: Transmission mount replacement

I started noticing that when I would accelerate quickly, I got a knocking noise/feeling in the floor of the truck and determined it was the transmission mount that was torn and causing the noise. I figured I would just replace the universal joints while I was under there just in case and I also am installing a driveshaft spacer. We had so many tools laying out and were trying to get done ahead of the rain, that I didn't have time to make note of the sizes on the sockets so if I am mistaken on any of them please feel free to correct me. It really helps to have two people also.

I used the driveshaft spacer purchased from Greg with PRG for about 69 bucks.

I got my transmission mount from the dealer for about 90 dollars. They listed it as Insulator-Engine part# 11320-7S100.

I got the two universal joints from autozone with a lifetime warranty for around 33 dollars for both. Part# 1-0153DG for the front and part#2-0053DG for the back.

Tools:
air and regular wrachet
impact driver
wrenches
small block of wood
small sledge hammer
deep well sockets

The transmission mounts on a 4wd are hard to see if they are bad but if you jack up the transmission a little and look you should be able to see if the rubber is torn. I tried to repair it with hand tools but the bolts are really tough to get out so air tools are a must. WD-40 on everything really helps also.
Make sure you are on level ground and you will need to jack the transmission up just a little and make sure to have plenty of support for it while you are working.

There are three bolts in the middle of the crossmember directly under the transmission mount. If I remember correctly I used a 17mm socket to get them off.

Next there are two bolts at both ends of the crossmember and those took a 17mm socket also. The crossmember is in there really tight and I used a big hammer and just kept tapping down on it to get it out.

Next there are two bolts holding the mount to the transmission and again it was a size 17mm socket to get those off and then you can simply replace the mount and rebolt everything back up.

Next thing is to remove the driveshaft but before you do, make sure that you put something under the wheels so the truck can't move. There are four bolts hold the driveshaft in at the back end. I am pretty sure they were also 17mm. You won't have room to get a socket on them but just use two wrenchs after you spray them a little and they will come loose easily. I put a block of wood against the driveshaft at the back and tapped it forward and it will just fall down and you can pull it toward the back of the truck to slide it out of the transmission.

It will lose a little bit of fluid and the truck will move if you don't have it blocked. Don't let it hit the ground. Now I was going to replace the universal joints but when I got the driveshaft out the U-joints were fine and I decided not to but here are a few pics showing how to get them out anyway. You have to remove the 4 clips and then the U-joints will have to be beat out. Keep in mind that they are very hard to get out and when you put the new ones in, don't let the caps come off and just put the new clips back in.

The next thing is to put the driveshaft back into the transmission and put the new spacer on the end of the driveshaft and use the new bolts and bolt it back up to the truck.

Great write up man. I was just thinking of my transmission mount today as it seemed really rough when I had to shift and when I got on it a little. So I guess I will get under there and take a look

Great POST!! I was wondering if it was possible to replace the mount with out removing the crossmember...but now that I see how long the bolts are on the mount, I see you have to remove it.

I have a cracked mount too, but since I installed my traction bars the tranny doesnt hit the bottom of the cab anymore....still going to replace the mount though.

Hey has anyone else done the spacer yet and romped on it to see if it still did the same thing, is the spacer putting the pinion angle back and backlash is less, i read followed post, but no answer why.
