I'll get some pics in later...so far so good, no noticeable loss in power A little gain in the 3800-5000 rpm range....It friggin roars, holy crap, I was used to the growl from my old Z with the typhoon...It actually scared the hell out of the 1st time I jumped on it...there's this once resonance frequency that the engine hits that roars though the whole cabin its short lived of course but it woke me up! It's really not loud under normal driving conditions which is nice but get on it and wow!...nice polished auminum pipe and about a 30 min install...didn't reset ECU, no SES light, but hell, I only got 400 miles on my truck...drove conservatively for about 10 miles...obviously not beatin' the engine too bad yet...but giving her a firm break in.

I 'm not quite sure, but no, mine is not legal in all 50 states and definitely not California, but I live in PA so I have no problems with that, It will not fail PA emissions tests and ther are no laws about Air Intakes in PA to my knowledge, I had my CARB sticker on my Z when I took it to get inspected the guy at Mineke or MIdas (Can't remember which one) said, yeah so, that doesn't matter in PA it'll pass it's new don't worry...really though I can't see what It wouldn't be CARB expemt....you're just ulling mre air...

From looking at pictures on the K&N site the 77 has the Mass Air Sensor in the factory location, where as the plastic tube one is near the throttle body. Besides material selection that is the only difference that I can see.

Nuc,

Are you getting a whistling sound on light throttle load?

This dosen't have the whistle its just a "sucking" sound...the k&N Typhoon intake I put on my Z whistled...I get a litle suck at light load..it sounds more like WHOOOSH than the typical whistle....The air fileter is ENORMOUS!

Reason I ask is because I get that sound (actually a high pitched vacuum sound), sounds like a turbo spooling up. It's only on light throttle when leaving from a stoplight you hear it. If you give more gas then the whooosh sound takes over. It gets annoying sometimes. I think I'm going to completely enclose it with plexiglass.

I know exactly what you are talking about, I mean exactly..I liked it on the Z (the whistle) but i think it would annoy me on the truck....I don't know if its just because its the non-carb exempt kit or what, but it has no whistle really..the best way to describe it is that its almost like a super intesnse Darth Vader breathing it.

i inclosed mine in plexiglass already. it got really loud and bad when i put the TB spacer on. i also ordered a dryfilter to put over it and that helped quite it up also.

no pic yet cause i just did it a week ago. i put a couple of brackets on the metal shield and cut a top to fit over the hole. i left it open in front of the headlight and the fender opening for cold air. there is also a 2 inch by 6 inch strip of rubber you can remove next to the washer fluid that will force air in from behind the headlight. then i took some metal tape and cut little strips to fill the gaps where engine air can be sucked in, now its sealed off from the engine compartment.

Till charging ...a 2 GB was 200 bucks...but I figue I can take 573 super fine 7 MP or 1125 regular 7 mp pix or 30000+ VGA pics and thousands of other combinations

and according to this manual I can take 24 hours of crappy video and 25 min of 640x480 of Fine video or 1:31 of regular 640x480 which is pretty good..we'll see I'm holding on to the receitp

K&N does not have a ram air pipe. Looking at the Volant ram air pipe, I say to save your money.

I haven't been posting in quite awhile, but have made it back. I see I've missed quite a bit. Anyway, I installed a 77-series a couple of weeks ago, and I'm very satisfied with it. No whistling, but it does roar when you plant the right foot. The differences between the 77 and the FIPK are: The FIPK is CARB approved and 50-state legal; the 77 is not CARB approved and is not legal in states that do an under hood emissions inspection. The 77 has a polished aluminum main tube, and the FIPK is all plastic. The 77 also mounts the MAF in the stock location, while the FIPK has it mounted downstream of the crankcase vent hoses. The 77 dynos at 17 HP @4800 RPM, while the FIPK is about 11 HP @5000+ RPM. I've noticed a crisper throttle response, and the truck really pulls smoothly when it gets up on the pipe. I haven't bothered checking MPG gains, since that is not really a concern for me. My only complaint is a minor one; K&N doesn't provide hose clamps for the plastic T connection for the crankcase vent lines, so I had to provide my own. No big deal. The install was straightforward with no problems. I wrote K&N about the warranty, because when I received the package, it said I had the off road/racing warranty, while their site claims the 1 million mile warranty. Since the kit isn't CARB approved, there is a one year warranty on the hardware, but the filter is covered by the 10 year, million mile warranty. They also stated they are awaiting CARB approval on the 77-series kits. If anyone is interested, I'll post a pic or two of my installed system.
BTW, it's good to be back!

It has been submitted for CARB approval-it just hasn't been approved (or denied) yet. I don't know all of the technical details on the differences in performance of the two kits, but the difference in materials and perhaps a filter difference make up the claimed HP advantage of the 77 over the FIPK. I'll try to get some pics posted sometime tomorrow.

Why didn't you just use the stock hose clamps for the vent hoses, thats what I did, they are a real BitJh but they are tight

I didn't unplug the battery...it dosent reset the ECU anyway, just like all new Nissans, the only way to reset ECU is the Gas pedal trick, or have a Serive Dude flash it....

No SES light ever, no whistle

and my understanding is that it will be approved 50 state wide, and don't waste your money on a Ram Air Scoop, It ain;t gonna get you anything, My buddy did the fluid mechanics calc on the air flow, he said that I need not even do the heat transfer part...then I reminded him that I'm in Management now, thus my Engineering skills have deminished to nil

Hey LinkNuc, the clamps I was referring to are to hold the K&N-supplied hose to the air tube, and then one to hold the other end of that hose to the plastic T. I did reuse the Nissan clamps that held the vent hoses to the stock resonator where the vent hoses connected to the T.
BlackTitan05, I disconnected my negative battery cable as per the instructions. When I fired her back up, I didn't trip any codes, and I haven't seen a SES light. You don't have to wait any period of time to reconnect the battery cable; just reinstall it when you are finished. As promised, here's a pic of my install.

I would think the 77 is a better system, the Volant is not a "true" cold air intake. I have had 2 Se-rs a 98 and a 03 both with "true"{ inner fender well} cold air intakes. Both systems utilized a K&n filter with no MAF problems. I think alot of people overoil their filters because of the "contamination" factor. I would rather the motor be able to supply enough oxygen as needed, not pull it by equalization through the stock or enlarged fenderwell opening. just my 2 cents.

No prob, Link. I should have been clearer in my first comment about the hose clamps. I just wanted to ensure that the hose didn't come loose from the air tube, so I put my own clamp on it.
