: Diff Changes/Transfer Case Changes HELP!!
doogietitan 04-07-2005, 06:27 PM first off, hello! im new to the board, ive been reading posts for a few months but i finally joined and am posting for the first time.....here goes nothing....
ok, so im pretty sure this is talked about rather often, but i am by no means a car/truck guy...i have an 04 titan LE 4x4, bought last march for work stuff, hauling equipment, havent done any offroading or anything out of the ordinary....anyways, im almost at 23000 miles and have never changed front or rear diff oil or transfer case oil, etc ....everytime i get my oil changed they tell me i should have gotten my front/rear/transfer all done at 15000, each costing $50 there....so i was thinking of doing it myself....no clue how to do any of it, which oil to use, etc etc.....ive read a few posts about it, especially the one with pics but there wasnt much of a how-to...any help would be greatly appreciated, even a HOW-TO would be nice with specific oils.....or should i just get it done for $50 each since the oil seems to be $17/quart....HELP!!
by the way i put those leaf spring helper things that everyone raved about for $22 and ive noticed a big difference in handling with much less peeling out when trying to squeeze into traffic.... :D
doogietitan 04-07-2005, 07:10 PM so i did some more intense searching and actually found a HOW-TO for the transfer case and a HOW-TO for the rear-diff in the "how-to" forum section....im dumb, sorry....looks like the rear-diff is super easy...transfer case looks easy enough as well, but didnt really have a step-by-step explanation, which i will need, im not automechanicsmart, haha, im assuming i just wipe the drain plug off, re-fill it, and go?? is the front-diff as easy as the rear?
heres my thinking so far, tell me if im wrong/right:
1. front diff - how many qts of mobile 1 75W-90?
2. rear-diff - 3 qts mobile 1 75W-140
3. transfer case - 3 qts nissan matic-d
seriously, i feel like a retard when it comes to auto stuff....

Welcome doogie and I think you've come to the right place for help... :D
I would certainly change all 3 as soon as you can. It won't take very long and can be done on your garage floor with basic tools.
First off, all you'll need for tools is a 3/8" drive ratchet for the front and rear diff fill and drain plugs. Then you'll need a 10mm hex socket for the drain and fill plugs on the transfer case.
Supplies to buy:
2 quarts of Mobil 1 75W-90 for the front differential.
3 quarts of synthetic (whatever brand you want) 75W-140 for the rear diff.
3 quarts of Mobil 1 ATF for the transfer case.
Go to this link for the procedure on how to change the transfer case oil http://www.clubtitan.org/postt1030.html
Go to this link for the procedure on the rear diff http://www.clubtitan.org/postt1188.html
I know someone posted on how to change the front diff but it's really easy and will take no time to do.
Let us know if this doesn't answer all your questions.
CTTitan 04-07-2005, 07:20 PM Just changed the front and rear the other day. Here is a link for the front diff.

If you start off with all the tools and fluids I listed, it will be a piece of cake. Go for it and good luck!!! If you get stuck on something give us a shout, someone is always willing to help out here.
emcg24 04-08-2005, 06:21 PM Also don't forget the RTV Silicone for threads on plugs. I wouldn't take any chances of it leaking. Eddie

Be sure to post back to let us know how it went? Good Luck.
Does anyone know if you need any type of additive for the rear if you have the locking diff? I remember haveing to add something to my Montero when I did the rear a few years back.
I'd be up for a Denver Titan diff party if anyone is interested this summer. My place, beverages, tools, your fluid .

Hey Cal, I can't find any noted differences in Nissans fluid recommedations for the E-locker, which really doesn't surprise me. The additives that you, and many others have used in the past, are for limited slip units that use clutch packs in the chunk assembly. The E-locker doesn't have clutchpacks and therefore doesn't require any additives. Excellent question Cal, I think this is the first time anyone has asked this one.

What is RTV Silicone, and where can you find it?

They are referring to silicone like what you can buy at a autoshop or Wal-Mart. You can use teflon tape too or nothing at all....Generally it won't leak no matter what you use, even if nothing.
KYFHO 05-04-2005, 08:54 PM Thanks! As always you answered my question. :D

My pleasure kyfho!!!
blue73thing 05-18-2005, 10:55 AM On one of these forums (I troll here and TitanTalk) I noticed some info on the mandated Nissan-only fluid for the diff's on the '04's...something about heat issues especially when pulling a trailer. Anybody lurking here have specific knowledge of warranty ramifications for using non-Nissan fluids in the Diff's.

I haven't read anything pertaining to warranty ramifications blue. I doubt it's much different then anything else we do/use that is "not" Nissan specific. If you use a synthetic 75W-140 then you really can't go wrong. As an added not I haven't had a chance to do any research on who is supplying Nissan with their diff fluids. I doubt it's as high quality as Mobil 1, Redline, Royal Purple, etc. etc. But then again I could be wrong. I'll be sure to let everyone know if I happen to stumble on this info.
