: Idle Prob better but not ideal
rdawg06 05-12-2005, 01:52 PM Hi Guys ..well I did what you recommended. checked for leaks, tightened up the intake and cleaned the MAF sensor with contact cleaner( was no oil or dust on it though).
Anyway The prob was after it was warmed up the idle would hang out at about 600-700 rpms.. and after a few minutes of idleing it would drop to about 400-450 rpms and then jump right back up.
It is still doing it just at a less frequent rate now.. I also notice when the rpms were dropping thet the oil pressure seems to drop along with it..maybe this may help you guys determine what my problem is..I guess next step is to take it to dealer if we cant figure it out....Just got my new banks exhaust but I figure I want to resolve this first Before i install that.
Thanks for any help you can offer guys.
Ron
Redright9 05-12-2005, 02:06 PM Oil pressure will drop when the RPM's lower, also, when the RPM go up, so does oil pressure, thats normal..But the idle does need to be addressed..Honestly I would find out first if your dealer is ok with mods such as the cold air intake..If they arent, put the stock stuff on, then bring it in..I know that with the dealer I work at, if you had a problem, and the MAF was bad (it still may be) and my manager saw a cold air intake on, he would not let me warranty that part. So just an FYI for you. I would call and say you are "thinking" about a mod and what would that do to your warranty..
TheGoose 05-12-2005, 02:10 PM How much is a MAF Sensor anyway? maybe he can by a new one and plug it in himself?
TheGoose 05-12-2005, 02:19 PM redright9,
Do you have a prt number for the MAF Sensor?
Redright9 05-12-2005, 02:36 PM Well, the part number is 22680-7S000, but its not cheap...My parts department (with it's inflated pricing) shows a price of $512.60..So I would definately recomend going to the dealer and let them fix it with warranty..but just make sure about the cold air intake..I dont want them to deny a claim (like my tight a$$ boss) for that reason..
TheGoose 05-12-2005, 02:42 PM Thanks Redright9! Just tracked it down at Pinnacle Nissan online for $366 http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=searchCatalogOEM&siteid=49
Question... Is this a plug n' play item or will there have to be some special programming involed for installation. I'm guessing you will have to disconnect the battery or something?
rdawg06 05-12-2005, 02:42 PM I thought they could not deny warranty due to aftermarket parts, especially in this case wher the K&N intake clearly shows 50 state legal tag.
I just went out and took the whole thing apart again an made sure there were no air leaks or untightened screws..lol
I start it back up and it seemed to hold idle around 700rpms...ill let you know after I did a road test though..
Thanks guys
Ron
TheGoose 05-12-2005, 02:46 PM I probably wouldn't worry about it too much... If you are not getting any error codes, I wouldn't sweat it....
Redright9 05-12-2005, 02:55 PM I told you my parts department jacks up the prices!! Yes, its simple install, just plug it in..No programing needed..But, with aftermarket parts if they cause something to fail, it isnt covered by warranty..I have covered this in another post..But I would recomend finding out what your dealers stand is..Just because ist 50 state SMOG legal for emissions testing doesnt mean the manufactorer will fix something someone elses product broke. Like I have said, some managers I have worked for dont care, some do..And even at $300 or so bucks, thats alot to spend if you dont have to.
-and glad I can help!
Also, 'goose, even though no codes are set, a MAF can still be bad..I have seen it a few times..Just replaced two last week that had no codes, but other reading where off in the data stream......
TITAN57 05-12-2005, 03:09 PM I had the same problem on a Toyota. It was not the
mass air flow sensor but a sensor that just had to
do with controlling the idle speed. I can not be of
much help because I can not remember what the part
was called. Anyway the dealer replaced it & that
solved the problem.
Redright9 05-12-2005, 03:28 PM You are problably thinking about an idle air control valve....And yes, we dont know for sure that its the MAF that is at fault..Thats why I am thinking he should take it to the dealer if it wasnt something simple that he tried to check first.
rdawg06 05-12-2005, 04:14 PM Where would that be the air idle sensor?
Redright9 05-12-2005, 04:19 PM Titan doesnt have one..Its a "drive by wire" vehicle, the throttle is electronically controlled..so no "air bleed motor" to regulate air flow..
OldSalt 05-12-2005, 09:06 PM Hey Redright9, I don't mean to be confrontational about this, but a dealer cannot refuse to honor warranty work due to aftermarket parts unless the dealer can prove (and back it up in writing) that the aftermarket item caused the OEM part to fail. In the case of a MAF installed in a CAI system, the dealer would have to prove that the CAI caused the MAF to fail because of oil contamination or whatever. By federal law, the dealer cannot just state that the CAI caused the MAF to fail and then refuse a warranty repair. Reference the Magnuson-Moss act...the applicable section follows.
TITLE 16--COMMERCIAL PRACTICES
CHAPTER I--FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION
PART 700--INTERPRETATIONS OF MAGNUSON-MOSS WARRANTY ACT--Table of Contents
Sec. 700.10 Section 102(c).
(a) Section 102(c) prohibits tying arrangements that condition
coverage under a written warranty on the consumer's use of an article or
service identified by brand, trade, or corporate name unless that
article or service is provided without charge to the consumer.
(b) Under a limited warranty that provides only for replacement of
defective parts and no portion of labor charges, section 102(c)
prohibits a condition that the consumer use only service (labor)
identified by the warrantor to install the replacement parts. A
warrantor or his designated representative may not provide parts under
the warranty in a manner which impedes or precludes the choice by the
consumer of the person or business to perform necessary labor to install
such parts.
(c) No warrantor may condition the continued validity of a warranty
on the use of only authorized repair service and/or authorized
replacement parts for non-warranty service and maintenance. For example,
provisions such as, ``This warranty is void if service is performed by
anyone other than an authorized `ABC' dealer and all replacement parts
must be genuine `ABC' parts,'' and the like, are prohibited where the
service or parts are not covered by the warranty. These provisions
violate the Act in two ways. First, they violate the section 102 (c) ban against
tying arrangements. Second, such provisions are deceptive under section
110 of the Act, because a warrantor cannot, as a matter of law, avoid liability
under a written warranty where a defect is unrelated to the use by a
consumer of ``unauthorized'' articles or service. This does not preclude a warrantor
from expressly excluding liability for defects or damage caused by such
``unauthorized'' articles or service; nor does it preclude the warrantor
from denying liability where the warrantor can demonstrate that the
defect or damage was so caused.
Redright9 05-13-2005, 10:22 AM Yes, I know the law and I know my personal feelings...But I do know how dealers think (usually) also..I just want everyone to know whats going on..You are right we cannot refuse to perform warranty repairs..But I have seen MANY times a service manager saying that we are not going to repair something under warrnaty because he believes that an aftermarket part caused a failure..He/We then recomend the customer call Nissan, If they tell us go ahead, then we do the repairs, we sometimes send pictures of the "damege" to our reps...If Nissan calls back a part we replaced and denies the claim, the dealer pays for that repair..they dont like to pay anything out of thier own pocket...I just know that at some dealers I worked at, they didnt care..they would warranty parts that failed for what ever reason, just take care of the customer..I also have worked for some that are overly "by the book" and try to be all full of themselves and make a big deal over mods...So, I just want everyone to have the easiest time getting there vehicle worked on. Thats all. Just trying to make less trips to the dealer for everyone..I have seen managers push very hard with Nissan on some customers who have mods done and believe it caused a failure, to not pay a claim for warranty..I know there is some truth to the bad stereotype auto repair and dealers in general have..I dont fall in that category, But I have worked at places that do, so I am passing information on..And lastly, I know you arent trying to start any fights or anything...we are all here to help each other!
OldSalt 05-13-2005, 01:26 PM Hey buddy, as I said I am not trying to start an argument with ya. You sound like a person who actually cares about his customers, so I salute you for that. I was just throwing that out there so that others would know that they do have some recourse should a dealer flatly refuse to honor a warranty repair. I'm not bashing the good dealerships. It's the bad ones that we have to watch out for. Keep up the good work!
Redright9 05-13-2005, 02:58 PM OldSalt..
I know you arent start an argument and I appologize if I came off that way..We are all just trying to help each other and that is one of the reasons I have really come to love this site..I have checked a few others out and this one is by far the best..So not hard feelings at all!!
Redright9 05-16-2005, 07:09 PM Any update on the truck??
