I was getting tired of shredding steel wool and Scotch-Brite pads, and scrubbing in vain with a scrub brush and Comet trying to keep these letters clean. It seemed the problem was the coarse texture in the rubber caused by whatever GoodYear used to sand off the black rubber to expose the white during manufacturing holding tons of dirt.
So I took some 3M 180 wet sandpaper and sanded the letters with some water. You can see the water turning white as you sand the coarse texture and dirt off. Your letters will be whiter than they ever were, and another bonus is the frayed black edges come off cleanly too.
I'm sure the new, smoother surface of the white letters will stay clean longer and be much easier to keep clean from now on.
Give it a try. It'll take an hour and one sheet of paper. I rip it into sixths and then fold each sixth in thirds.
