.....and I hear this big commotion going on with my dog on the back deck. For some reason her barking seemed different, as if something was actually there. I'm kind of accustomed to hearing the typical neighborhood dog-to-dog communication network, and can distinquish an intruder alert. Before I continue, here's a little about my dog.

She's half Beagle, half Rat Terrier. Though I haven't witnessed it myself, I've been told that this dog catches birds in mid-flight, as they flee the yard. We have a fencless/wireless system that allows her to roam freely within a 100ft radius around the house. She knows her limits, and knows how to hunt within those limits. Before we got the containment system, she was the neighborhood thief, stealing shoes, toys and anything else she could get.

Back to the commotion on the deck. As I walked to the door, I was shocked to find blood all over the deck. I then ran to the door to find this huge a-- bird, which I first thought to be a chicken or something, thrashing about all over my screen. After he calmed down, I realized it a huge buzzard. What do I do?

I ran for the camera. By the time I got back the prehistoric monster had huddled down with his head in the corner. So I got a couple of shots that doesn't do the size of this bird justice. In the photo below, when he was standing, he was about the height of the lattice work. I tried getting him to stand, but he had lost too much blood to have the energy.

So did the dog somehow get it? I don't know, what the hell was it doing in my back yard in the first place? This is just one of those strange things that happen. But I wouldn't be surprised if my dog was out there playing dead...LOL

Dinner???? I know Beagles are supposed to be good bird dogs. Guess yours is one of the better ones. I'm guessing you live in a fairly remote area to have that kind of wildlife around. Wildest thing we have in my neighborhood is squirrels.

I have a huge mall (literally) 4 blocks from where I live. I am off a side road that ends at the river. So I do get deer and racoons in my yard from time to time. But I am nowhere close to being remote. I was shocked that it happened.

For reference, I thought I would add that the bird is bigger than the dog. Meet Betsy:

I felt bad for the bird too :tears: He looks so scared over in the corner, bless his heart :tears: I have 2 parakeets, though. I love birds. Any animals, really... Just ask Josh what I thought of the Easter Bunny thread 8O !! I think it's neat that your dog was trying to protect you, though...don't get me wrong :) That is one tough lil' doggy you have there!! Hopefully the bird is now out of your yard and will remember never to fly over your house again 8O !!

Unfortunely the bird, a Turkey Buzzard, lost too much blood...he's in bird heaven. I did kind of feel sorry for it as those birds serve a good purpose in life...cleaning up.

No I didn't, but speaking of smoker I sure could have smoked it up right. :bugsquash:

This is what's sitting on the other side of that screened wall. At one time, that was a rick of hickory sitting next to it. And I didn't use the wood to keep warm either. :pancake:
