: Traction without DR's or TruTrac?

Rossi and others, is it possible to get a good launch with the tailgate and spare removed without having Trutrac or DRs? I want to shed as much weight as possible, but I know there will be traction issues. Tailgate and spare are about 150# and that means over a tenth saved if I can launch. I ran into some problems launching with the spare removed, but the tailgate left on. I was able to compensate with that. Now I want to remove both items and run with about 8 gallons of gas in the tank. The track prep is excellent where I run. My best 1/4 mile time was with the spare and tailgate on and a 1/2 tank of gas. Thanks!

Sudden I pulled mainly 2.1's on street tires with them items off.

This was before tune...be harder now. If the track prep is good a small burn out to make sure no water is on the tires....then launch.

It may take a time or two to see if you can go WOT off the line or roll into it....just depends on the track.

But I've done it...and I've failed at it too...LoL

Same here 2.1's without TT or DR's ,stock tires, no Elocker either, with the gate and spare still on the truck. Play with the tire pressure, my best 60' were at 22psi, start at 30psi and drop it 1-2bls every lap until you hook up. Just do not go below 15psi unless you have some way to fill them up before you leave the track. Keep your lauch the same every pass, pick a launch RPM and stay there until you hook up then you can play with the launch RPM.

I drove my one wheel peel titan at the track more than 15+ times, with my spare and tailgate off. Never once did i get a good launch. I either looked like a grocery getter off the line or i spin through second. Mine where XE tires so they are alot cheaper and thinner than the tires that come on se and le models i do believe.

I am 4WD and I run with the spare off. Usually half of tank in the gas, with the tailgate on, and I average 2.1s. I've only gotten one 2.0 60'.

There is a fine line of what you can get away with on the pegleg. I know I can run without the spare, but deduct another 75# for the tailgate and that might put me over the edge. I leave everything at home, so I can only add gas weight if I'm too light on the rear, but adding weight to the tank won't help much with the right rear tire traction.

And the right rear is the one that goes.... but again my XE tires suck, and the track i was running at, at the time, sucked as well. Plus I had to go through the water.

Yeah, I don't think i could run without my tailgate on. I sometimes slip without the spare, and now my right tire tread is almost bald! I call it my mini slick, lol.

I was thrilled to be running consistent 2.09 60's on my Pizza cutters with TT so I can't imagine getting that 60' with less wt to stick her to the track. I'm not sure what my best launch on one snow tire would be but with 2 hooking it was a 2.03 but I never took off wt either, good luck man.

Any of you guys change spring rates or anything up front to increase/decrease weight on the rear end??? Anyone ever had their truck on a set of scales?

I meant a set of four scales, so that you can see how much weight is on each corner. Left/Right percentages, front/back percentages, etc...

I ran stock SE tires.

No Spare

No Tailgate

Here are my slips from 10/25/06 on this truck with exhaust and true flow intake.

60' 2.181 1/4 mile 14.999 @ 92.521
60' 2.169 1/4 15.017 @ 91.957
60' 2.183 1/4 15.028 @ 92.574
60' 2.187 1/4 14.974 @ 92.622

So pulling 2.1's isn't too hard with stock tires and no true trac.

A couple months later with Injen CAI:

2.130 14.840 @ 92.302
2.112 14.739 @ 92.236
2.148 14.812 @ 92.077

The problem is to pull 2.09's on skinny AT tires with cams and all and run a 14.22 consistantly get's trickier. That's why I was so thrilled with my last track outing, predictable launches at near wide open throttle were very cool and I got three in a row so it was sweet.

Here's what I will try in April. I'll leave the tailgate at home and make the first two runs with the spare on, then drop the spare (chain it to a pole somewhere at the track) and then make another two runs. As Rossi posted earlier, it will be a hit and miss type thing depending on track conditions that day. I want a 14.6, so I can say it can be done with mods totaling under $750. I can't help it, I'm a cheap SOB...lol. Guys, thanks for the input!

I did it w/o a spare but i left the tailgate on. Dont heatup the tires very much just spin to clean them off. Ive learned H rated and lower tires harden when they heat up. Track prep will determine the rest.

No one's tried this?? I don't know anything about drag racing and have never been to a drag race. My experiences in other racing realms has taught me that knowing such data, and more importantly, being able to adjust/control it is very beneficial. I can't see it being much different in this application.

And have you tried tire softeners?

No hard enough to find a place to let me weigh the whole thing!! Only thing i did to distribute wt is remove the front swaybar. Rear end dumps a bit more.... hehe...dumps

I'll be heading out to the track this weekend. I'm hoping that it won't be canceled due to rain. I want to see what, if any, improvement these traction springs will produce at the track. Sure wish I could find a place to get my timing advanced in the DFW area before then.

Texas Motorplex in Ennis. Wanna meet up there? Don't bother calling, they never answer. The track is about 15 mins from my house so I'll head out that way to make sure they are open. Then start letting people know they are open. Get there early. Sucks to get there and manage a handful of runs after hours and hours of waiting.
