: VK56 transplant?
Kobi B 11-30-2007, 11:59 AM Hey there guys. I now have a 73 Camaro chilling in my garage and slowly being taken apart and put back together. From the title I know you guessed it. I have been thinking about putting a VK56 into the old camaro.
First, what do you guys think of that? I would like to see what the VK56 can do pulling a lot less lbs.
Second, though i admit i have not really looked that much, does anyone know a place to source one?
KINGMADE 11-30-2007, 12:11 PM Hope you have alot of time and money. It would be awesome to see, but alot of hurdles to get over. First off would be getting a stand alone ecu to run it.
RBsTitan 11-30-2007, 12:18 PM how serious are you about doing this...I'm sure you know that many mods/shops are not at your disposal as are in GM world.
However I think the idea is cool and it should fit and run well. A stand alone ECU will be needed for sure. Take a look at the Chris Fosberg 350Z.
Are you going manual? I'd sugguest doing so.
I had seen this thread (linked below) on ClubFrontier.org that someone had installed a VK56 in an xTerra. I'm guessing that there might be a thread about it on an xTerra forum somewhere that might help enlighten some of the hurdles that you'll need to overcome.

Kobi B 11-30-2007, 12:53 PM manual would be nice but i'm unsure of the tranny that would fit the VK56. A stand a lone isnt too much of a problem just some work and $$$.
Some of the troubles that people have on newer cars i wont have to face because there isnt anything electric on this old Camaro. And aftermarket fuse boxes are easy to get. Also the dash is being replaced with all after market guages. So getting all those to work on the engine and tranny will be less of a pain then try'n to match up 34 year old chevy guages with a 2004 nissan set up.
Right now its all just ideas i am tossing around and i dont see why it would be any harder then dropping in a new LS1 or some other chevy engine that runs EFI. It's all going to have to be run by a computer.
Then again there is always taking the easy way out and building up a Chevy 8.1L V8 and throwing on duel 4br carbs and calling it a day. 600 NA horse power is a tempting sound.
KINGMADE 11-30-2007, 01:08 PM yeah but that has been done, probably hundreds of times.... you would be the first to drop a vk56 into a camaro :D which would be really cool.
shinermiller 11-30-2007, 01:09 PM anything is possible! If they can put the titan eng/trans in an old land cruiser, theres no reason you cannot put it in a camaro. it would probably be a lot easier. I do know (if i could find the link) they pulled all assemblies that were used to control the eng/trans.
scottsbro23 11-30-2007, 02:18 PM This idea as crossed my mind as well ...VK56 in a 66' Chevy C10..lol Or possibly using a shortened Titan Chassis and driveline...But I don't have the financial support to do it..lol Plus the C10 is still back home in Alabama..Uncle has it in his barn....waiting on my check...lol
Kobi B 11-30-2007, 02:59 PM Right now there are 4 VK56 for sale here in Las Vegas. Loke to be about an average of 2K.
Anyone know a manual tranny the VK fits? i may be wrong but i thought all titan and Armadas come auto trans only.
right now i am in the middle of making the car pretty first before i move on to engine, I'm planning ahead. :)
Oh and because this is a hot rod... whos got the highest HP VK?
shinermiller 11-30-2007, 03:03 PM Anyone know a manual tranny the VK fits?
350z manny tranny w/ a JWT adapter... or at least if/when they release it. i dont know if they have or not
HRTKD 11-30-2007, 03:09 PM Here (http://www.clubtitan.org/forums/showthread.php?t=34069) is a thread you might want to check out.
54warrior 11-30-2007, 03:26 PM I want to see a chopped up Titan, with a shortened frame, reg. cab, shortbed!!!
Kobi B 11-30-2007, 03:47 PM That would be cool. So they are working on one eh? I bet a 560Z would be a rocket. I know there are turbo Zs running around but the TQ from the VK56 is awesome. I'll look into it.
What about turbo kits? I know there are a few twin turbo systems for LS1s but what about our VK56?
Not turbos yet, just Stillen and Vortech Superchargers. This is the closest I've seen to a Turbo:

Keep in mind that you'll have to have a worthy Tranny and Rear Diff to support that kind of boost. Personally, I like the Armada Rear Diff better than the Titan's if you don't mind going with an Ind Rear Susp or migrating it into a Solid Axle. You probably have much better options avail to you though too.
Kobi B 11-30-2007, 04:27 PM I am planning on using the rearend out of an LS1 camaro/firebird with a 4link set up.
RBsTitan 11-30-2007, 04:52 PM I heard that a turbo 400 went into the VK and that PCS controller controlled the shifts. Not sure how reliable it was but the racing offroad guys I think were doing this that way.
Also the manual Z tranny has been fitted to the VK56. I go manual. Check out Hybridz.com as well and see what that may bring.
So far the HP at wheels on a NA VK56 is around 330 owner Tomnymods and that truck runs 13.86 and weights 5100lbs.
My truck as it sits today runs 14.34 NA 5335lbs and with 80shot runs 13.32 both in full street trim.
1 off forged Hbeam Rods and pistons will run ya around 4K parts only. That way you can get a S/C and up tht HP to 600. Or just buy a menards race motor.
