Hi everbody, I just bought a 04 Titan SE with 5,000 miles on from a dealer,it was a demo, and i love the truck. But i have had it for about a month now and im only getting 200 miles a tank. The tank usally has 6 gallons left in it every week when i fill up so thats only 10 miles a gallon. :( I asked the dealership about it and they basicly said sucks to be me. Any ideas or suggestions would be apreciated.

well to be more accurate set your trip OD and calcualte it with the actual gallons you used at the next fill up. I get around 340 miles on mine and it takes about 22 gallons to fill up. I always get between 14.5 and 16.5 MPG. 10 MPG would be about the lowest average I have heard. Most seem to be at about 14 or so. Unless you pull alot or drag from stop light to stop light.

In our download section there is also a Excel worksheet you can download that will help you keep track of the cost, miles, and where you got the fuel. Oddly enough I get roughly 1MPG better at Chevron then I do at Quick Stop. Not sure why...but I have tried this several times and it's this way EVERY time.

First fill up was 14.97 M/G
Second fill up was 17.5 M/G
...will have to get gas again tonight but..the other day I drove in 4 for about 10 miles or more @ 70 mph.....so its not gonna be that great.

Also it seems that some of the aftermarket items increase it. With afermarket exhause, intake, and TB spacer it looks like there getting a 1-3 mpg gain. Depending on the vehicle. that can up up to some big money over time.

Am I sure he's a troll?

Yeah, pretty much.

The legitimacy of "200 miles per tank" and the dealer's response "sucks to be you" should be an indicator something stinks.

Just my gut-level feeling...

WOW! Jim B likes to make a strong opinion right away! Well something does stink. I do love the truck. And I do use the trip meter to see how many miles I get from a tank every week. What stinks is it is 200 miles with 5 or 6 gallons left in the tank every week. that would equal 10 miles to the gallon with a 26 gallon tank jim, not 7. The dealership said if there was not any lights on in the dash everything is working properly. This to me is "sucks to be me". I joined this club because I thought it would be cool to have other titan owners to talk to.As far as being a troll goes... I am a single father of two little girls, homeowner, and now the proud owner of a 04 nissan TITAN. I have worked very hard for what I have and would appreciate your gut feelings be keep to yourself. :D I also have been looking in to the available mods for the titan. I ordered the tonnuea cover from the dealer wednesday. Did anybody else get the nissan cover? It looks pretty cool. Next Im thinking catback dual exhuast or maybe air intake. Anything to improve MPG! Any suggestions would be nice, Nissan doesnt make these as far as i know.

Hi Spunk and welcome to the club!!

Don't worry about what Jim said, most are on the lookout for trolls because they can be a real pain on any forum.

Concerning your gas mileage it sure does SUCK, big time....The Titan gas tank holds 28 gallons vs. the 26 you stated, so in reality you're getting less then 10mpg... 8O That is certainly not the norm here with our members so yours is horribly low. Keep track of it for the next several tanks by writing down your gas mileage, date, the conditions you experienced with that tank, etc. etc. After about 6 tanks of this documentation take it to the dealer. It makes a difference when things are in writing, even if it's you that wrote it.

Please keep us updated on how it's doing.....

I have never gotten as low as 10 mpg!. The average is 200 miles on the top 1/2 tank = 14.2 mpg and I do not light foot it.

Might as well try resetting the ECU. Leave the battery unhooked overnight and then see if that helps.

Relax my friend. If you want people to keep their gut-level feelings to themselves in a forum like this, I am afraid you're going to be disappointed. You post mileage results and a response from your dealer that is so off the wall, what do you expect?

If my dealer gave me the response you cited in your post #2, there would be issues far bigger than mileage to discuss with the general manager.

So, if you don't mind, let's get off that issue and on to your fuel problem. If you're only achieving 10, or 9 or 8 or whatever miles per gallon, there is an issue. It's too low. If you're relying on your onboard MPG indicator, hopefully the problem exists there -- but, I don't recall any TSBs on that component (I could be wrong). I have a blown rear axle seal and there's no TSBs on those either, although I am told several have been replaced.

Next time you fill up, do the math manually and see what you're getting. Fill all the way up and drive for about a half a tank, fill up again, and do the division. See where you're at.

Hey spunk. I too bought an 04 Titan from a Nissan dealer. The difference was that mine was a left over 04 and was new. I have around 1500 miles on it and have gotten around 13.5 mpg in town. Not bad consider that I have a 4X4 CC with big tow. I have not checked it on a trip yet but I figure I will get between 17 and 18 on the road. I was concerned about the first couple of tanks beccause I only got from 10 to 11 mpg but it has gone up. I put a Retrax bed cover on and it helped some I am sure. My comment to you, if you are getting that low a mpg there must be a problem with the ecu or something. I am like the rest of the guys, if my dealer told me that, I might consider contacting Nissan and complaining. My dealership would bend over backwards to help. Check with another dealership and see what there response is. It is still under warranty and any Nissan dealer can work on it. Good Luck!!

I did my first fill up the other day and got 13.5. I'm almost through the second tank and either I didn't start out with a full tank from the dealer or my milage is increasing cause I'm a little further on this tank than I was at this point on the first tank. I also put a retrax cover on(which is nice:) Next I'm going to do an intake. I'll stop there for a little while and see what I get once I get a couple thousand miles on my truck.

I've owned an 04 and 05 and religiously check MPG. I get 14-15 like clockwork.
However, I recently made a trip where I had to slow to 60-65 MPH (troopers everywhere) and had a brothers apartment full of furniture on the return. MPH was almost 17 MPG.
My point - Speed is about the only thing that has impacted MPG, but greatly.

I have filled mine 3 times now. The first tank I spent the first 100 miles with too many trips to redline. I then read the breakin proceedures and took my foot out of the peddle. My results are as follows:

Tank 1 14.5 MPG mixed driving
Tank 2 16.5 MPG mostly highway
Tank 3 15.0 MPG mixed driving

If I can consistantly pull 14 city and get the highway up a little I'm happy. I figure the highway mileage will get better when I'm done with the breakin and start using the cruise control (80 mph). My V6 F-150 was only getting 16 city 18 highway. I've got the big tow with lower gears.

I've had my truck for about 3,400 miles. I drive it everyday, but only about 3 miles to work. I started averaging about 9 MPG in the winter and it has gradually improved to about 12 MPG. It is an 04 KC 4x4 OR BT.

Asked the dealer in April about the mileage and they checked -- said everything is normal and just wait for a few thousand miles. I don't expect to get 20 MPG, but seems like it should be doing better than 12.

Does the ECU reset really work? Also, what is the "gas pedal trick"? I'll search some more.

I also only have about a 2-3 mile drive to work everyday, and I normally average 14.5-15. My last 3 tanks were 19.04, 16.87, and 17.03, but they were almost all highway miles with the cruise set at 90. Mine is a 4x4 CC big tow/offroad. I'm happy getting the 14.5 I normally get, but I was surprised/happy/excited on my last 3 tanks.

This is helpful info. About how many miles do you have on it? I've seen people write about needing 5k to 10k miles before the mileage improves. All of my previous vehicles (including other Nissans) met or exceeded the EPA estimates from day 1, but not on the Titan. I really wonder if there is a problem with my truck.

10 MPG is extremely low! Mine is still in the break in period and I get almost 17 on the highway doing between 70 and 72 mph. I would certainly check the MPG manually during the next 4 or 5 fill-ups. Stay out of the pedal and just do normal driving. If you are truly getting 10 MPG then go to a different dealership. I think everyone will agree that most Nissan dealerships would be more than happy to check your truck out. You shouldn't settle with a "sucks to be you" response. Good Luck!

I just bought my Titan the end of April 2005. Took it on a long trip over the 4th week. Put 3K+ miles on it in about 10 days. I checked the odometer, and found it to be 2.3 miles slow on 100 miles. In other words, I'd drive 100 miles, but the odometer registered 97.7 miles. On a tank of gas, that difference was enough for me to go from 17 mpg to 17.5 mpg. Has anybody else checked their odometer? I'm thinking that's a quit a bit to be off. Granted, it's in my favor warranty-wise, but still...... In town, I get about 13-14 mpg.

NateL

I've verified my ODO with a GPS and with a known measured mile and it is about 3% off, or at a true 70mph my truck shows an indicated 68. I've never owned or driven a vehicle that wasn't atleast 2% off, some I've driven were over 5% off. No system could really be 100% accurate there are way to many variables involved, just having worn out or underinflated tires can make a couple mile an hour difference at highway speeds.

I usually get 13-14 mpg around town in OKC, but when I am in Colorado, around 8500ft altitude, I get 16-17.

I usually just put in regular unleaded (87 octone), but regular unleaded in Colorado is 85 octane. So I don't know if it is the altitude or the lower octane, but something makes my truck run better(I can really feel more power!), and get better gas milage. And that is really gettin' on it everywhere I go.

Can someone please explain this to me?

I get the gas milage going up. Thinner air so the ECU leans it out to get the right mixture.Better gas milage. But more power? I can't see how a normally aspirated engine could possibly make more power at a higher elevation. It goes against the laws of physics! Unless the thing is dumping so much fuel at low altitudes that it's drowning the engine enough to reduce power by alot. I've also been wondering if my recent increase in milage is due to the ECU leaning the engine because of the hot, humid weather we've been having.

Supposedly the NTD (Nissan Torque Demand) system will factor in altitude into the equation and increase the engine output to compensate for the less dense air.....I bet that's what you're experiencing.

9000 miles and my city mileage has improved to 14.8 and highway to 17.6. I run 87 octane and I have switched to synthetic oil. However my mileage improved before I swithed my motor oil to synthetic.
