: Questions about resonators...

I have a new '05 Titan 2WD and will be having a cat-back exhaust installed on my truck here shortly. I've been browsing this forum for a few weeks now and have read about removing the resonators. I have a few questions about them that I haven't been able to find answers to.

- What do the resonators do?

- Will it affect emissions (in Texas) to the point that it will make it difficult to pass inspection?

- What are the various ways to remove them? I've read where they've been replaced with straight pipes, but is it possible to gut them like cats in order to keep the stock look to avoid problems with dealer warranty work?

Thanks

The resonators help to quiet down the exhaust by giving the sound waves a small chamber/baffle to disipate in.

Removing the resonators should have little if any effect on emissions testing. It should not prevent you from passing a state test. However, I don't think anyone has tested without them since most states give you a few years grace with new vehicles.

I think the most popular way of removing them is to have an exhaust shop fab up straight pipes with flanges to fit in place of the resonator sections including new bungs for the O2 sensors. Going back to the emissions topic, this will allow you to reinstall the resonators easily should you have to for any reason. Gutting the resonators would be a chore and probably not look stock since it's the inlet piping just before and after the resonators that appear most restrictive.

IMHO, the resonators are the most restrictive portion of the stock exhaust on a 4X2 next to the Y-Pipe. Good luck.
