the oil through the pointy tip. Don't bother trying to completly empty the bottle. When you can't easily get any more to pour out, just move on to the next bottle and then the next until oil comes back out the top hole. After you've put the top plug back in, crawl out from under the truck and pour what's left in the first two bottles into the third one.

I found that lowering the spare made the job easier, and gave me a great chance to check the pressure (it needed air) which is something I don't usually think to do very often.

I swapped my spare with a giant doughnut on a quick release mechanism. If I get pulled over, I can throw it off into the distance and get away while they chase it. :D

Back to reality,

Good tip on the spare, not everyone has a little hand pump like me. I guess that would make things way easier doing it the old fashioned way. :D

I use a piece of Tygon tubing about a foot long and stick on the end of the bottle. I don't have to drop the spare. There is plenty of room to tip the bottle upwards.
