: could not get oil filter off

i changed the oil in my titan for the first time last week and could not get the filter off for the life of me. i didnt have a filter wrench but i usually wrap a piece of sandpaper around the filter to help me grip, but it would not budge. I ran to kmart and bought a wrench, at 10 at night, and of course it was too big for the tiny filter on the truck. My neighbor let me use his floor jack and we cut a piece of thick flexible plastic tubing to fit in between the wrench and filter, finally got it off. I could not believe it was that tight. Has anyone else had that problem. Oh, and now I am running 7 quarts of sweet Mobil 1 witha mobil 1 filter.

They come tight from the factory, after that its a hand job

It takes a good wench to loosen tight nuts, er, oil filter. :) Yes, my oil filter was extremely tight. See this (http://www.clubtitan.org/forums/showpost.php?p=408107&postcount=37) post on the filter wrench I used.

I think every owner has complained about this issue.

Yeah, there is probably some guy at the factory that goes home every night with a big grin on his face knowing what a pain it will be to take off the oil filter.

Scewdriver thru the middle works very time. Big pipe wrench, etc. Save you from spending money for something you will only use once.

Curious about oil capacity, my owner's manual says 6.5 quarts with filter change.

Gona be around 7.

Filter should just be a hand job. Don't over torque

I have not done that old screw driver through the filter trick in years.

Tight factory installed oil filters may be a Nissan thing.
I watched the tech perform the first service on our '7 Xterra OR as I had read on an X site that it could be a pita especially with the skid plates. He said that other new Nissan trucks, SUVs and cars also have tight oil filters from the factory. After the first one he said DIY. We paid $24 for his demonstration and advice(which included free oil, filter, multi-point check and refreshments ;0), but no swearing or mess.

Not only did I have this problem but I also had EXTREMELY tight lug nuts. Not only from the factory, but also after my "brake judder fix". I even called my service department about it because I thought I had read the specs wrong or something.

If you think the filter was tight, wait till the first time you need to get the spare tire down.

I took my spare down a few months ago just to check the air pressure and to see how easy it was to drop. There were no problems encountered.

I use a giant pair of adjustable pliars as an oil filter wrench, and it works well with our stubborn oil filters.

My 07 wasn't 2 bad. Came off "normal". Maybe the gorilla that put your's on was off that day.

I think every owner has complained about this issue.

I've had the same experiences: oil filter & lug nuts were to tight after the dealer did the work, they don't touch my truck unless its absolutely necessary now.

get a strap wrench

it has many uses and can be adjusted for most sizes that filters come in

i also use it for water filter housings and my wife uses one ofr bottles, such as mayo and penut butter (when i am not here)

Factory and oil stop type places crank em down just so you wont wanna hassle it and will pay them. It should only be hand tight. I you ever are in a pinch and run into that situation again, you can always stab it with a flathead screwdriver and us that for leverage. It kinda messy but will work. the filters are thin metal and piece quite easily

I switch mine to the K&N filter with the 1 inch nut on the end so I never have that problem again.

I just did my oil change on my Titan today for the first time cuz for the past year the dealership did it since they had this promotion for free oil changes for one year. I guess the techs didn't force it on cuz it was pretty easy to loosen up. The drain plug was a bit tight but just took a good tug. I think I did it all in about 15min. Only thing was I didn't know the oil was gonna squirt out like that so I had a 10min cleaning job, lol. Stupid me, I should of know better to lay cardboard under the truck after doin' so many oil changes on my first car.

I've changed my oil a hand full of times and the last time I just couldn't get the filter off and I didn't want to do the screwdriver through the filter trick so I just called it a night and the next day i went to a motorcycle shop and got a filter wrench (cap style) for a Honda Goldwing and that fit perfectly over the filter. I had no problem getting it off with the cap and a breaker bar.
