Concealed Handgun - Texas - Vet Discount
Effective September 1, 2007, honorably discharged veterans will have to pay only 1/2 of the fees charged by Texas for a concealed Handgun License:
Under 60 years of age -
Initial Fee = $70 (1/2 of $140)
Renewal = $35 (1/2 of $70)
Over 60 years of age -
Initial Fee = $35 (1/2 of $70)
Renewal = $17.50 (1/2 of $35)
This means that veterans over 60 will pay less for renewal of their concealed handgun license than for their driver's license. Texans know what is most important.
September 1st is also when the castle doctrine goes into effect!

It's good to see Veterans getting a discount. The legislature is to be applauded.
By comparison, in WY, it is $79 for the permit and $50 to renew every 5 years.
In WY, a Veteran's DD214 would technically meet the 'training' requirement for the permit. Also, once the training requirement is met, it is good for life. There is no requirement for training in order to renew one's permit.
However, as NRA instructors, we believe it is important for people, including Veterans, to know the law, discuss scenarios and to have several hours of one on one range time with a handgun. Our 2 day NRA classes in Cheyenne, Basic Pistol and Home Firearm Safety(along with discussions led by fellow instructors who include local prosecutor,attorney and Sheriff's deputy) cost $35 total and are subsidized by our club. We are all volunteers.

Wyoming Rocks!!
I was working construction out of town a number of years back and everyday after work we hit the bar (good thing they didn't card me!). This was in a very small town by normal standards but a regular sized town for Wyoming. Just inside the door of the bar (one of two in town) there was a sign telling you to leave your guns at the door. No bouncer is there to pat you down. In the box under the sign are three guns. Two of them in old west style holsters.
Concealed hand guns? Forget that. In Wyoming they like to wear them on the outside so they can get at them faster.

Yes, Wyoming is a small town. 9th largest state in size, smallest population(about a half million).
In Wyoming, you are not supposed to carry in the part of the establishment which makes its primary revenue from the sale of alcoholic beverage. Plain speak, no guns in bars.
Open carry is allowed in most places you can carry concealed with a permit. Sometimes it makes visitors nervous. On the upside the presence of gun shops on the main street and people exercising their rtkaba, can serve to discourage Californicators from relocating here(with the exception of the Jackson area which by many Wyomingites is no longer considered a proper part of the Cowboy State). I sometimes open carry during breaks when teaching weekend classes. If any tourist felt uncomfortable, they could complain to the plain clothes Sheriff's deputy or prosecutor sitting next to me.
Also, in WY, you can conceal your handgun in your vehicle without a permit. Once you exit your vehicle with one concealed, you need a permit.
One of the reasons we moved to WY years ago was the fact that my wife, who likes to go exploring the back roads and attend classes in remote areas, didn't have to go defenseless even before she qualified for a permit. As she said, and I was never jealous, wherever she roamed she was always accompanied by her friends Horace & Dan.
Now, with her Concealed Firearm Permit, her Smith & Wesson 357 Snubby can be carried when she parks her Xterra as well, without exciting any tourists.
Around 2004, CO got a lot better. It used to be that if you drove through Denver and were caught with a concealed handgun in your car, you could be jailed and your vehicle impounded. Then the CO legislature took Denver to task for trying to create its own state within a state. Now, even my my wife and I can venture South without breaking the law.
if i wasnt a police officer in this great city of HOUSTON i would have a concealed handgun License. CRIME is out of control in HOUSTON................... thats y i live in the CITY OF K A T Y .....
