: Under Seat Storage $29.99
jaysplaypen 04-25-2005, 12:25 AM Well I finally got around to building the box under my rear seat for storage. I may have to make a latch of some sort to hold it in place but so far it is held pretty secure by the seats. I just let the the mats go underneath the box, so if anything spills it will get on the mats, and not the carpet. I got the gray $8.99 carpet from autozone, and it matches pretty good with the carpet on the bottom of the seats, but the floor carpet is slightly darker. I bought 3 pieces of pine from Home Depot, for a grand total off $21.00. The carpeting was eaiser than figuring out the angles for the wood, but it came out great.
Sorry for the dirty carpets, it rained here yesterday, and I am taking it in to the dealer to get fixed, and I am going to let them clean it up.
NorCal 4x4 04-25-2005, 03:07 AM Your under seat storage box looks great! I'd secure it though just in case you're ever involved in a major accident, since there would be no stopping it, (even if it is filled with gear). Again nice work!
That looks GREAT!
Just what I want need to do.
Care to share your measurements with us?

As soon as I get it back from the dealer I will draw up a diagram with measurements.
kytitan 04-25-2005, 05:46 PM Wow, nice work. :D
Great. I can't wait.
I hope you don't mind but I lightened your first and 3rd picture up so we all could see more detail. Here they are lightened up.
jaysplaypen 04-25-2005, 06:11 PM thanks Kuli
It was starting to get dark when I took the pictures, and I took the driver side last, so it got more shadow then the other side.
I am going to pick her up in a hour so I will get the info together tonight, and get it posted.
SimplyTitan 04-25-2005, 06:38 PM Great job!
jerseyparts 04-25-2005, 07:26 PM sweet, maybe we can get ya to build more, and sell em!
jaysplaypen 04-26-2005, 10:20 AM Here you go. As you can see I am not a professional Drafter, but I think you get the idea.
Drawing is not to scale. On the side and front pieces you have to cut the edges to a 22.5 degree angle to get it to turn the corner correctly.
Sorry Jerseyparts, people will be on their own on this one. The design can still use some work. Right now it is just a three sided piece that I will find a way to anchor to the seat brackets it butts up with, but if some one wanted to put a floor on it, it might be eaiser to secure. All though I do not like drilling holes through the floor pan, that is why mine will be anchored to the seat brackets. I was think for the next one I might build it in two pieces, that butt together in the middle. I think that way you are not commited to the whole back seat.
goval 04-27-2005, 03:19 PM Looks more like a divider to me. Good job though! Need help on the drafting?
Rossi 04-27-2005, 04:30 PM that looks pretty good!!! Not a bad ideal. Did you shoot some screws through the floor to secure it?
jaysplaypen 04-27-2005, 05:07 PM actually right now it is held in just by the seats above and does not really move much, but I am going to find some way to secure it to the seat brackets that the ends butt up to. I do not like to drill anything into the floor pan.
It is basically a divider that keeps everything from sliding out from under the seat when braking. I did not want to make it a whole 4 sided box with a bottom, because space is so small right now, and I needed all the space I can get. You could build it however you wanted. I am thinking about re-doing it and making it two pieces, so you could take one out and still leave the other. And I want to put a piece on the bottom just as a bracket to give the angled parts more support.
Rossi 04-27-2005, 05:31 PM hhhmmmm....just thinking here. But I may try something like you did and I may even use your diagram. I'm not too shy about shooting screws into the floor...you have to do it with AMPs.
But...if I feel really frisky I may place two doors so I can get to it without lifting the seat. I have two car seats in mine at all times and I'm not a fan of removing them.
But it's just thoughts right now.....will I do it...we shall see!!!
jerseyparts 04-27-2005, 09:23 PM Hmmm 2 car seats and Amps? how exactly do them kids hear anything?
Rossi 04-27-2005, 09:26 PM Hmmm 2 car seats and Amps? how exactly do them kids hear anything?
well I don't listen to it loud with them in the car...however....my three year old likes it...but the wife would kill me if we came home and she could hear it. We normally use the wifes SUV when we drive around...but I have to take them places sometimes. So we have a set for my truck.
goval 04-27-2005, 11:20 PM I don't like putting anything permanent under those seats. You need that space when you travel. I travel to NJ and I don't have the bed covers, so when it rains guess where my lugage is going? I had a subwofer box behind my bench seat, took it out and replaced the seat/console with a sub box I design, it didn't quite come out like I drew, but it came out pretty good. I'll place some pictures as soon as I have time to clean the truck, and finish up the touch-ups.
I sugest you find a way too secure that divider so you can "easily" remove it when you need the space.
Heavy duty velcro would do the job as long as the piece is tight between the seats and the floor, it will keep it from sliding.

exactly what I was thinking. I like things to be removable. I was thinking some kind of latch that would hold it to the seat brackets, but velcro might be better, then I will have to drill no holes at all.
RAWCCD 04-27-2005, 11:38 PM Looks great. Does it move freely when the seats are up? That's the only reason I'd want to anchor it - so it doesn't move when you'reloading/unloading the storage space. Nice job.
goval 04-27-2005, 11:48 PM next time if you decide to re-do this divider, use black carpeting, will look better.

That is another reason to anchor it. If I overload it any, it tends to push forward a tad enough for only me to notice, but I still have to push it back.
goval 04-28-2005, 12:00 AM heavy duty velcro under the front panel, and build one braket at the end of each side, next to the back of the cabin, you'll have to drill the bottom, but it will only be one screw. Use "a" good screw to hold the bracket to the bottom and a "wing" nut to secure the bracket to the divider, this way it's easy to remove it, it will keep the divider from moving foward and back during hard brakes and quick accelerations. Personaly, I don't like the fact of being a divider. I would use the same product but would build a back and bottom for this so the stuff won't move around. What you have looks good untill you lift the seats. This is a perfect example of a "ghetto" modification. Looks good on the outside, but not on the inside. If you want I can build a design for you, just let me know.
goval 04-28-2005, 12:14 AM So as I went to the bathroom to take water out of my knees, I thought about this cool idea, but before that, did you guys know that the best ideas are thought while taking a S@%*? Lol, it's the truth, I know this is TMI, ok let me go back to the subject.
Tomorrow, I'm going to come out with this design for an underseat storage that you don't have to remove it and you can put heavy stuff on top while the seat is up. Thought about it? Yeah simple, one with a cover that opens and closes. If it comes out good, I'll post it here for anybody interested.
jaysplaypen 04-28-2005, 12:19 AM next time if you decide to re-do this divider, use black carpeting, will look better.
Black carpet would not be better. everything in the cab is graphite, why would I want a black eyesore sticking out. The only reason you can see the difference in color is the floor mats. But as I said I left them going under, because it will protect the carpet from damage from stuff under there. If it wasn't for the floor mats the carpet colors are almost the same.
goval 04-28-2005, 12:23 AM I guess, I just don't like grey.
jaysplaypen 04-28-2005, 12:29 AM heavy duty velcro under the front panel, and build one braket at the end of each side, next to the back of the cabin, you'll have to drill the bottom, but it will only be one screw. To each his own I guess. You call it "ghetto" I call it improvise, adapt and overcome. I posted this for people who were trying to get storage without spending 180.00 on the plastic tub they sell. I am sorry you think it is "ghetto", because I built it the way I wanted it. I wanted to retain as much space as possible, because of the moulded floor pan, the aftermarket ones, or ones with a bottom have to be much smaller, because it can not go back all the way. I wanted to have all the space under the seat available including the jack. For instance, my Roadside bag would not fit in one of those aftermarket one, because it is to tall to stand up under the seat, so it has to lay on it's side. And even the way it is built now, the bag is laid at a angle, because it can not lay flat. And I have found once everything is in there it is not moving around. But I have a full supply of things I carry with me. I guess if you had one item back there, it would move. As for the bracket I am going to attach it to the seat brackets so I do not have to drill through the floor pan.
I think it looks fine once you lift the seats, but it was what I wanted. So if you don't like it don't make it. It was just a idea. sorry you don't like it.
Sorry for the Corps reference. I am married to a corp family, and we live by those words. My husband, mother and father-in-law are or were marines.
goval 04-28-2005, 12:38 AM I wasn't trying to offend you man, it's a good mod, like you said for not wanting to spend that much money, and if it came out the way you wanted, heck what I say or anyone else says. But again, if you're looking on re-doing this, send me the measurements, and I'll come out with a design for you, I do drafting and design. You're idea is cool though, I got a crew cab so when I come out with a design, it will be different from yours on the measurements.
jaysplaypen 04-28-2005, 12:57 AM It was not about the money other than not wasting money on something that did not fit my needs. My drawing is on the first page if you want to tweak it to your needs. I am okay with it the way it is. I might make it two pieces, but probably not. I do not have any reasons to remove it. So removabilty is not important to me.
And I never go anywhere without me detail supplies, So I have to have some where to put them. You never know when you will find a need to do a quick spray shine, or have to remove bird poop, before it etches the paint. I don't let the truck go for more than a day with visible dirt, like after rain or something, other than that it gets washed once a week, and waxed once a month. And in between it get show shine, and polished with micro fibers all the time. The deep water color demands so much attention to keep it looking good.
goval 04-28-2005, 06:56 AM I hear you, I'm the same way here, my wife gets upset sometimes because I wash the car every weekend, when we should be going out. Hey I only take about 3 hours to get it done. What's 3 hour out of 13? I got the same color. Your idea is nice, I might do something similar.
I would like to see a design / measurements for a Crew Cab. I just went out and looked at my CC and found that I could probably go with 20 inches deep instread of 8. If I go longer, say 24 inches, I would have to cut part of the bottom side towards the back but it could be bolted through the seat frame. It would only take 1 bolt on each side.
goval 04-29-2005, 05:35 PM Here it is, not too much space if using 3/4" thick wood. This is more expensive than the 29.99 one, but it's way better.
goval 04-29-2005, 05:37 PM I forgot to mention that you can bolt the ends of this to the seat legs, 2 of them.
jaysplaypen 04-29-2005, 10:45 PM your design looks very good. I think they are the same size as the side pieces came out to be the same size. I am sure it will work good for you.
I just would have problems putting my Large california car duster in there because it is bigger than 20 inches. That was why I built it without extra dividers. I am sure though it will work good for smaller items.
Divebmbr 12-10-2005, 01:51 AM Jaysplaypen,
Thanks for the design. I just finished making mine tonight and it looks and works great. Maybe if I have some time I will post some pics but they will look just like yours.
jaysplaypen 12-10-2005, 02:12 AM glad you apprechiated it.
Since I forgot about this thread. This divider does work perfectly in the crew Cab also, the Seat brakets seem to be bigger, so it fit just the same. The hump is a tad wider on the CC so that will have to be fixed, but It worked for this to. Good luck with yours. Take your time carpeting, that was the hardest part.
Galaxian 12-10-2005, 03:24 PM Reminds me of a box I built for my amps in a Bronco I used to have.

Nice job with the box Galaxian!
I was thinking of that kind of storage for the "over the hump of the wheel well in the Titan.
Something movable but securable.
Upright like yours
Latched.
Thanks for the idea!
btw: "Galaxian" as in video game of the 1980's? 8O
Fit2bTitan 12-14-2005, 05:27 PM jaysplaypen,
Great application. Brush off negative comments because I believe you got everyone's brain waves running. Everybody will have different modifications tailored to their need but your first run really looks good.
DESTRO 12-14-2005, 06:46 PM jaysplaypen,
Nice job and thank you. I saw this last night in my schools computer lab. Right away I knew this would have to go in my truck. I will however modify the design to go under the passenger side of the bench only. There is always a car seat in the middle and the drivers side bench is always folded up for groceries and toys. Good job and thanks again. If I come up with something good for the attachment I will keep everyone posted.

Help me out, goval. Profile view, rear dimension -- 2.5 + 0.75 + 3.0 = 6.25" while side view shows 6". Huh? Also, plan view, right side -- 8.0 + 8.0 = 16" while dimensioned at 15". Huh?
