: Finally Installed the Carbotech Pads

Due to peer pressure, I got on the ball and installed my "fairly won" carbotech brake pads today. It took all of one hour to do, 10 minutes to change the pads and 50 minutes to clean the wheels inside and out. It was very straight forward and very easy to do. I have pictures and instructions on my pixagogo link at the bottom. There were too many pics to attach to this message so just click on the pixagogo link at the bottom, then click on "Nissan Titan Crew Cab 4x4". There you'll see all the pics and instructions on how to change your pads whether you use carbotechs or factory.

I will run them for several weeks and report back on they are doing!!

The pads are $90 for the front set. Our initial testing has shown a 10' decrease in stopping distance from 60 mph. I also have the stainless/Kevlar lines @ $160/set, and $20/qt for synthetic brake fluid as well. The full writeup should be in www.NissanPerformanceMag.com next month.

Well the first 50 miles were very nice with the carbotech pads. Still zero brake dust on the fronts with some starting to show already on the rears. Braking is exceptional so far, I didn't get a chance to get them too hot but slowing down from highway speeds was noticeably quicker. They don't squeel or make any noise so far....BIG PLUS!!

The only draw back I see so far is carbotech doesn't have any for the rear....Get on them Greg!!!

Truthfully, we're still testing them. If they add to the improvement, count on them being produced. If they only help with dusting and don't make a difference, then that's a tougher decision. I'm glad you like the fronts. PLease pass the word, I need to get these moving so I can continue these projects! :D

Greg, maybe you could consider sending me some of the rears and I'll do some real world testing on them. Even if all they do is cut down on the brake dust I've got a feeling they will still be a big hit. Please make them!!!

I appreciate that. But when the pads are prototyped they are hand made. We already have the set in testing, and he has my test equipment. Hopefully the testing will be wrapped up for next month's NissanPerformanceMag.com's December issue.

Hi Cal, that's an excellent article and spot on with the comments. I've got 1300 miles on the carbotechs at this time and positively love them. Here's a quick story just to show you what they are capable of.

Thanksgiving evening my wife and I had just settled into a cabin in the North GA mountains for the weekend. I needed to make a quick run to the store to get a few items we had forgotten. Right after I pulled out of the store parking lot, heading back to the cabin, a mid 90's 300zx decides he wants to play, and play hard we did the whole 12 miles back to the entrance of the cabin. At about 105mph I see the sign for the turnoff to the dirt rd. the cabin is off from, so I jammed the brake pedal to the floor just to see how the carbos would do. The ABS was pumping like crazy but I was able to come to a complete stop with zero fade or smoke with my eyeballs barely in their sockets...

After giving that 300zx a major run for his money, of which I was able to gain on him going uphills!!!, I pulled off the highway, threw her in 4 wheel drive, and crept back up to the cabin. Now that's versatility folks....

Back to the carbos......No rotor warpage, no matter how hot I get them and nice sure footed stopping. Dust only appears after it rains and it's more dirt than dust. What more can I say?? They are AWESOME!!!

I dont have problem with dust on the back just the front. your front breaks do 80% of the stopping with your back only being used to slow you down a little, especially when you slam on your breaks al the weight transfers to the front. back would only be good for cutting down dust, but its nice to do them all around.

Just curious why this is. Why wouldn't you want more stopping power in the rear. (of the truck I mean for you pervs)

M4ckFirst of all, ROFLMAO about the perv comment. As for the rear brakes, I would guess additional stopping power wouldn't ever be used in most situations, if anything, more effective pads on the rear would only extend the change interval for the pads. Even the ABS on the rear brakes is designed principally for directional stability during braking. Then again, if you drive in reverse all the time...

12-09-2004, 08:33 AM
It's not that you don't want more braking power on the rear, it's a matter of how much weight is on each axle. More weight is on the front than the rear. And when you make a hard stop weight transfer puts much more weight on the front. If you had equal braking on the front and rear the rear would lockup every time you made a moderate to hard stop. The rear brakes are always smaller than the fronts; look at the size of the rotors. The brake system han a valve that controls pressure to the front and rear to help prevent rear lockup, as well as VDC and ABS.

SMOKEDYA2

on most cars and trucks you do 2 or 3 front break jobs to every one back break job. cutting down dust and prolonged life is a good thing though

Hey Greg, I think I'm going to have to get some of those SS brake lines. I used to run them on my mustangs along with SS caliper bushings and they made a huge difference in pedal feel and stopping power. Thanks for making them available along with the brake fluid. I've never used the Motul but have heard excellent things about it. I'll have to give that stuff a try too.

12 + people intersted, we will do the pads for $75 per set. But you need to get 12 confirmed before they go at that price. The brake lines, if you are buying the pads, are $145/set. If you are NOT buying pads, but want the lines, they are $160/set. These are still very strong deals. Please get a list together, and then forward it to me. The list of buyers should include the following info:

2500 Mile update!!

Well everyone, I hate to say this but.........woooooohooooooo, I still love them!!!

They have settled in now after 2500 miles to an all around awesome brake pad set. Still no dust to speak of, no squeal, excellent hot and cold braking, and did I mention no dust...

I can't thank GregV enough for making these available to everyone, especially at the group buy price he's doing. If you haven't crossed over into the buying stage yet please do so because I'm sure you'll be as happy as I am with them, even if for no other reason then to keep your wheels nice and clean.

Now for the rear brake set???? I can't WAIT!!! Sign me up....

Hey Jet, are you still keeping your lugs torqued to 85lbs? I'm going in for the brake tsb in about a week or so, and dealer ordered new rotors as well. The service writer told me they are a newer designed rotor as well as pads, but I will still probably put the Carbotechs on and retorque wheels to 85lbs after I leave the dealer. This was the first I've heard of the rotor replacements being a newer design.....maybe he's pullin my leg.

Get this, he told me they wouldn't install the Carbotech pads for me cause anything other than Nissan pads will void my brake warranty!! Is that a load or what?? I told him these are rotor-friendly composites, but didn't matter. I hate when these guys threaten ya with the warranty loss crap when you modify your vehicle for the better. Maybe with the newer rotors/pads I won't have anymore brake issues....who knows. Guess I'll know in another 3K or so.

Thanks, man.
Steve

JetTech

Hi Steve, yes I still torque my wheels to 85. Seems to be a proven way to reduce the amount of warpage. Some have had good luck with it and some have not. I would guess it has a lot to do with how badly the rotors are warped when they lowered the torque initially.

SMOKEDYA2
01-02-2005, 10:44 PM
talked to my dad about the warping thing with retighting the lugs to 85 lbs. the answer he gave me is; there are 3 ways to warp rotors 1 to much heat, 2 poor metal quality used on rotor, and 3 improper lug tighting not the foot lbs it is set at nessacaraly, but when someone doesnt have a torque wrench and will tighten one lug to say 60 lbs and another one next to it to 150 lbs and that is what will cause warping. i tried to back up your theory on the 85 lbs and he said almost all manufacture recomendations are set to around 100-120 ft.lbs and they might be improperly set from factory and suggested checking that first.
ive got 6890 miles on my truck with no warping and the lugs set to 97 ft.lbs. but there all evenly set.

For some reason the link to group buy on pads and lines lead me to a missing disscussion so didn't get in on the group buy earlier.

Month wait on the pads.
Oh well. A fellow member got them quicker so no big loss.
Greg still gave me the $75 + $145 price.

Greg sounds like a good guy on the phone.

Do most people do the installation themselves?
Or take it to a shop?

Guess I should take it to a shop since nissanperformancemag.com recommends turning the rotors.
But the break lines... I'd hate to do it wrong and have it bust or something.

And what kind of fluid do most people recommend? Maybe something affordable? Especially if you don't tow?

Thanks Greg, I'm looking forward to braking more confidently after I install the pads and SS lines. Still have to wait until my Titan comes back from the body shop.

Got my Carbotech pads and Crown Performance brake lines from Mossy today. Nicely packed with a cool T-shirt and Nissan calendar thrown in the package too! Thanks GregV. I hope to get my Titan back from the body shop on Wednesday and will get on this install some time this weekend (putting on the Flowmaster exhaust too). 8)
