Just got my Titan two nights ago, it's got 280 miles on it.

This is great, except I really want to get on the gas a bit for fun. How long do I need to wear it in before I can go over 2,500 RPM? (I just picked 2,500 RPM, it seems like it's safe)

Thanks.

I babied mine for the first 1500 miles. I drove varying speeds didnt let it sit idleing to long and stayed off the highway. Remember the engine isnt the only componet that needs break in the gears need it the brakes need it ect.. Now at 32000 miles the truck runs great and uses no oil between changes it dosnt even drop a little in 3000 miles. I changed the oil at 2000 miles and went to syn blend.Enjoy your truck :)

I was told not to go WOT until 1000. Not saying that's the number to go by, just what I was told. I was also told not to go above 6k on my bike until 500 miles...but that didn't happen ;) and it runs great.

egines now days only need a 1k break in and you are good to go, just take it easy on the first 1k miles

Break in whats that? OH yeah break it in like you drive it. You know these engine are built that are sent to a research and development plant (nissans in the desert) and once there they put the engine on a machine and run it at WOT for days just to see the wear and tear. If you want to get on it a few times while it young just go for it. I'm not saying rag it out right away I'm sure you will baby your baby but don't be afraid to punch it a couple of times ;)

My break in has always been drive it like you always will, followed that with my bike, cars etc.. and never had a problem. But do what you feel safe with.

My understanding the the engines are dino tested at the factory to make sure nothing is wrong before it goes into the vehicle. I personally dont beleive in the breaking period any more unless I build a new eng. I broke mine in like I stole it. I now have 20000 miles on it & no failures or oil usage.

you folks really aren't making it easy, but I really think I'll baby it at least until the 1,000 mile mark.

There was one fella who posted in the oil analysis section about his oil analysis that came back with extra iron and chrome. It was bad, the analyzer said "This oil may have been contaminated. You have some problems with your engine" He sent him another sample from a new oil change, same type of thing.

I wish I knew about Blackstone labs's $20 oil analysis before a few days ago, I think it's a great asset. If I'm not mistaken, I believe they also sponsor CT....maybe a good time to have them mail me a Free sample kit...or a few for everything from the lawn mower to my girlfriend's Saturn.

Well, with a question like this one, you're bound to get a bunch of different opinions. Like I said, I babied the truck, but just like nystevecf, my bike was ridden under hard accel the first day I got it. You'll just have to decide what you think is the best choice for you.

I followed the manual break in procedures pretty closely. As modlessg says, the engine isn't the only thing that needs to be broken in. If in doubt, follow the instructions. No towing before 500 miles, No reves above, what is it 4000 rpms? No quick stops or launches. blah blah blah. It was a very long and frustrating period of time, but after its over its like you got another new truck because now you get to really see what it can do.

I did take it out and get her up to about 5000 rpm once or twice this weekend.

Sure was fun... but I'm just too much of a nervous nelly to start driving it that way until I get about 1,500 miles on it and change the oil at least once.

Speaking of which, I read the entire "oil analysis" section last week. Their really wasn't one better oil than another I guess. I think I'm going to go with the castrol 5w-30 synthetic blend from wally world. I used it in my 04 Mustang 4.6 v8 and it did just fine.

I can't bring myself to pay the $$$ that Mobil 1 synthetic costs, and I can't bring myself to leave my oil in for longer than 3,000 miles... I equate that to wearing the same set of socks for 7 days.
