I will be switching to synthetic oil on my next oil change and was wondering what kind of oil filter I should use. Is there much difference between the different brands? Thanks

Different strokes for different folks.

We had a guy over on TS, who is a diesel mechanic say that the Nissan filter was the only way for him to go based on some design flaws in other aftermarket filters.

Squidward has started stumping for this, so it's probably a good product too http://www.trufilter.com/contact.htm.

My only advice is to stay away from the Fram filters.

I'm going with the stocker even though it seems rather small.

After all of the oil samples I've done and others have done using the OEM filter, there's really no reason to even think beyond the OEM filter. Yes it's small, but the proof is in the numbers. If getting to a dealership to buy them is not practical due to distance, I'm sure one of our sponsors on the site will send you a box full of them for a reasonable amount.

I always use an OEM filter, or a WIX. Stay away from fram.

I just read my post and it didn't really come across the way I meant it to. I certainly don't want to discourage people from trying new things, after all, that's how everyone learns. But this particular product has been thoroughly tested, and the results have all been fantastic even with its small size. So I would trust the OEM filter due to these facts, and have peace of mind that there really isn't much on the market that's even worth exploring considering the relatively inexpensive cost of them.

Just wanted to expand on my first response a bit......:)

What about mobil 1 oil filters? They seem to be built well, anyone do any oil sample tests with it? I have 3 of them.

I don't know off the top of my head if anyone has, but I bet if you read through the samples I'm sure someone has. Mobil 1 makes a darn good filter, the only concern I have with them is the pressure drop across the filter. They filter so well that they cause quite a dramatic drop in outlet pressure going back into the engine. If I'm not mistaken, the drop was in the area of 50%. I doubt you will any problems with them, it's just the articles I've read and tests done with them that concern me. Just as a side note here, I've never seen a pressure drop test done on a Nissan OEM filter, so it could be just as dramatic as the Mobil 1 or not. That's about the only thing that hasn't been tested with the OEM filters.

If you want some interesting reading, go to www.bobistheoilguy.com and do some reading. Be warned though, that site will suck you in for hours so make sure to have plenty of time on your hands before you click on that link..:)

I use the factory filters on both my Nissans. It's designed with some sort of additional bypass cavity that filters the oil better than most aftermarket filters...so I've been told?

Good filters include but are not limited to (in no particular order):
Nissan
Amsoil
Mobil 1
Purlator One
K&N
I read on a forum where a guy tested and disassembled most of the oil filters and Fram was the only brand he specifically recommended against using.

I think that was squidward. He tore a bunch of them apart.

I'm running the Amsoil EA013 filter. No problems 30K miles later.

I'll keep using wix, in fact I just picked one up today. I should probably get around to changing the oil in the Titan, it's been over a year since it was changed.

Dude! I feel bad for your Titan!

It's only had about 2500 miles put on it in the last year and about 2000 of that was highway. Now that I'm back to driving it everyday it will go back to it's getting changed way too often schedule.
