Warning: This can only be done with free-air subs or really low profile that require very little air space.

I finally built my under seat boxes. Luckily I already had free-air 10" subs. They are a nice fit, when tested tonight they look like recessed carpeted kick panels. I will not need to secure them, because they are the same size between the seat brackets. I still have to run all the wiring and mount the amp. Since I will be doing that in the garage after dark you will have to wait till tomorrow for finished pictures.
I used a half sheet of 3/4" MDF, so I spent $15.00 for the sheet of that, and 8.99 for the grey autozone carpet.

SWEET, Whats the Depth of those subs and the required air space?? would you mind posting the dimentions of the boxes? I'm currently using two IDQ10 10" Imange Dynamics Subs sitting under my rear seats. would be awesome to add 2 more..

okay here are some pictures from last night. Wanted to take some with the seats out, so excuse the flash, it makes the carpet colors seem farther off then they are. I did not have to cut any holes in the carpet, just used the cut-outs already there.

here is the amp, behind the rear seat, it fits perfect in a dip in the rear wall. I even found a place to run the wires up, without having to cut any carpet.

The subs I have are free-air so size of box is not a issue. I did have to come up with 4 3/4" of clearence from the lip of the sub to the base of the magnet. If trying this I would recommend something that needs a little less space, say 1/2" less. No problem with the size on the driver side, but the passenger size is pretty tight with all the air bag stuff under there. I am sure they built the drivers side with more space because of the option to put a sub there, and it needed it.

Also this would not be something you would want to do if you like real booming bass, as the small space under there does not give optimum condition for real booming bass. It does under normal listening conditions add a rich sound. So you could get away with just the one under the driver seat that has more room.

Last set of pictures, sorry for the multiple post, it only lets me put 4 pictures at a time.

But here is the finished boxes under the seat.

Cool, they look great. So how do they sound??

They actual sound pretty good for free-air speakers. They finish out the sound in the truck giving the bass that you just can get out of factory stuff. I would recommend them if you want to finish the sound, but if you play heavy rap or something with real heavy bass they are not the best soloution.

You know what, looking at your posts, I like your way of using the uneeded space to put stuff that would need space. That is a peferct uneeded space, but not for a sub. Well, but from reading your post, I guess you don't care about using the bass too much.
Very well planned though! I had no idea you could put something under those seats. Why don't you try putting acrylic covers for those subs, they need something on the bottom, if not you will be better off using speakers instead of the subs.
Very good thinking!

You did a good job! The box looks good under the seats.

Now, I would like to give you a little advise for choosing woofers. Regarding your quote above it's actually quite the opposite. "Free air" woofers are actually high "Q" woofers designed for infinite baffle (large box) systems. The term "free air" is misleading because it's actually made for large enclosures. A subwoofer in a true free air environment will produce very little bass due to cancellations of the front and back waves. Listen to the your woofer while holding it in your hand...no bass at all. Now if the "Free Air" woofer was mounted on a baffle like a rear deck of a car (back waves separated from front) it will produce good bass. I would suggest fully enclosing the box and stuffing it with polyfill (pillow stuffing). Your bass should tighten up and be "punchy". You will not get very, very deep bass with this set up, but it will be tight, snappy bass. Hope this helps!

I know its not like air tight but being that the open side is on the floor of the truck it is kinda closed. Right?

Yes it is, except for the ported sides. but you could do it without the porting and make it closed. It is very flat on the floor, so you could make them with no bottom and use the floor to close it, and not have wood taking needed space. Or you could use thinner wood on the bottom, since it sits flat on the floor.

And to be honest with you it sounds really good. I listen to rock and 80's rock(we have a all 80's rock station on the radio locally), and it has some bass, and it completes the sound of the music. I have the "gone in 60 seconds" soundtrack, and I will have to go play that for comparision as it has some pretty bassy songs on it and see how it sounds. If you are looking to coomplete the sound but not add heavy bass this is a good alternative to losing back seat storage space.

You know I thought I put it in there at the beginging, but I will have to go out and measure them when my husband gets back. He just had to drive my truck.

They look great! I am anxious to hear them!
I want to add a couple of amps and a sub and new speakers sometime soon and I only recently discovered (during the XM install) the small indentation behind the rear seat.

Jaysplaypen....

Curious about your amp location. I want to put mine behind the rear seat up against the back as well. Did you have to take the seat apart or did you just slide it up in there? Is it resting snug in there or is it screwed in?

Thanks....

Brian

I kind of drop it in from above by lower the back rest, and it fits nice and snug, Ther was no need for any additional holes to be drilled.

Okay so after some time I wanted to re-visit this installation. My first impression was not so good, but as I tweaked with the amp and the radio setting I have gotten really good sound out of this.

I have never been one to like hard hitting bass, but this does hit when you want it to. Mostly though I love the sound. With the seat above the speaker it elminates alot of the rattles, and vibration normally heard with small space subs. I have to say it was well worth it in the long run. My passengers are sometimes suprised by the vibration in the butts.
