: E-85, anyone?

The 05 Titans are supposed to allow for the use of E-85 fuel (85% ethanol, 15% gas). With ethanol not taxed like gas, the cost per gallon here locally is about 30 cents a gallon less than gasohol (10% ethanol, 90% gas). Mileage with E-85 is supposed to be less, but I haven't seen how much less. Not have I heard anything about the difference in power. Does anyone have any experience with running E-85, so I can decide how hard to push my dealer for information on how to retrofit my 04?

no help with this topic, but welcome to the site. Where you from in the midwest?

Is it heaven? No, it's Iowa.

Lots of ethanol production going on here, so E-85 is fairly easy to find. If only I could burn it...

Don't bother...the cost of retro fitting is likely several times what you would save in the cost of fuel over the long run. And yes E-85 while less expensive will also net you a considerable decrease in mileage. The stoichrometric ratio of ethanol escapes me at the moment but that number is far less than gasoline...hence the lower mileage. E-85 is another of the Feds wonderful ideas to provide subsidies to farmers to grow corn for ethanol. Ethanol may lower certain emissions, but at the same time lowers your mileage causing a vehicle to use more fuel to travel the same distance. Most vehicles that use E-85 are fleet type vehicles. And for the companies that use them it makes sense fiscally to do so because of the associated tax breaks. Ever notice how much better your vehicle runs when it has "real live" gasoline in it?

Sam
p.s.
yes they make us use the same gasohol crap here in Denver.

Once you put alcohol in gasoline, water contamination
becomes a serious problem.

From what I've read on the forum in just the one day I have been a member, JetTech would be the guy to ask about this. He is a guru on our trucks(He is probably about to rip me a new one about a train of false logic I have come up with on tires and the weight of air; it's a theory I had and don't know if it is true or not). If I read the manual correctly (which I just raced through it, so I probably did not), it says the truck is already equiped to run both fuels. It used some terminology like Fuel Flexible Vehicle. If that is the case, and no retro fit is necessary, I would like to know more about where I can get this ethenol. Keep us posted.

I put on a lot of miles and was running strictly 91 octane from Phillips 66 as this seemed to get me the best mileage. Since then, I've tried the 10% gasahol (89 octane, also Phillips 66) and found I get almost identical mileage. What I did notice is a slight decrease in power, but not enough to make me pay the extra .15-.20. If I want to run at the local strip, I'll just plan ahead and use the premium for one tank, but in day-to-day driving, I get plenty of oomph from the gasahol.
