: How To - Install the PRG leveling kit
JetTech 03-20-2005, 03:14 PM I would like to thank prerunner Greg for offering this wonderful kit to us Titan owners. I was a little skeptical when this kit was first offered because on some trucks it almost looked like the front was higher then the rear, and that wasn't what I was interested in at all. But now that I've actually got the kit installed on my truck it sits PERFECT!!! The front is about 3/4" lower then the rear so I was able to retain just the slightest bit of forward pitch of which is EXACTLY what I wanted.
I installed the kit yesterday afternoon and took some pics while I was doing it. Unfortunately the pic of the actual strut install blurred out on me :crying: so as you're looking at the pics I had to put a lot of information on the last pic of the install. Also the full size pics are available on my pixagogo link at the bottom of my signature. Believe me though it's a very straight forward mod and the instructions supplied are great.
Again, a huge thanks to Greg...... :fan2: I'm now an official PRG leveling kit fan!!

I been waiting all night for these pics. Great install and as always top notch pictures and directions. I cant wait to get mine now. Might have to make a road trip to your house though. LOL

JetTech 03-20-2005, 03:26 PM You may want to take your time and check the alignment after you've installed it because I went from 1/16" toe-in to 1/2" toe-in. It took a half of a turn on the left and right tie rod ends to get it back to spec. So either plan on going to get it aligned immediately after or take your time checking it initially and setting it when you're done. Actually I'm going to make an appt. this week to get mine checked at the dealership just to make sure it's perfect.
JetTech 03-20-2005, 03:28 PM Look at the last 2 pics......Does that look GREAT or what.....It now looks like a true 4x4....
How bout the ride. You haven't said anything about it yet. Remember I was telling you how my 4x2 bottoms out on the front end when I hit bumps or dips. I am hoping that this kit cures this problem.
M4ck
JetTech 03-20-2005, 03:44 PM It rides great, of which it did before so that's a good thing!! I haven't had a chance to hit any huge bumps or put it through its paces but I'm sure it will be fine. I bet it will make a big difference on your 4x2...
Nice job on the write up as usual JT!!!
PrerunnerGreg 03-20-2005, 05:33 PM Man, you dont know how happy it makes me to see how much you guys like the new look of your trucks. As for the 2x, it really has too soft of spring from the factory. The urethane bumpstops will really help prevent the harsh bottoming.

I am confused on how you measured that. If I do this I would like to know how as well. Is there a way you can type of some more detail instructions on the toe in part?
Beast305 03-21-2005, 08:32 AM Almost forgot, did you install the rear kit too?

Check out the first 3 pics and hopefully that will help you. I used a homemade plumb bob to get my toe readings. I can elaborate more if the pics alone don't help you.

No, just the front kit.

Yea I was having trouble with the pics.
JetTech 03-21-2005, 11:25 AM Stop in at a local hobby shop and buy 2 plumb bobs, attach one to some twine or string, then drape it in the middle groove of your tire. Figure out length you're going to need and tie the other plumb bob on so they both are about 1/8" from the ground. Make sure the string is centered on the tire, this will mean on the BF's that it will be in between the tread blocks, on the Goodyears you'll want to tape it, at several locations, along the middle tread block.
Make sure your steering wheel is straight and make 2 marks at the front and rear of the tire where the plumb bobs are pointing. Do the same to the other tire. Now measure the distance between the marks. If you need to do an adjustment you'll have to roll the truck back and forth several times for the suspension to settle out before you check it again.
Does this help any??

Yes a great deal. Thank you.

Very helpfull
del-perro 03-21-2005, 01:27 PM JT --
Great idea using the plumb-bobs. Back in my younger days I remember just using the old tape-measure from fixed points on the tires.
Question: Do you have the rear spring-helpers installed also?
Rossi 03-21-2005, 01:38 PM I would think you would want to take it to a shop though. Typically when the controll arms are pushed down it will give you a little negative camber...the top of the tire will lean in slightly. Caster, alignment of the ball joints should stay the same.
So unless you have a alignment machine I think I would take it in. And if you do adjust the toe yourself....MAKE SURE YOU TURN EACH TIE ROD END THE EXACT SAME AMOUNT. Or when you drive it you'll know what I mean. Your steering wheel will be off center.

I removed them before I installed this kit. I may try to put them back on but if it lowers the rear more then the front I'll install the rear blocks to jack it up a little bit.

Shop visit is a must in my opinion, also it appears it gave me a little more positive camber then what I had.
Rossi 03-21-2005, 04:25 PM Really.,....positive camber....you've got an outward lean? Now if you lowered it I would think so. But I haven't really looked at the control arms on the Titan and it has been a long time since I have played with alignment.

Mine was the same. So have all other cares I've done suspension mods on. Raising gives positive, and lowering gives negative. :)
Rossi 03-21-2005, 04:40 PM Ok...brain just working backwards!! Haven't had my V8 today.

How about headlight adjustments, do you think it's needed?
I have been wondering about that for a while, I am always getting flashed. (highbeams that is)(explain for Rossi!)
JetTech 03-26-2005, 11:46 PM How about headlight adjustments, do you think it's needed?
That's a great question because believe it or not most Titans are delivered from the factory with the headlights adjusted too high.
I'll need to adjust them down a bit and just might do a "how to" on it because it's extremely easy but you need a torx wrench in order to adjust them. Any interest in a how to on the headlight adjustment???? There are adjusters on the fog lights as well, those too???

Sure, do them both!
I made a post on ClubArmada about the adjustment.

Trogdor 03-29-2005, 11:07 AM Well, I've lurked long enough. Great info Jettech - I've always found your posts to be super helpful (either back at TT or here).
I'm looking to do the PRG install and I posted this at TT, too. But I wanted to post here, as well.
I'm in Atlanta (aka Hotlanta or the ATL - okay, I'm actually in Chamblee) and am thinking about doing the PRG install (both front and rear) on my 2x4 OR KC. I wanted to see if anyone out there was also thinking about doing it but didn't want to go it alone. If so, let me know ... I haven't purchased the parts as of yet, but it's just a matter of time (and a matter of convincing my soon to be wife).
Any interest?
Trogdor 03-29-2005, 11:28 AM Sorry - just to clarify - I'm seeing if anybody out there wanted to get together and do some PRG installs. Two brains are better than one kinda thing.
Sorry - just to clarify - I'm seeing if anybody out there wanted to get together and do some PRG installs. Two brains are better than one kinda thing.
I am sensing a little apprehension of doing the install. Don't worry about a thing, it is much easier then what you think it is going to be going in. Greg gives his phone number on the directions if you would run into something you don't understand. If you would feel better, I will PM you my number, and I am sure JT would offer the same. GO FOR IT!!!!!
JetTech 03-29-2005, 02:44 PM Welcome trogdor and I'm glad you're not lurking anymore..
If you can't find anyone interested in getting together just let me know and you can bring it to my house if you want. Air tools make the whole thing go pretty quick, and now that I've done mine it won't take anytime to do another one. I too am going to get the PRG rear lift blocks, I just haven't ordered them yet.
Just let me know.
Dale
Rossi 03-29-2005, 02:46 PM I imagine if you have never pulled a spring/or strut out of a vehicle before it can be intimidating. Just be easy with the jack when you drop the lower control arm. If I had not done it before....I'd be apprehensive also. Just give Gregg a call or BiXll can use some of JT's flying miles and come over and give you a hand!? Will these wings help?
Trogdor 03-29-2005, 02:59 PM Wow, thanks for the support guys. Yeah, I'm new to the mentality that "hey, I can actually do car maintenance". I was very proud of myself for changing the rear diff oil, for example. I also replaced my passenger side BT mirror, so I'm slowly adding to my car competency (EXTREMELY SLOWLY). I'd like to do an oil change eventually, but I'm not quite there yet.
It doesn't help that I'm living in an apt complex - no garage. Anyhow, I make do. I definitely don't have many fancy tools or even a jack (obviously necessary for the PRG kit). I guess what I'm saying is that I might just take you up on that offer, Dale.
Thanks for the outpour of support, again. I've spent most of my time on TT, but I think I might start changing my ways. CT is a much smaller feeling community it seems ...
Thanks - Justin

You don't have to choose Justin. Both sites have a lot to offer, take advantage of them both!
Trogdor 03-29-2005, 03:15 PM Yeah I know. But inevitably, I imagine you spend more time on one site than the other ... but I agree. As long as both are talking about Titans, I'm sure I'll be visiting both.

Hey JT,
Let me know if you and Justin get together for this install. I don't have the PRG lift (yet) but I would like to see how it is done.
Thanks

I am going to attempt putting mine on this Saturday. Hope it goes well or I will be calling JT to come and visit me Sunday morning to fix it.

Will do Matt. It's up to Justin as to when because as quick as this job is I could do it any evening or on a weekend.

Man don't tempt me too hard I just might. LOL Let me see what all is going on.

firecracker 03-30-2005, 01:21 PM M4ck, maybe you should just meet up with JT and the others and make a weekend of it!
Trogdor 03-30-2005, 02:20 PM Okay, so I've been talking to Greg and he's going to make a 2 inch front and 1.5 inch rear for me. My current height is 35.25 in the front and 38 in the back. SO, with the Jettech springs (planning on adding) and the resulting .5 inch drop plus 1.5 inch block raise, I get to 39 inches in the back and 37.25 in the front. Thus the rake goes from 2.75 to 1.75 inches.
This is virtually the same mini-lift as Qwikwhip's (he said he was going to post a picture this weekend with the 1 in blocks - I don't think he's got the helper springs so my 1.5 will approximate his 1 - could be wrong). Greg said he could ship them as early as Friday and as late as Monday. SO - not sure how long it will take for them to get here from Cali. I'm guessing end of next week.
When is good for you Dale? Also, what is your beer (or otherwise) of choice???

I'm running 2.5" in front and 1.5" in rear. I will get some helper springs soon to lower the rear .5" and help with axle wrap, but I have been testing this config and reporting the results back to PRG. I can tell you that the axle wrap feels a little worse and the shocks stock Ranchos have only been a problem when I go over a speed bump too fast, drive off a curb or something that will allow one side to droop a couple inches.
I will upgrade my shocks to either the PRG recommended Bilsteins (when he finds some he likes) or to the Rancho RS-5000's that Mike H. is using. The front end rides so much smoother now, that it makes the back end feel rougher. Mike H. said the RS-5000's are a little softer than the stock Ranchos.
Trogdor 03-30-2005, 03:39 PM Interesting to know - yeah he mentioned that I might want to think about upgrading the shocks eventually. It doesn't seem like a very costly mod to do (Mike H's were like 87 delivered, if I recall correctly).
I'm looking forward to the ride change of the front spacers ... hope the rear ride change isn't too drastic, but then again, I don't mind the bumps much. They're kinda fun, actually.

Yes, Mike's shocks were $87 delivered, the Bilsteins wil be a little more than those.
I don't think the rear blocks changed the ride in the rear, I just think the front end is so much smoother that I feel the bumps more in the rear. I am hoping the new shocks will help make the ride a little more even between the front & rear. I might also go out and double check my tire pressure on all 4. It has been a couple months since I blew them all up to 37, so I need to double check the PSI now that it is warming up.

mototitan 11-12-2005, 08:42 PM I want to install this kit. Do I have to install the rear blocks also to make the level perfect?

No, we have been putting the rear blocks in to keep a small amount of rake.

With the front kit it sits perfectly level, like BiXLL said if you wanna keep a little rake go for the blocks.
echoplex 03-26-2006, 11:52 AM OOoooOOOooooo, I SO want to do this MOD. Again, I'm a little hesitant but there are a million and one mechanics where I live so I shouldn't have any problems as long as I buy a case of beer and invitre them all over ;)
PrayforSnow247 05-09-2006, 12:07 PM Can anyone chime in on about how long this will take, front and back?
JackedTitan 05-09-2006, 12:12 PM That's a great question because believe it or not most Titans are delivered from the factory with the headlights adjusted too high.
I'll need to adjust them down a bit and just might do a "how to" on it because it's extremely easy but you need a torx wrench in order to adjust them. Any interest in a how to on the headlight adjustment???? There are adjusters on the fog lights as well, those too???
They are easy to adjust, the funny thing or I mean the sad thing is when I got my lift kit I asked the service manager at the dealership how to adjust them and was told their not adjustible.....LOL
LDOTITAN 05-09-2006, 12:55 PM Can anyone chime in on about how long this will take, front and back?
A skilled mechanic with the right tools can do this in about 2 hours.
PrayforSnow247 05-10-2006, 08:15 AM Thanks..... So I guess someone who estimated it would take 5 hours is not a "skilled mechanic" LOL
LDOTITAN 05-10-2006, 12:23 PM Thanks..... So I guess someone who estimated it would take 5 hours is not a "skilled mechanic" LOL
....or gave a conservative estimate. Members here have installed the leveling kit in a couple of hours. I payed to have mine done, so what does that tell you about me??!?!
blkbelt65 06-28-2006, 11:11 AM Nice job, thanks Jet. We've got the exact same truck.
TitanCrew 06-28-2006, 03:41 PM I just had my mechanic do the install of the 2'' spacer and the alignment in 2 1/2 hours. He only charges me $145 total. I thought that was well worth it. I love doing work myself but it's a pain finding all the tools. By the time I find everything it would probably start raining. I will try to post a pic soon.
O.K. here is a pic with the PRG 2" spacer install and a few other new pics
NKTITAN711 06-28-2006, 09:59 PM That's an EXCELLENT price. It looks great too. I spy a fellow PBA member.

adamsrk 10-08-2006, 06:52 PM I want to order this kit. Is there a discount for members? Thanks
leukus 03-18-2007, 11:20 PM This is a awesome write-up. I am going to install my kit tomorrow night. Does anyone know of a right up like this for the rear blocks. Or does anyone have any info on the rear blocks.
Thanks

The rear blocks are nothing! Simply take U bolts off and jack up frame/body until springs are off the axle. Place blocks in, making sure holes line up, lower truck, put new longer U bolts on.
puckerth 04-22-2007, 08:34 AM Any advice on how to get the nut off the upper ball joint that hold the spindle? I took it down most of the way and broke the spindle free, but now I can't get the nut to loosen as the whole stud is spinning. I pushed the boot up but it's just a smooth rod that I can't get any grip on. I can't get the nut to go up either, so I'm in some desperate need here!
TitanTexan 04-22-2007, 01:38 PM Try using a hammer, it should pop out then.
puckerth 04-25-2007, 09:54 AM Word of advice...make sure the threads on the upper ball joint are clean and clear before you take the nut down! Mine got caught on something about halfway covering the cotter pin hole and I ended up having to replace my whole upper A arm assembly since you can't get just the ball joint.
JetTech, you show us how to mark for the toe in but you didn't show us how to adjust for the toe in or did I miss something?
