: Resonators Removed!!!

I just got back from the shop to have my resonators removed. I had 2 1/2" pipes put in with flanges so I could change them out if necessary. This is a great mod! There is more power up top and hardly any noise increase. The drone did not increase at all. When you start it up it sounds more like the way a flowmaster system should sound. It's throatier and deeper. There is just a very little hint of raspiness at the very upper end of the rpm range when floored. Although I think it had that before I pulled the resonators. If anyone is contemplating doing this, I highly recommend this low buck mod. This is the best bang for the buck, I think.

I'll get some pics posted later this afternoon.

Thanks JetTech, for the advice regarding this!

You should also notice and nice seat of the pants power increase across the entire rpm band. Down low to the rev limiter 8) .......enjoy!!

I wasn't able to test it from a stop because there of the traffic on the streets (it was lunch time), but I was able to floor it merging on the freeway. There was definitely more power. Great mod!

Cal,

They charged me for 1 hour labor @ $60 and $56 for parts. I'm only one hour from you. I have a cousin that lives off Bake Pkwy, I think it's Foothill Ranch so if I head up there we can get together.

ooooo, not a good idea if you haven't read my personal experience with doing this straight pipe mod. I know m95 had the flowmasters installed when he was thinking about doing this, but in case anyone else reads this I just wanted to say please don't do this with the stock system. It sounds really weird and the gains just aren't there.

Like Jet said. I think the gains from the reso removal come with a free flowing system already in place. It's not the individual parts, but the sum that really bring it to life.

Apologies in advance if I'm demonstating my ignorance - were these mods on a 4X4, or a 4X2? I'm a relative newbie at this but I'm working hard on learning as fast as I can, cuz "too much horsepower is never enough"

I just got my Volant Air Box/RamAir and AirRaid spacer, and after reading the posts here I now realize I need to go with an aftermarket exhaust to match my intake improvements. Right now 'm looking at the Flowmaster 70 CatBack, but am open to suggestions (that income tax refund should be in the mailbox any day, and I can feel it burnin' a hole in my pocket already). I'm not opposed to going to a custom pipe-bender if the difference in bux will be worth the difference in $ ... your (or anyone else's) thoughts ???

I'm pretty sure M95 has a 2 wheel drive. He'll jump in and confirm, but I also think he has the FM catback system your thinking of getting. I had my custom system done with 70 series and I like the sound plus a little extra HP. When I put on the Volant CAI, I could tell a big difference in power. I haven't got my TB Spacer yet. And tomorrow, my resonators are coming off. Hope I like it.

TitanGuyCNY,
As Baja stated, I do have a 4x2. The difference I believe is the 4x4 has 4 cats...I had resonators (2 cats). My cat-back system is indeed made by Flowmaster which comes with the 70 series and piping. Now don't confuse this system with a custom one with a Flowmaster muffler. Most custom ones do not offer mandrel bending (no kinks in the bends) which will sap power. Also, a properly designed system will be tuned and tested to create power. I am extremely happy with my exhaust system. You can find the Flo kit at www.summitracing.com and type in "flo-17406" in the search box.

I also have the Flowmaster dual cat back system (see sig). Adding the exhaust will definitely get you closer to enjoying the full potential of any intake or TB mods. I'm the exception. :) Custom with all mandrel bent piping. You know roadster, I think you've sold me on the AEM Intake over the Volant. Once I get it installed and let the computer adjust for a few weeks we will have to meet at the Carlsbad Strip one Saturday and run em. Titan, you'd probably Hauler *** on me...you have less weight. You got a nice one (exhaust) there. I wanted a single out, but Flowmaster only made the duals and I didn't want crush bends.

Mine does pop some at the higher RPM's yes but not bad or obnoxiously. I have nothing to compare it to though since I went from bone stock to full cat-back over night. If Flowmaster had made a single out I would have bought it too. I like dual exhaust but it's just not my taste for the Titan. Yours does look good with the side exits though I have to say.

Carlsbad is closed??? No way! It was just open last season! Are you positive? That really sucks. Well then Fontana it is. :) Palmdale is too high. Something about adjusting my times for altitude makes it seem not real. We could do the 1/8th mile at Irwindale too some night. That would be an awesome get together.

Follow Up: Oh man, I just saw the photos of the demolition of Carlsbad Raceway . . . I'm just sick . . .

Mine seems to do it if I blip the throttle hard while in park, but It just sounds more like a flowmaster exhaust now without the resonators.

Real estate developers are taking over that land. Us SoCal boys should get together some time. I prefer 1/4 mile, but if Fontana is too crowded, then 1/8 mile it is. Or we can race on the 5 near the 405 junction (Irvine) at 2:00 am

I did the resonator delete a while back but I went with 3" Moroso spiral-flow mufflers to take their place. They are guaranteed to reduce the noise by 5-7dB for racing organizations. I dropped 0.15 secs on my quarter mile times with this mod. In conjunction with the Banks exhaust, I dropped 0.25 secs.

I've got a couple of questions for the uninformed.
1) What are resonators? and what is thier purpose?

2) Why do the 2x4 Titan have 2 cats & 2 res, while the 4x4's have 4 cats??? At least that is what I think I gathered from this thread.

I think that is all for now. Any explanations would be appreciated.

thanks,

The resos are for noise reduction. No one seems to know for sure why 4X2 have them and 4X4's have secondary cats instead. I asked the service manager at the dealer and his response...." Huh...I didn't know that!".

I've asked around a bit, and I've come to this conclusion/speculation: The 4X4 will be working harder than a 4X2, esp when in 4wd mode, so in theory, it should be emitting more pollutants, thus needing the extra cats to bring it into compliance. I believe also that by installing the 2nd cats, they will act as a reso since they are restricting the flow some.

scr38 has mentioned that the 4X2 and 4X4 Armadas have 4 cats, so the only thing I can think of is this is due the the heavier weight of the Armada vs the lighter Titan. Heavier vehicle=more work required by engine=poorer emissions. ???

One of the Pros of the Titan, is Also the Con.
Every mod to this Vehicle is New. Everything is Trial and Error.
I'm curious if JT, SCR38, GR8titan, haven't Already removed their Second set of Cats, and checked the "Smog" readings?
Many Moons ago, I was a Smog inspector for Dallas County (Texas) which is similar to California Standards. I've seen Chevy trucks w/mufflers removed completely, allowing low emmissions, and using to cats to "muffle" the sound. I couldn't pass them (Texas required mufflers), but the Idea was Great!
If the 1st set of cats are bolted directly off the manifolds, with the Resonators behind them (which look like mufflers), then you could completely Remove the Main muffler Altogether?
Has anyone tried that?

That might be a little loud for most people I would think. This Endurance motor in my opinion makes more noise than any other V8 trucks I've heard.

I'm betting that as long as the vehicle is not in 4WD mode, that it would pass the smog test, but possibly not the visual test. Afterall, the front cats are the same on both 4WD and 2WD. That's why I'll be keeping my secondary cat sections after putting in the test pipes, so I can pop 'em back in before the emissions test.

However, my search took me to this website www.modernperformance.com/all/resonators.shtml They retail T-304 stainless steel straight flow 2.5 inch inlet/outlet resonators for $44.99. I just installed my custom Ractive true duals and am very satisfied with the sound levels and looking for more performance gains but would like to keep the present sound quality. It didn't really get much louder. I love the way it sounds, but I want to get rid of the crackling sound when you floor it. It sounds like a big block V8 which is fine. I just prefer a deep sounding exhaust without any kind raspiness or popping sounds.

I have plans to remove the 2nd set of cats (4x4) with 2.5 inch straight pipes for additional performance gains like M95. Will resonators like these closely duplicate the sound muffling properties of the 2nd set of cats that will be removed? Thanks.

Oh I gotcha . . . Yeah, it crackles pretty good at full pedal but I like it! I can see your point though. Those Dynomax resos should deepin things up. I am curious to hear your review.

I had some work done to the pipes. It's in a new thread: http://www.clubtitan.org/postt2434.html
