i'd go 3-5k on full syn, but on Mobil 1 EP u can go 15k, but i wouldnt though. just my opinion.

I use Mobile1 synthetic with a 5K miles interval. The M1 Extended is good for 15K but not sure if the filter can handle that.

i think i will go w/ full synthetic for 5K miles. I will also change the oil after the first 1000 miles to get the metal shavings out. How long should I wait to switch to synthetic? should i ween it off of convential and run a synthetic blend for a little bit before i go to full synthetic??

Go full synthetic right off the bat. The only thing I've heard is that it's not a good idea to go back to conventional after you've switched to synthetic.

alright sounds good. After 1000-1500 miles, i'll change out the convential to get all the metal shavings out, then switch to synthetic. What do you think about Royal Purple? Do I need to run synthetic in anything else? Rear end? Tranny?

Manual says synthetic only in rear end. Tranny Nissan J-Matic ONLY or warrenty is void(although i believe amsoil has a matching trans fluid) Always break an engine i with Dino oil so that rings ceet 100%. I have heard nothing bad from anyone about royel purple, but i swear it is more slick than anything else. Although i tried it once on my silverado and engine siezed so im scared of it. if pistons sound sloppy go to thicker wt.

As for oil change intervals oil companies PUSH to do it sooner than needed so they can sell more oil. Synthetic i usually change at 5k cause i do it myself, but no problem to go over 7k. My parents had a BMW and they said to change every 5k, but when they brought it in for 1st yr free oil change they go.."oh oil is good for 15000 miles" i saw what they used standard Mobil 1 syn

So does it come w/ synthetic in the rear end? if so, then I won't bother. But does it even need to have it in the rear end? I do plan on lifting so, it might need the extra lubrication. I really don't know. I plan on keeping this truck for a long time, so I will change full synthetic every 5K.

OIL CHANGE TIP FOR EVERYBODY!!!
I have heard that when you put in your new oil filter, it is good to dab some of the old oil onto the new one, so that the new oil will flow through easily. And when you start it up, the engine won't have any oil for a second or two. that is of course if you care that much.

Ya it doesnt hurt but i usually forget. i changed my rear diff out @ 5k just because, and there was some metal shavings on magnetic drain bolt. Do it yourself dealer wanted to charge me for 4 qts oil and labor. I did it myself and it took 2 qts and basically a squirt of another bottle to do it. (with big tow gears not sure if different)

Is there a drain plug on the rear end? You don't have to take the gears out do you? How often should it be changed after the initial break-in to get the metal shavings out? Will I need to change it more often if I run 37" tires?

awesome. and my last question is...
How often does it need to be changed after the first 5000 miles? Since running 37s on stock gears will be harder on them, do i need to change it more often? What brand did you use? Is there a certain wt??

For peace of mind i also used some tephlon tape on drain plugs and no leaky. The oil is expensive i dont want to change it all the time!

What is tephlon tape? And how much does this oil cost?

Leadsled124

Look in Plumbing section of any store. little white tape not sticky. Oil is like $15 a qt? cant remember

etalian2005

When you look for the tape it will be called Teflon.
Not putting you down, Lead, just want to make the sealing tape easier to find for etalian.

So where do you put the oil in at ? so when you start it up the engine wont have any for a second or two ?????

You can pre-fill the engine oil filter. This is not as easy as it sounds. First of all you have to hit the hole of the filter so the oil goes in right. Next, you have to make sure you don't tip the filter so all your nice new oil doesn't come out. That's kind of hard to do since you have to turn the filter to about a 45 degree angle to put it on the oil filter socket (bad term, someone correct me please). Yes, get _some_ oil in the filter and smear a little on the gasket too. But you're not going to get the filter full. I get it about 1/3 full and consider it a good day.

I know that function, but the engine will not starve for oil during the time it takes the oil to start flowing thru the engine, and there is no way you can drain all the oil (in a normal oil change), unless you either let it sit overnight or flush your engine. he said just dab some on. oh well what do i know ive owned a nissan hardbody previously for 10 years.

ya i didnt think about that. the engine does still have oil since it hasn't all drained. thanks guys.
