: JBA Evol Production Change *** Bad News ***
Akoni 03-26-2005, 07:06 AM JBA Evol production change sucks!
Good Morning Everyone, I just received my JBA Cat Back sytem part # 50-1400. JBA changed there product design and sytem now sucks.
I picked JBA because they change out the resonators with the Cat Back system. So you get the additional benefit of picking up 8+ HP by having them removed plus another 9+HP for unrestricting the exhaust. (17HP and 23ft lbs of trq!) JBA no longer replaces the resonators with there Cat Back kits for Titans since the lovely state of CA decided it is a mod to the emissions. $350 for 9HP and 12ft lbs trq is not a good deal but a RIP OFF!!!
I spoke to AC at JBA and he apologized for the mix up (product change!). Another interesting point to make. I received no instructions and the muffler was not a JBA but a K&N! I inquired about this and was informed JBA purchased K&N exhaust devision and is including K&N as a subsitute in there kits. I purchased a JBA not a K&N.
I look forward to hearing from everyone! Pissed OFF and let down!
We had known about the change for some time now. Sorry to hear of your dissapointment. I did not realize they had bought out K&N exhaust though.
firecracker 03-26-2005, 11:15 AM Man, sorry to hear about your disappointment. I'm still thrilled with mine. Only paid $261.50!
Caltitan 03-26-2005, 11:35 AM I would not "settle" for that and would be returning it for a refund. Hopefully you can find a better exhaust for the same money. How do we know removing the resonators adds 8 hp? Did I miss a dyno or JT discussion here about this?

I was wondering the same thing!
m95roadster 03-26-2005, 04:05 PM JBA claims 23hp and 17 ft. lbs. which is the reverse of this post. However, this is also with their headers.
JBA must have told him the cat-back system adds 9 hp. So 17-9=8hp. I'm assuming this is how it was figured out.
flipper 03-28-2005, 01:46 AM They told me the same thing about the K&N muffler. I guess I got lucky and mine just in time before the production change. I would return in a hurry. I actually replaced the muffler with a 5"x11" magnaflow because of the K&N's cab drone and excessive resonance. The Magnaflow and JBA pipes seems to work out just fine.

My wife told me to go ahead and install it, I may like it. I used there published article from Trucking magazine as instructions and completed the install. The mounting holes on the flanges need to be 1/8" closer together; I had to tap them on with a hammer because the clearances were so tight. (JBA needs to readjust there jig!)
The resonance drone is terrible with the K&N muffler especially from 1400 - 2300 RPM. I examined the inside of the K&N before installing it and noticed there sound absorption material looks likes fiberglass.
The fact that JBA changed there product and did not update there website and dyno results is a misrepresentation a.k.a. fraud to the consumer! OK let me purchase a genuine diamond ring on line and get sent a cubic zircon!
I am going to give JBA one opportunity to correct this and redeem the quality of their product and reputation! I will keep everyone updated!

JBA informed me that it was a 9hp gain!

I dropped 0.15secs on average in the 1/4 mile when I got rid of mine. Doing the weight with ET calculations in a drag calculator, it was worth 8-9hp for me and I still run Moroso spiral-max mufflers in their place. A striaght pipe is probably worth 1-2hp more.
RockyMtnTitan 03-28-2005, 02:00 PM This kinda sucks, but doesn't surprise me. Since the old setup could easily replace resonators OR cats, depending on 2WD or 4WD, you can see how this could possibly get them in trouble with the emissions issue. Probably just a CYA thing on their part.
Rossi 03-28-2005, 02:20 PM Don't you just love smog regs.... That's the best thing about old cars....NO SMOG!!
flipper 03-29-2005, 01:10 PM They told me the same thing about the K&N muffler when I got mine/installed about a month ago. I did not like the drone and cab resonance (personal preference of course) so I replaced the muffler with a 5"x11" aluminized Magnaflow ($100 installed) and been pretty happy with it so far. At least the stock Y pipe and pipes got replaced. I should have just gone with a Gibson/FlowMaster in the first place.
QuadRacer 03-29-2005, 06:15 PM firecracker...do you recall if your muffler was the K&N version or an actual JBA? My system (has the resos (which i wasn't supposed to get) but has K&N muffler) is still sitting in my living room and I was just wondering whether to try to install or return. I know you and slurpie both liked yours, so I was curious if you know which muffler it is. Thanks!
m95roadster 03-29-2005, 06:44 PM Is the k&n muffler a bad option? It looks like a free flowing design. Either way they now own the k&n exhaust division so their systems will use these mufflers.

Yes, it IS the K&N version. And, I do have some drone, but don't really even notice it now. I still am VERY thrilled with my system! I'd buy it again if I had to do it all over again.
Hope that helps you............

If your system has the resonator pipes, I would go with it even if you need to purchase a muffler. That is why I choose JBA and got pretty upset! You could always sell the muffler K&N on e-bay for 75.00. The K&N is nice, it is just not designed for the Titan resonance frequency from the engine. Instead of it cancelling it, from 1400 - 2300 rpm's it amplifies it.
:)

There is no freer flowing muffler that cancels the resonance in a Titan. All will amplify it to some degree. I have heard the original system with the JBA muffler and it's pretty loud to me.

Whoa Akoni, you should browse around a bit on this site. We probably could have saved you the hassle. The kit was redesigned at the end of last year and unless you can find a kit (Impossible Trust Me) manufactured prior to 12/04 you aren't getting the resonators replaced with the kit.
I am curious though why removing the resonators on a 4X2 would be a modification to the emissions? I think they mean that on a 4X4 you would have to remove the rear cats to use the old system which is definately a NO NO in CA. The muffler shop that fabbed up my custom Flowmaster exhaust didn't hesitate in replacing the resonators and despite what JBA tells you they are NOT CATS. I say that because somebody at JBA was insisting to me on the phone that 4X2's had 4 CATS too they just looked different . . . :roflmao:
If you are truly unsatisfied, I would return the kit under the premise that you were led to believe you were getting something different. Let us know what happens.

It would be easy to swap out the cats on a 4x4 if JBA still sold the old version. People would order the 4x2 exhaust and put it on their 4x4s. That is why no one makes it like that anymore.

The product change occurred 12/04. Why hasn't JBA updated their web site data to reflect this? Hell, their DYNO results are not even valid now! Companies have a responsibility to be honest to their consumers! I like JBA but was rather disapointed that their web site does not reflect their product. JBA is working with me and will be updating their web site!
:)
QuadRacer 03-30-2005, 05:25 PM Thanks for the response firecracker. You have given me the confidence to proceed with installation! Probably do so on Saturday. Will let everone know my impressions.

Your lucky that you got the kit prior to 12-04. JBA is sending me the resonators and flanges so my local exhaust shop can modify the install. :) I have also decided to a SS Magnaflow muffler. Magnaflow uses a higher density asorbation material. Steel dampening with a synthetic material which should elimimate the exhaust resonance and it is a straight through flowing exhaust.

Mine DIDN'T come with the replacements. I've got the same kit as you. Manufacture date of Jan 05.
