: No Brake Harness Wiring

A few months ago I checked under the dash and found what I thought to be a plug for the wiring harness adaptor.

I bought the brake controller, went to the dealer, he gave me a harness jumper. I wired the jumper and brake controller and went out today to hook them up.

The plug I originally found under the dash isn't a match. I found one that looks close on the side to the left of the emergency brake, but it doesn't fit.

Evidently Jet Tech was right and the XE's are not pre-wired for the controller :(

This Sucks.

Yeah that does suck.

Maybe a stupid question, but what is a brake controller and what does it do? If it's some useful I might look into it. :D

Controls the brakes on a trailer if the trailer comes equipped with brakes. Or anything else with brakes.

Thanks, Guess I don't need it as I never tow anything bigger than two jetski.

and it will only help if the item being towed has electric brakes. Most jetski trailers do not.

I still don't get it.

My manual says there is a jumper harness. I found none and had my dealer give me one.

My manual says there is a plug for the jumper, I looked and thought I found one, I didn't rip it down and untape it until today when I was going to wire the controller. It turned out that wasn't the plug I need, again I found none.

My trailer wiring at the factory is a 7 pin, 7 wire. It was plugged under my bumper and DOES have 7 wires. It goes up into the frame, that's as far as I've traced it. Where do these 7 wires go, do they just stop?

Things just don't seem to make sense here and my manual is contradicting what I'm finding. It doesn't have disclaimers for the XE or for non Big Tow packages. It simply contradicts what is.

I can't tell you how pissed I was when I couldn't find the right plug today.

Tomorrow I'll have my manual and will call the dealer from work. They are going to have to work with me on this one. Hopefully I'm just blind and not finding it, otherwise they will wire it when it goes in for a tire change, oil change, brake judder, inspection, this week.

I have a trip to get ready for and these unplanned sidesteps get me ticked. When it already seems like there isn't enough time to go around these situations irritate me.

Just venting, but I have a feeling it will work out. I just had my hopes on knocking this one off TODAY!!!

Thanks for letting me haul off a little guys/gals.
I DO feel better

Chief, have you seen this picture from Jet Tech? It shows where the plug is, if you have it. The 04 XE did not have it. Also you don't get the pigtail for the controller unless you bought the Big Tow package. If you did the controller pigtail came in the glove box. You will also have to add the two relays if you don't have the BT.

Hey Baseballfanz, just a few pics. The first one is the controller. Internally it senses stopping motion and applies the brakes harder as the g forces increase. There is a sensitivity adjustment on the controller. On the left is a readout for errors and braking percentages from 5 to 99 percent. On the right is a manual slide that can is an override for the automatic braking function. Usually mounts on the lower dash.

The second pic is the factory harness jumper plug (white) that is supposed to attach to a female plug under the dash (the one I can't find). The black plug goes into the back of the controller. Center are the yellow crimps I used to connect the 2 harnesses.

Hope That Helped. :D :D :D

Thanks a ton SCR. I'll take one more looky before I go any furthur. From the pic it looks like the plug should be pretty obvious it it is there.

I got the relays when I bought the hitch and they are installed.

Much Appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

There is a tag on the plug identifying it as the controller harness. You can see it in the picture. Mine had it also. My plug was taped to a harness just to the left of the steering column.

Thanks Again SCR.

I went out and looked again. Amazing how much brighter everything is under there once it gets dark.

Anyway there is nothing there like you described or like what is in the pic. shoot time to re-group!!!!!!

Chief, others have installed the controller without the factory plug. You just have to find the correct wires. I don't know if you have a wiring diagram. If you don't these may help:

My 05 XE has the harness. It was wrapped way up in there by the emer brake. took a few minutes to find it, but stupid me forgot I needed the controller box:) good thing I am only hauling a dual jetskit trailer for now.

Thanks SCR. I called the dealer today and asked the service manager where all the wires from the hitch went since I couldn't find the plug where it's supposed to be.

He said sometimes it's on the right side if the steering column  but just bring it in and they'll take care of it. Now my curiosity is getting the best of me. I'll have to take a good look at your pics.

I drop it off in a week. Oil Change, Tire rotation, power steering noise, Inspection, controller wiring, they put me in line for the new brake kit (Yea I'm not holding my breath on that one)

A friend of mine thinks there may be a plug in one of the engine compartment fuseboxes. It just blows my mind that there would be all the wires but no plug. I'm again gonna have a look.

Thanks SCR,

Chief

Hope you get it going, Chief. Maybe the dealer can find the plug, but I still think 04 XEs didn't have it. The wires went from the relay box to the connector at the firewall, but didn't go inside. The 05 XE has the plug. Same with the fog light plugs - not on 04 but on 05 XEs.

Thanks for your patience SCR. Seems like you are pretty certain that there is no plug. I looked in the engine compartment today and found nothing.

Well if the wires go to the connector on the firewall, it may be possible to get the part of the harness that connects from there to the inside??? I will instruct the dealer that if this is the case, I want the harness run inside. They are pretty good at dodging, but I'll give it my best shot :D :D :D

Again my best argument is what the manual states. If they can show me liturature I recieved with the truck that says otherwise, then I'm gonna have to buckle down. If not, Nissan should make good on their written word. I want the connector in there, not a bunch of wires all over the place.

Now that just plain s*ck! I was planning on taking a trip to NJ and bringing back a Uhaul trailer with some furniture. Do I need this? I added a hitch, but haven't used yet. I was planning on buying the controler this week.

Hey govalacb,

Looks like you have just about the same truck as me by the badging. (EXTREMELY SHARP BTW :D NO BULL)

Last I heard, it ends at the firewall but I need someone to show me I think.

Get to your dealer as soon as you can and I think they may be the best help. Maybe they could get the remainder of the harness.

A lot of U-HAUL dealers will install the controller and stock it, but it should cost about twice as much and with no harness, they'll just find the right wires and tap into them. Plus the install time.

Also, I've towed 2500 pounds with lighter trucks than the Titan, but I really don't recommend it. Kinda hairy. You could lie and tell them you have the controller but then again not the most prudent thinking. The trailer would probably weigh more then enough to need brakes, especially if it's enoclosed.

I feel your pain bro', rock on.

Thanks for the PIC scr38! I looked my brake controller for ten minutes. I searched the web and found you guys. I poped off the drivers side bottom dash and to my surprise I found the conector on my new 2005 XE crew cab titan. I bought a brake controller, one of the needed relays and a 4/7 rear plug at advance auto $100. I bought the 2nd relay and brake controller plug at my Nissan dealer $50. I orded a cat 4 reciever hitch at AutoAccessories4Less.com $150 shipped.

I am towing with a class 4 and brakes for about $300 I saved $3000 not getting the heavy toe. I pull about 6500 without a problem.

Thanks for telling us about your XE having the brake controller connector. The 04 XE's didn't and you just confirmed the 05 XE's do!!! Excellent information!!
