: reverse clunk
dilleyoshemp 03-17-2005, 04:55 PM does everyone on here get a clunk noise and feel when shifting from drive to reverse? ive read something about it long ago but i dont remember if this is something normal with titans or it is something wrong, id like to find out before i go to the dealership with this thank you everyone
TheGoose 03-17-2005, 05:03 PM I get the clunk as well... especially from park to reverse.
Unfortunately I think the "clunk" is normal when shifting to reverse. But it would be interesting to hear from the dealer on the cause.

dilleyoshemp 03-17-2005, 05:16 PM guess its normal till a tsb comes out or something, i dont think ill be bringing it in then
Canada0937 03-19-2005, 04:11 PM Someone tell me if my memory is failing or not (I'm just too lazy to go out to the truck to get the owners' manual), but I read that the clunk is the ABS brakes system doing a diagnostic/check. Someone get their manual and confirm this, hurry!
ModlessG 03-19-2005, 07:20 PM Never heard a clunk from mine.
mdinkle 03-19-2005, 07:44 PM Mine is quiet also.
LDOTITAN 03-19-2005, 10:42 PM No noise here.
dilleyoshemp 03-21-2005, 01:51 PM Someone tell me if my memory is failing or not (I'm just too lazy to go out to the truck to get the owners' manual), but I read that the clunk is the ABS brakes system doing a diagnostic/check. Someone get their manual and confirm this, hurry!
this is true, when you start the truck in the morning and head off, after a few feet, you hear/feel a faint clunk, i have this, but what im talking about is different, its when shifting into reverse, for example backing into a parking space, you shift from drive to reverse to back into it, when you shift you get a clunk
dilleyoshemp 03-21-2005, 01:53 PM btw ppl seem to have this, ive read a few threads on titantalk about it, but the threads are somewhat old now and i was just wondering if anybody got it fixed or it was still deemed normal for now by nissan
TheGoose 03-21-2005, 01:56 PM Do you have a bracket shifter or a column shifter? I have a bracket shifter and have the same clunk you do shifting from Park into reverse, and it is especially apparent when I'm on a hill... I think its just the bracket shifters that have this problem...
dilleyoshemp 03-21-2005, 02:00 PM ive got the gated shifter not the one on the column
TheGoose 03-21-2005, 02:03 PM let me rephrase... I have gated (I call them bracket, long story) as well.... Personally, I think its the shift mechanism the moves around the gate that makes the clunking noise... The column is much smoother...
NateL 03-21-2005, 10:28 PM My truck doesn't do what you are describing, but I did have an old truck that did it. IT was in bad need of a new u-joint at the rear axle. Replaced the ujoint and the "clunk" went away. You might try grabbing your driveshaft and twisting it back and forth to see if you get the clunk.
I don't recommend doing this while the vehicle is moving though, there aren't any good places to hold on to under our trucks
Redright9 03-22-2005, 03:32 PM I would say the clunk you are describing is normal..I have noticed these trucks have a clunk when shifting at times and from what I have been told by many techs and Nissan so far is that it is a normal concern.
Rossi 03-22-2005, 03:35 PM Odd that some do and some don't. Mine to this point has never done it. I'm actually pretty impressed with this 5 speed tranny. It shifts VERY smooth through all gears. I had an 04 F-150 Supercrew 4X4 4 speed and it's transition wasn't as smooth as this.
dilleyoshemp 03-22-2005, 03:38 PM dont get me wrong it shifts smooth when driving, its only when going from drive to reverse, oh well, its not a big deal, ive noticed that when hauling heavy loads in the bed which i do normally, the clunk into reverse seems to go away, any ideas?
xsive11 03-22-2005, 04:15 PM ive got a 4x4 that does the same thing every time. i have a column shift. im at 18k miles w/o diff fluid change too.
