I have been reading info. on here about Royal Purple and have heard other very positive claims about their products. I spent a good chunk of $$$ this week buying their fluids and today I had the front and rear differentials changed to their Max-Gear oil. I changed the motor to their 5W-30 and I had three quarts of their Max ATF fluid for the transfer case.

I was confident about the gear oils and motor oil, but I was not sure about the Max-ATF. I have read the Nissan Matic D is the same as Dexron III and this and others claim to be ok. I sent Royal Purple and e-mail last week, asking their advice on the product and also if they have an upcoming application for our transmissions (Matic J). I had not heard from them and today, I was having the fluids changed and at the last second, I chickened out on the Max-ATF for the transfer case. I am paranoid about my warranty. Anyway, when I got home, there was a response from Royal Purple. I have copied the response below. Thought this would be of interest/help to others. A side note on my experience... There was a lot of metal build up on the drain and fill plugs of both front and rear diffs. The rear was really bad. I only have 12570 miles and I had the dealer change the rear fluid at the 3750 service, since I had towed during the period. I had to show the service manager the recommendation in the owner's manual, as he said I didn't need to change it until 30,000. He said he never saw that and he owned an Armada. Sure gives me confidence in the service. Anyway, hope my diff(s) hold out and here is the Royal Purple response.

Bob,

MaticD ATF is stated to use in Continental USA. It also states if you live in Canada to run Nissan ATF, but right after that it states you could also use Dexron or Mercon fluid as an alternative. Our Max ATF will work great in your Titan's transfer case, but our Synchromax would be what we recommend for your transfer case that calls for an ATF type fluid. You will need 2.1 quarts or 3 bottles.

As for the Matic J- we are not recognized as a warranty compliant fluid, but Max ATF can be used after warranty. We have had great results with after warranty applications.

Have a great day.

Just saw (I think) royal purple in Sprawlmart for $5.79 a qt. Does it come in a purple bottle? Never used it, and don't know much about it.

Yes, it does come in a purple bottle and the fluids are purple. It is well known in the racing world and everything I have read has been positive. Just do a forum search for Royal Purple and there are several threads on it and other synthetics. Synthetics are definitely more $$$ to start with, but supposedly work out equal or better in the long run...with time between changes, fuel savings and less wear and heat. I will find out I guess.

I exchanged the Max-ATF for the Synchromax and had the transfer case changed today. Now everything is Royal Purple, with the exception of the transmission.

You really can't go wrong with any synthetic, but RP is definitely up there. Nissan needs to start getting some of these other fluids certified or I'm just going to start sueing them for not adhearing to the MM warranty act. It's a thousand times more complex than that, but the claim in the owner manual is very bold to say the least.

I believe someone mentioned already that Nissan had been sued over this, and Nissan won. Something about the fact that it is stated in the owner's manual, and you can read the manual before buying.

Find a company that wants to make a single specialized fluid that is used by one manufacturer and I'll show you a company with nothing better to do. Sorry my man but there really isn't a leg to stand on here.

On the topic howver Royal purple is an excellent product and Matic D is the same as DexronIII
