: 135 miles with half of a tank? what s wrong?
alohaarg 10-17-2004, 10:42 PM well when i bought the truck it said 15 miles city 19 hway. i drive 70% hway and the rest in the city and the truck is doing less than 15 miles averange. what the hell is wrong? how can kill my gas like that? it does less than what nissan says it will do in the city and i drive most hway miles than anything else.
I know you will ask me how hard i drive but let me tell you that i dive my truck like an old lady and the tire are 35 psi and no matter if i use 87,89 or 91 gas still terrible.
My old car ( caprice 96 5.7l) was doing around 18 miles city and hway how can a 2004 car with a similar litter engine do so bad? this make no sence, after all this years you think they will get better gas miles cause technology is way more advance.
you tell me what you think i wish nissan was more honest and tell the truth and advertice the right miles per galon cause this does not make sence.
thanks
k9mrussell 10-17-2004, 10:55 PM The sticker on the truck is an average and is under perfect conditions. I get 16.7 mpg and I have a heavy foot. (I don't speed too much, I just get up to speed in a hurry  LOL) I get about 325 miles before I worry about getting a fill up. Not sure why you aren't getting the same unless your foot is heavier than you think. LOL
everyone will have different luck with fuel mileage. I get around 16mpg not great but its on par with most v8 full size trucks. Its just a little worse than my last truck. Not much though. The reason we hate it soo much though is not the mpg but the $ per gallon. Right now gas is like twice what it was just a couple years ago. this makes a big difference. If gas was still a little over a dollar a gallon we wouldnt think much of it.
just my 2 cents.
M4ck
Caltitan 10-18-2004, 12:49 AM ...If gas was still a little over a dollar a gallon we wouldnt think much of it...LOL - I'll settle for a little over $2 a gallon right now (So Cal region is ~$2.50/gal). I keep having to reset the pumps when I fill up now because my gas card will only allow a maximum fuel purchase of $50 per swipe of the card.
NateL 10-21-2004, 02:07 PM Take a look at the overall inflation rate in the US and compare it to how much gas prices have gone up in the past 50 years. I'd have to say I'm pretty happy with the way gas prices are. If you adjust gas prices for inflation, gas was a little over 3 bucks a gallon in 1980. Sure gas has gone up 30 or 40 cents this year, but until we start paying what the rest of the world pays, you won't hear a complaint out of me.
Blizzard 10-22-2004, 03:19 PM You don't say what size tires and how many miles your truck has on it. I have a KC SE with about 4000 miles on it and 18" tires. I drive about 95% highway (60 miles interstate every weekday and around town on weekends) and I average 19 MPGs. If I adjust it for the odometer error, I can get almost 20 MPGs with straight interstate driving. I probably average between 70-75MPH on the interstate.
Wow blizzard I believe we are going to have to call Guiness. LOL thats got to be the best MPG I have seen on any Titan. Hope you keep those kind of averages and I hope I catch up with you.
NateL 10-22-2004, 09:27 PM The best I've ever gotten was 16.1 or little over 17 if I go by my gps and not the ODO. That was a full tank of gas on the highway averaging about 75 with a couple full throttle jumps up the the speed limiter. I normally average about 14 overall.
Blizzard 10-25-2004, 01:05 PM Wow blizzard I believe we are going to have to call Guiness. LOL thats got to be the best MPG I have seen on any Titan. Hope you keep those kind of averages and I hope I catch up with you.
I filled up the other day and it was 18.1 mpg (376 miles and 20.67 gallons). I almost always fill up at the same Sheetz and the same pump. I drive about 60 interstate miles a day and 8 city miles (but I don't have to stop for more than 1 light usually).
I'm pretty anal about checking the mpg, before the titan I had an old F150 and that was the only way to keep up with it.
Blizzard 10-25-2004, 04:19 PM Here is a thread to the mileage some others are getting. I apologize if you don't want a link to another Titan board, but it was pretty interesting that we were talking about this and it came up over there too.
http://www.titantalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16722
no problem I link to them sometimes. I am an active member there as well.
beachandbush 09-14-2008, 04:20 PM Paying $4.30 in Hawaii, only getting 15 mpg, still love the truck though, hate opec....
Jaho1979 09-14-2008, 04:39 PM Wow, old thread!! I would kill for $2.50 a gallon now!
SP_Titan 09-19-2008, 04:45 PM I usually get about 180 miles for half a tank and all city driving.
baseballfanz 09-19-2008, 04:53 PM Wow, old thread!! I would kill for $2.50 a gallon now!
LOL, yeah me too.
I usually get about 180 miles for half a tank and all city driving.
Yeah but your city is small.:D
gasoutherntit 09-19-2008, 04:59 PM I got 154 miles to a half tank today...lead foot and a small town where the engine has hardly any time to warm up.
River Rat 09-19-2008, 05:41 PM I went 145 miles on a quarter of a tank pulling a jetski going 80mph except to pass people. I was surprised. haven't checked my mpg yet but im interested in seeing what it is though.
LDOTITAN 09-19-2008, 05:58 PM Somebody is digging REALLY deep into the CT archives!!!!
timmy_g83 09-19-2008, 08:01 PM yeah could have sworn I read this one before!
amtitan808 09-19-2008, 09:55 PM I get about 350 miles down to quarter tank, a/c on and sometimes lead footed to overtake, just to hear the growl of the factory exhaust lol.:)
memsu 09-23-2008, 10:12 PM Also remember when the low fuel light comes on you still have 6 gallons left. At least that's how my 08.5 is. I can regularly go 330-350 miles on 22 gallons.
VectorW8 09-27-2008, 03:17 AM I own the worst milage Titan on planet earth. I have never been able to get above 9 mpg with mine. Our last Nissan gathering was at the Nissan Tech Center in Farmington Hills and none of the employees from the engine management team wanted to discuss it with me. They only commented that when I first bought it I should have complained and tried to get the dealer to take it back. What kind of comment is that?
Truck runs great, just chews through fuel.
amtitan808 10-07-2008, 09:58 PM I get about 350 miles down to quarter tank, a/c on and sometimes lead footed to overtake, just to hear the growl of the factory exhaust lol.:)
Ok, now I get a little less than 300 miles down to 1/4 tank. Does the 20" wheels and 45 series tires have any effect on this? I still do about 4 days of driving before going to the pumps. Any ideas?
oej1919 10-07-2008, 10:50 PM Where was it documented that our fuel light comes in with Six miles left in the tank?
HRTKD 10-07-2008, 11:18 PM I don't know about documentation on when the low fuel light comes on but I regularly have ABOUT 6 gallons left when I fill up when the light is on.
I'm getting 17.5 MPG with mostly highway driving but it's a lot of hills. My best is 22.4 MPG between Cheyenne, Wyoming and Denver, Colorado.
MR2GO 10-08-2008, 10:03 PM the mileage you guys get is awesome. The only thing I can be happy about is gas is down to 2.89 in south Texas now. My truck needs a tune up among other things which may help my mileage out.
HRTKD 10-08-2008, 10:10 PM I gotta tell you I am really living on the edge! Today I filled up and it took 24.6 gallons and the Nav screen no longer said how many miles until empty. It just showed "*****". That's asterisks, not profanity. :)
I'm still paying $3.35/gal for 85 octane.
tgmotoman 10-09-2008, 01:50 PM I get between 12.3 and 12.7 mpg for city on 87 octane and I normally get 16.8 to 17.1 mpg when highway driving. if mixed driving happens it is typically in the 13.0 13.5 range. I drive aggressive and I'll be danged if I let fuel prices dictate my driving habits.
Overide 10-09-2008, 02:51 PM I have found if I keep the rpm's under 2000, (yeah i know it is really hard) I can get 20 mpg out of her. I rarely do this mind you, the Nismo CAI and JBA exhaust just sound too good in the higher RPM's!
Va.Titan 10-09-2008, 09:14 PM When i brought my truck home new it took over a half of tank to go 100 mi. After break in it should improve, but don't expect allot you bought the truck for power and it likes the gas. But should get between 16 and 18 hopefully.
warpath06 10-09-2008, 10:03 PM my two cents since this is always a popular subject....
1. Even though our gas prices suck, the percent of increase in price is not as much as it is in Europe. If in dought, look it up. Per gallon of gas and diesel, they have had a greater increase in price. My opinion is we wouldn't ***** about it as much if the prices didn't increase overnight when the cost of a barrel increases but it takes forever for the price to lower if speculation on barrel cost goes down. Ex. from $130.00 and $4.10 to $83.00 and $3.50 gallon. Let's face it, the corruption factor makes the higher price harder to swallow.
2. Too everyone, please specify when talking mpg if your are referring to your trip computer in your truck. We all know its not as accurate as the old fashioned way of miles divided by gallons and refilled at the same pump over several tanks and whether or not you stop when the pump shuts off or you go till it almost shoots out on your shoes.
3. Anyone getting over 20 mpg, GOD BLESS YOU!!!!
4. Do you have the equivalent of 3.73 gear or 4.11 in a 4 speed tranny? Huge difference. Probably around 400 rpms in overdrive and as you know the gaps gets even wider between the two the faster you go past a certain speed. And yes, I'm too lazy to look up our ring and pinion ratios for our 5 speed tranny.
5. BIG FACTOR-- WHERE DO YOU LIVE? ELEVATION, TEMP., HUMIDITY..
Higher elevation, hot outside temps., high humidity, big difference.
My truck-- 2007 KC SE 2wd with Big Tow(4.11 equivalent rearend) 47,000 mi.
Probably 50/50 city and highway and try my best to stay under 2000-2200 rpm when acceleration. With this rearend, I'm turning around 2000 rpm's at 70 mph. I live in Florida, so the 70 mph speed limit on the highway makes it worse for fuel economy. All mpg listings on window stickers are at 50 or 55 mph, I can't remember exactly now. THE BEST I EVER GOT- 16.5 MPG
I AVERAGE 14-15 ALL THE TIME. 265/70/18 FACTORY SIZE.
I can say this, it seems our trucks have the biggest difference between owners when it comes to mpg, I don't know. To the guy on here who was getting 135 miles on a half a tank, you might have a problem.lol Unless you're running 40 inch tires
Sorry for rambling, to sum up-- Best truck I have ever owned(previously all
Fords) except for the cheap plastic on the dash and the pitiful cloth on the seats. But when you get and engine that kicks every other trucks *** off the showroom floor, you realize where the budget went to on design....
Steve-0 10-10-2008, 09:23 AM haven't figured the exacts on my truck but all stock i was estimating around 14.5 - 15 every tank. since i did the intake and exaust i haven't driven enough to get an acurate reading but i'm guessing it is a little better. the needle doesn't fall as fast. and I'm in houston, High humidity and high temps almost year round. 3.73 rear end with the 5 speed auto.
LILRICH24 04-06-2009, 12:22 PM When I drove from my truck from California to Arizona and back at almost $5 gallon. I spent almost $200.00 for gas. I set the cruise control in Ca 65mph Az 75mph.
I fight the urge to want race another truck when it fly's right by me. :censor:
nmbronewinner 04-06-2009, 01:41 PM Not unusual for me. I get about 270 miles to the tank every time.
Blizzard LE 04-06-2009, 06:11 PM I had an 07 maxima that got a whopping 21.6 no matter how you drive it. My G35 get 26 and has 51 more hp!
1badD-END 04-06-2009, 09:38 PM This truck sips fuel how it feels man, not how you drive. Ill get 400 miles to a tank on one go round, and Ill get 315 on another. My driving style is usually the same, not light, but not hard. I set cruise any chance I get
nmbronewinner 04-07-2009, 08:51 AM I had an 07 maxima that got a whopping 21.6 no matter how you drive it. My G35 get 26 and has 51 more hp!
Those are some good numbers on both vehicles.
I can only get 23 on the freeway using cruise control with my G.
DarkblueTA 04-07-2009, 12:58 PM You don't say what size tires and how many miles your truck has on it.
Did that with my KC XE on the stock 17" rims, with the 18" rims, its about a mpg less.
In Katy/Houston, I just averaged 17.8mpg with my last tank. I normally keep the truck shifting around 2200rpms. Very rarely does it go above 2500 unless I want to just 'let it rip', then its WOT to 6k rpm shift. Again, 99% of the time, the engine doesn't get above 2500. That's the key to keeping good gas mileage. I run 70mph (+/-5mph) on the highways. That's just my $0.02
Truck is 07 KC nothing but AC & cruise, non-big tow(2.94 rear gear). In Tucson, I was getting almost 19mpg in town with the stock rims(17) and if not 20, a tick or 2 down from 20 on the highway between Tucson and Vegas.
In Kingman, put the 18" tires on, driving elevations from 3200'~>3700'~>500' over to Bullhead City and back. I was getting 17.5mpg religiously.
Moved down to Katy Tx about a month ago(about 200' above sea level). The fuel trims in the computer have finally started coming in. First tank was 16.5 and keeps improving. Last tank was 17.8. I usually fill it to the very top, not when then pump stops. Also noticed that my truck eats through Shell gasoline like crazy vs all the others but seems to sip on Chevron and Exxon(both towing a trailor and normal back/forth to work/etc). I usually fill it up at the Exxon on the way to work now.
Hope this helps.
EAC-ISR 04-07-2009, 01:37 PM i know i get about 150-160mpg on half tank:):)
TitanOD 04-09-2009, 02:04 PM i get like 13 and i could care less, if you bought a huge truck with a v8 expecting GOOD gas mileage you should drive it str8 off a bridge brother....
jceglartitan 04-14-2009, 12:19 AM i drive in town mostly and keep a close eye on the speed and rpm. i try to drive avg of 45 with rpm just about 1250 with overdrive gear working....otherwise it sits about 1800 in 4th.... ( i just filled up today....11.69 mpg....95% city...) i don't know how you guys get more mpg....i have been thinking of programing my chip or maybe do a cai, but not sure if it will really help that much. if i averaged 13 in town, i wouldnt complain.
I have 06 4x4 crewcab..no mods, all stock with 18's for tires.
HRTKD 04-14-2009, 12:27 AM Check your air filter. If it's dirty, clean it or replace it.
Check your tire PSI.
What viscosity oil are you using? 5w-30 is what the manual calls for. Using a 10w-40 will affect MPG.
What octane fuel are you using? I use 85, but I'm at about 6,000' elevation.
Does your location use a winter fuel formulation? Mine does and my winter MPG sucks compared to summer.
jceglartitan 04-14-2009, 12:31 AM air filter is ok...i think 5w-30, have not changed it since i bought it 1000 miles ago. It has 26000 on it. I use 87 octane and no winter fuel formulation....hopefully it will improve. Suggest 10w-40?
HRTKD 04-14-2009, 12:34 AM Heck no! I wouldn't use 10w-40 unless you driving through the Sahara. I run 0w-30 year round but I live in Colorado so the weather isn't so hot.
jceglartitan 04-14-2009, 12:39 AM i live in Omaha, NE so not much different.
jceglartitan 04-14-2009, 12:39 AM thanks for the advice..appreciate all the input from you guys!
christenayuca 04-14-2009, 03:49 AM 230 to a almost full tank ........i have a REALLY heavy foot....costly but o well :(
Greg Mullins 06-05-2009, 09:01 PM The best I have gotten so far is 19.1. That was 93 octane, averaging about 60mph on open highway... I average about 16mpg.
HRTKD 06-05-2009, 10:56 PM The best I have gotten so far is 19.1. That was 93 octane, averaging about 60mph on open highway... I average about 16mpg.
Try a lower octane and you may find that your gas mileage improves. The manual calls for 87 octane.
CrashBoss 06-06-2009, 11:14 AM My commute is 110 miles round trip. Of that 80 some odd is highway, the remainder light city traffic. Running around 65-70 (we have hyperactive troopers here) hwy and being easy in the city I average around 18.5. I will say that one thing that brought my mileage up by almost a full mile per gallon was the Lorado cover I put on. Prior to that I was in the hi 16 to low 17 range.
Running stock 18"s with the OEM Goodyear Wranglers SR-A (which I wish would wear the heck out...I hate them!)
Steve-0 06-08-2009, 08:10 AM I was averaging 14 - 15 till i switched to synthetic oil. since i switched about 5000 miles ago the worst i've gotten was 15.9mpg best was 16.8. not a dramatic difference but i would recomend it to everyone. Just running the valvoline synthetic for now, next oilchange going with purple.
97lowazznissan 06-08-2009, 11:07 AM I'm lucking to get 270 from full till the light comes on... I drive some what hard but I have noticed that it's better when I get gas at some places and not others... If I go to shell I get like 260 but if I go to Sam's club or on cue it's a lot better "306" and she runs better too and all of this is on straight gas no junk...
oklahoma_sooner 06-08-2009, 03:48 PM Fuel mileage problems could equate to many variables:
1. The way you drive
2. PSI in tires
3. O2 Sensor deterioration
4. Dirty air filter
5. Might have been driving against the wind (Plays a large factor)
6. MAF might be faulty.
7. Fuel filter might be getting old.
and so on..................
Keep in mind when Nissan tested the MPG they had the antennae plucked, mirrors tucked, and tail gate down to get the best wind resistance possible. Switch to a K&N filter, change fuel filter, and take your truck up to Nissan and they should check your O2 sensors for free. A custom tune will definately help create power, while helping with gas mileage, while pinpointing problems your truck might be having...GL.
97lowazznissan 06-08-2009, 04:16 PM I don't drive that bad all the time... :feuerkopf2-big:
I have had mine since july 18 2008
It has 11,236 as of this morning so I would hope nothing is bad on it allready....
But yeah Oklahoma is windy as crap all the time year around... LOL
rpeles 06-09-2009, 05:12 PM Lets see, 5200+lb, 5.6 l. V8, aerodynamics of a brick, big heavy wide tires -- its no Honda Civic.
97lowazznissan 06-09-2009, 06:46 PM Lets see, 5200+lb, 5.6 l. V8, aerodynamics of a brick, big heavy wide tires -- its no Honda Civic.
:duh: I think we all know that.... LOL
benbrookjohn 06-09-2009, 06:49 PM I hane an '09 with 12,000 miles and avearge 18 mpg, 95% is highway.:thumbsup-big:
Underagedtitan 06-09-2009, 10:41 PM I went 145 miles on a quarter of a tank pulling a jetski going 80mph except to pass people. I was surprised. haven't checked my mpg yet but im interested in seeing what it is though.
a couple weekends ago i got 135 miles on a 1/4 tank averaging about 55mph. i was stunned
s6jnieto 06-12-2009, 05:07 AM I just took a 220 mile trip this week and wanted to figure out my average MPG so I set the mileage and ended up with a average MPG of 15.8 with 95% highway driving.
I need to replace my front catalytic converters, I think (and hope) my gas milage will improve once I get that taken care of. Does anyone know if bad cats affect gas milage?
dneubauer1029 06-12-2009, 09:14 AM I avg 14.2 and it's about 99% stop and go city driving. Haven't had it to long so I still like to put my foot in it a bit to much. :) Even at that it's WAY better than my F150's 11 or 12 mpg. I have noticed though that it really drinks it if you put it on the floor. To much fun not to. haha.
jceglartitan 06-12-2009, 11:15 PM Just filled up today...22 gallons to fill, 292 miles since last fill, avg of 13.02 MPG... about 85% city. I try to keep it under 2000 rpm at all times. I notice that at 40 MPH, and on a slight decline, the tranny likes to downshift causing higher rpms....usually downshift to 4th and keep rpm at 1500ish. anything over 45mph and 5th gear works well.. plenty of torque/HP to keep me going.
I also notice that fro0m full to 3/4 i usually get about 60 miles...to 1/2 is about 200, but from 1/2 to 1/4 is another 50ish. last 1/4 goes quickly....
thought those analytical minds would like more facts and numbers to chew on.
