Replacement

I recently installed a Volant CAI and love the sound but seem to have lost more performance than I've gained. The low end torque isn't what it was with stock and at 2500rpms it dogs quite a bit. I'm tempted to rip the damn thing out. I still have stock exhaust but wouldn't have expected to lose performance. Any one else experience this or have any ideas what's up? I've never bought a CAI before so don't have any reference.

Welcome to the club. They seem to go hand in hand by what I have read, aftermarket exhause. However I really doubt you could have lost performace with allowing more air to be pulled into the intake. Unless something is actually restricting your flow.....

Thx. But seriously it has lost some get up and go. Doesn't make sense at all.
I have warned many that the intake as a stand alone mod will loose low end torque. If you add an aftermarket exhaust, you will see the gains from the intake.

Could elaborate as to why it lowers low end torque BiXll. Don't make sense in my mind...but neither does alot of things!!!

Here is Jettechs response to this being discussed earlier.
Ok, let me throw my .03 cents in here to help clarify things.
Smoke, the dyno numbers you qouted are not completely accurate, the 256 I had was when the truck was new. When I did the Volant test the truck had about ~8K miles (I think) and it dynoed around 265 if I remember correctly without the Volant. With the Volant it came in at the 272 you saw on the dyno sheet. What the dyno didn't show was the "softness" I experienced below the dyno chart readings. This is what Bixll is referring to. So in reality you both are right.
When the Volant group buy started we both were concerned with how people would react to this softness that is typical of just a Volant installation. Thus the thread I started warning people of a Volant "only" install.
Just as our trucks get different mileage and put down different dyno numbers, they will react different to the Volant only install. I'm glad yours did well and provided extra gas mileage, but I do think your truck reacted in a different way then most I've read about and seen dyno runs on.
So to summarize this long winded post, you both are correct and I'm glad yours (smokedya2) reacted like it did. I hope this helps...
Here is another thread on the subject.

Should've found this place before I bought the intake. I'm planning on changing the exhaust soon so I guess I'll wait and see what happens with that.

No problem if you're planning on getting an exhaust, it will WAKE the beast in a great way, especially with your Volant on.
Replacement check your PMs.

So naturally the next question is which exhaust put on. Is there a thread or site which describe the systems out there. I was leaning toward either Banks or JBA but for no real reason.
A little off subject here but I've noticed that most people are posting mpg of like 11-13. I see 15-18 regularly with mostly city and some freeway (rush hour traffic though).

Yup, I bknow I'm Installing the 77 K&N tomorrrow but don't expect anything but a nice growl...too much back pressure with the stock exhaust..when the Borla comes in I'll be sure to let you know how well the two play together

I installed the Volant Saturday and it made a difference. The Volant coupled with the B&B sounds menacing!
More importantly, I was able to notice a performance gain. It was so obvious, that my wife noticed. I then took it to my buddy's house and he noticed it as well.
I also drove in my friend's 2500 HD Duramax. I like torque!! I'm hoping Nissan will bring out a diesel soon!
