i am in the middle of an oil change.i put 7 quarts in and ran engine. then i shut it off and waited a few minutes and checked level and it is barely over the low level mark. is it possible the 2007s take 8 quarts instead of 7???

I doubt it....

There's been no change in the motor configuration that would increase oil fll capacity.

Check your owner's manual and see what it says for fill capacity.
As long as it's in between the marks, you're okay.

Whoa don't overfill it thats worse then not enough oil to a point. The low lever mark is fine because odds are your engine has cooled off while sitting eventhough you turned it on for a second. At or just above L is right at 6.5 quarts on a cool engine and trying to get it up the stick when it's cool will be overfilling it because once oil warms up it gets thicker therfore taking up more space and moving up your dip stick. I have an 07 and 6.5 quarts is all you need.

I use 7qt everytime. 6.5 put my at a little under the mid way point, 7 put me a little above the midway point. Guess I should go 6 and 3/4 next time.:D

it might be that th oil filter you are using is a bit bigger

I thought the same thing when I did my oil this morning, but after driving it and making it level, I was fine with 7 quarts...

General rule of thumb: + 10% is not dangerous. So, a 1/2 qt more than rated is of no danger. Don't worry about it.

This is a very common subject on the Titan sites, because of 2 reasons: the 6-1/2 qt rating, and the 6-1/2 qts not reaching the full mark often. Many worry about just putting in the 7 qts in (who really wants to save 4 to 8 oz of oil?), but there is nothing to worry about.

Put an extra 2 or 3 qts, and you will have a reason then.

it might be that th oil filter you are using is a bit biggeri am using the k%n and it looks the same from the outside.i feel they should just rate it for 7 because it seems more people are putting in 7 then 61/2.it just puts it more in the middle of the marks at 7

I use 7 and get half way up hatch marks, looks good to me.

With 7 quarts I'm just under the max dot by 1/16".

Maybe a stupid question but when the oil gets hot it should THIN out causing it to take up more space. Correct? Just curious after reading through this.

I use 7 as well. Sometimes with clean oil its hard to see exactly where it is at. After running the engine for a bit the oil mixes with the remnants of the old oil, gets a little tint to it and you can get a better read.

Logically thinking yes when liquid gets hot it thins out, but the polymers in oil make it get thicker as it gets hotter to a point. (standard engine temps) If you overheat the crap out of it then it will boil basically.

Imagine a bunch of strands of molecules and most are only 3-4 molecule strands. Then when these molecules heat up the start sticking to each other creating bigger molecule strands. These larger strands represent your oil viscosity getting thicker as more connect to make a bigger cluster or molecule strands. IE 5w30 is 5 viscosity when cold and 30 viscosity when it's warmed up. Viscosity breakdown is the oil getting too polluted and the strands don't connect to give the oil it's purpose and then bearings and other friction surfaces get warn out or eaten up.

Multiweight oil is made to have same viscosity as a straight 5 weight when cold (W stands for Winter, or cold test temperature) and same as a straight 30 would be (if the straight 30 was hot) when hot. Oil does get thinner when hot, look at it when you drain hot oil, compared to the cold oil when you put it in. So,, a multi weight oil will not thin out as much as a single weight oil. 5W30 maintains the equivalnt of a straight 30 when hot, as opposed to a straight 5. Oil is tested at 2 temperatures. I believe they are about 32 and 200, but don't quote that exactly. Recent post here or TT provided more documentation of this commonly misunderstood and confusing labeling standard.

My manual says 6.6 quarts...not 6.5. 6.6 is equal to 6 quarts 19.2 oz. Hope this helps...

When a crankshaft has to run through additional oil, it causes additional horsepower robbing friction. This is called "windage"

Many drag racers run their engines very low on oil to gain the most horsepower.

Ok checked my oil the other day before and after driving and I'm stayng at 6.5quarts. I guess we all have differnt manuals because mine says 6.5 exactly.

from the owner's manual regarding the fill capacity
-
CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED
FUEL/LUBRICANTS
*
The following are approximate capacities. The actual refill capacities may be a little different.
When refilling, follow the procedure described in the Maintenance and do-it-yourself
section to determine the proper refill capacity.

Stay with 6.5 qts your don't want to overfill it.....
