: 4wd will not disengage
glmilam1 05-31-2005, 02:30 PM My 04 Titan's 4wd will not disengage when I put the switch in 2wd until a sharp right or left hand turn is made. I have driven 20 miles or more before it disengages. I was told by service manager that Nissan Techs told him that this is normal on some trucks and they will not warranty any work done to correct it. Sounds like a cop out to avoid not replacing parts to fix it. I am going to call consumer affairs, but would like to know if anyone else has had this same problem, and what was done about it. I appreciate anyone's help on this.
Rossi 05-31-2005, 02:33 PM that sounds like a load of BS to me. I sure as heck wouldn't take that answer. You can always take it to another dealer.

My suggestion as well. I've not experienced anything like that, yet.
Keep us posted.
rvt223 06-01-2005, 07:47 PM My truck does/did the same thing this winter. I drove a few times with the indicator light flashing for approx 15 miles. I found that if I stop and reverse (about 10-15') it disengages immediately. I told the dealer about this and was told that it was probably some slush/ice build up effecting the linkage. Uh huh...dealers really don't know a damn thing in my experience. They will fix it when it breaks either the hard way, or the easy way(my way). Regardless have them look at it, and don't be afraid to be an ***...I mean be really assertive. Perhaps Nissan should have manual hubs and shifter for those of us who are not afraid to get out of the truck and turn the hubs in.
Regards,
Sam
RockyMtnTitan 06-01-2005, 08:32 PM Been down this road a couple times with the dealer. The first time in they gave me the same load of crapola they served you. The second time in they replaced the the 4WD relay switch (not the in-dash selector switch). This did help. The best way I've found to get it to disengage w/o having to pull over and back up, or make a turn or two, is this: When you want to switch back to 2WD, get the rpms up a bit to at least 3 or 4K (higher the better) then at the same time you let off the pedal (rapidly) switch the selector from 4H to 2H. Sounds crazy but works every time for me, and beats pulling over. On snowy roads, mine will engage/disengage normal w/o any manipulation.
complex 06-01-2005, 09:21 PM mine dont switch out either until several miles have been layed but i never worried abou tit because if it dont switch out soon, the old, stop, put it in reverse, go back about 10 feet, then put it in drive again has never failed me
mytmax98 06-05-2005, 06:58 AM I have an o1 xterra in a addition to my 05 titan. The xterra has the shift lever, but is shift on the fly. The info in the xterra tells you that it will not disengage until you go a few feet in the opposite direction. While I haven't seen this in any of the info in the Titan, I wonder if it is the same situation?
Yeti77 06-06-2005, 08:39 PM I still back up after. Probably force of habit of always backing up after disengaging. Did it in the Xterra and the Isuzu Trooper I had. Certainly wouldn't mind manual hubs. Hey Warn, make Titan manual hubs. :D
Peluche 06-06-2005, 09:55 PM I have had the same situation here. It usually disengages at the first turn, which is OK. I don't really worry about it. If it breaks, well... Nissan will fix!
Blue_Water_Rush 06-16-2005, 11:49 AM :punch: I remember when I had my 88 bronco, it was the push button transfer case switch, which I had to replace at one point to the tune of $700 and change. The hubs were auto locking. Anyway, I could shift in & out of 4H by just pressing that button. I think they made that feature just for women 'cause other models had the std. shifter. Now even though drive power to the axle was stopped when I pressed that switch back to 2H, the hubs would not unlock until I backed up about 10 ft. So the axle and driveshaft were still spinning, even though they weren't being driven from the tranny. Maybe this is a similar situation, but I could be wrong.

Hey that was not nice, I used to get out and lock my own hubs on a taco I had years ago. Maybe the on the fly for lazy beer bellied guys. Don't go atacking the other sex for changes. I am sure they really did it to sell to yuppies with too much money to spend, they pay for the one the fly 4WD and never even engage it. Most new vehicles have in dash 4WD, the standard floor shifter is a thing of the past.
Blue_Water_Rush 06-17-2005, 10:00 AM Sorry if I offended you. I did not mean that in a chauvanistic way, but women are allowed to be women, ya know. By the way, I like your ride. It looks a lot like mine. Question, did you buy your truck with the minimum of audio features in order to upgrade as you did? I was thinking of doing the same, but I opted for the Rockford 6 CD system instead. It sounds pretty darn good, powerful but not too obnoxious. Did you hear the system before deciding what to buy? I love the MP3 imput, as I have a lot of discs I ripped and burned, some with over 200 tracks on one disc, and I just plug in my sony personal CD/MP3 player, and I'm off.
Peace to you and yours, Ocean_boy4life
jaysplaypen 06-17-2005, 10:12 AM Mine has th popular package which has the 6 disk CD but no Rockford fosgate. I wanted the 6 disk, have never found a factory upgrade like RF that was worth the extra. The factory amp are usually weak. I have always bought the radio that did what I wanted and added to it to make it sound better. I learned a leason the hard way on my project car, that if the radio is not what I want, I end up changing every audio part in the car, to get it to sound right. Because factory speaker do not usaully sound good with after market decks. A story I am sure you are familiar with. So for this one I got what I wanted and made it better.
Blue_Water_Rush 06-17-2005, 02:31 PM You didn't answer my question. Did you hear the RF system prior to buying your truck? The speakers are not Nissan factory, they are Rockford Fosgate. There are 2 tweeters in the top of the dash, one center 2 way speaker in the dash, midrange speakers in the front doors, 2 way speakers in the rear doors, and an 8 inch sub box under driver's seat. I originally was going to just go with a std. cd/radio, and mod the 4 factory speakers and head unit with alpine, kenwood or infinity, but the RF system sounded surprisingly good, so I decided to give it a shot.
jaysplaypen 06-17-2005, 02:58 PM to be honest no I did not I picked out my truck onlne, and had the fleet manager have it ready when I got there. Two hours later I was driving away. I did not even look at another truck while I was there. I am a computer geek sometimes, and researched what I want very well before I put down the cash.
Blue_Water_Rush 06-17-2005, 03:26 PM with 496 posts on this site, wes i would agree you are a computer geek.
jaysplaypen 06-17-2005, 03:46 PM I am a geek, I will agree. The reason I did not get get the RF is it is500 dollars more for it, and I add a 300w amp, and 2 ten inch subs under the front seats way less than that, and I am sure it sound equal if not better. I have all the other speakers to change out if I wanted to and make it sound event better, but I have heard all the factory decks do not sound good on aftermarket speakers. I really do not want to change headunits, as I like the factory sleeper look, and blow them away when I crank it up. I am kind of that way, I like things to look stock, but not be. I find neat little ways to conceal things. Plus less bling of accessories less likely somebody will want them and steal them. You should see my project car. From the outside you would never know it is supercharged, and kicks *** in the sound department. And nobody has tried to steal it either. It looks like a mom car, so why would they want it. I see people all the time showing off there ****, and wonder why there cars get broken into.
I think I went off on a tangent. I hope I answered your questions, my mind is going a thousand miles a minute working on planning our get-together.
Blue_Water_Rush 06-18-2005, 10:54 AM Sleepers rule!!! How were you able to run the amp? Does the factory receiver have pre-outs?
jaysplaypen 06-18-2005, 10:27 PM Sleepers rule!!! How were you able to run the amp? Does the factory receiver have pre-outs?
No, no preouts. no remote power only. Had to just take power from other source, and tie into speakers. It would have been eaiser to change the HU, but I like the one I have. I have some pictures in the interior mod section. I did not snap any of the wiring in the dash, but I was able to run all wiring under carpet and suck. Never had to cut the carpet, I used factory cutouts to pop out of.
