im guessing this is the right forum...

im just curious what you guys have in your truck as far as aftermarket security systems like viper, cliffort, compustar, or any other system.

the reason i ask is im looking to get the viper 791xv but would like to hear some recommenations about other alarms that you use if any. maybe something better, who knows.

lets hear it guys...

I've got the viper 791xv in mine and no probs yet. My only complaint is that the alarm only comes with one LCD remote and it eats batteries up.

Ya I'm using a non-lcd remote which lasts longer.

I want to go down this road soon to protect my investment. How much for that Viper and where did you get it installed? Clifford is supposed to make good stuff...but I think they're all owned by the same folks...DEI or something like that. Thanks...

Your right. DEI owns almost all of the major security system brands. I had the alarm yanked from an old truck and into my Titan so I believe it originally cost me around $500. Its well worth the features (i.e. Auto door locks, auto dome light supervision, shock sensor, etc...)

i got my viper alarm from best buy and the price includes the install. it was $500.

but from what i hear about best buy im thinking of taking it back and going to a shop that deals in alarms/stereos.

i think the clifford is a little cheaper but im not quite sure.

Another piece of advice if you plan on doing the remote start, is to make a spare copy of your key before getting the alarm installed. You will have to purchase a bypass module which will house a copy of your key in the steering column somewhere so it will start(Due to chip in key). If you try to make a copy later you won't be able to reprogram the key in the module without yanking it out.

cant i make a copy of another key instead of taking they key out of the module and messing everything up?

i called 2 dealerships(one i bought my truck at and another one) and one quoted me about $100 and the other quoted me $150. just insane for a key.

also...

i just got back from a local shop that installs stereos/alarms/everything else for cars. anyways they quoted me $600 for the install which is $100 more than at best buy but the quality and everything else is much better. also the guy doing my install has a Titan which he installed an alarm into his so knows a bit about the Titan. they also recommended to put a hood pin and a back up battery in it for about an extra $170...do yall think that is a good price for that?

i have an appointment for this wednesday to get everything put in and i cant wait. i'll let yall know how it turns out...man i cant wait.

I wouldn't worry to much about the hood pin or the backup battery. To ope the hood they have to get inside your truck, if they try to force the hood open from outside the shock sensor should pick it up. Back when I was doing alarms, the back up battery was all junk. The shop I worked at eventually would not even put them in anymore.

You have to reprogram all the keys at the same time you get the new one made. That's why its better to get a key made prior to installing the alarm. I got one made by a local locksmith for $75 (he made key and reprogrammed all the keys). Apparently, in order to reprogram one extra key requires you to reprogram all of them.

As for the battery backup and hood pin its strictly optional. If someone wants to steal your car bad enough and they have the know how - they'll steal it regardless of your security system.

too bad they didnt offer my lojack when i bought the truck. instead of that they spent an hour going over the extended warranty, and i told them in the beginning that i didnt want it. bastards.

the way i figure it is that if someone is able to open my hood from the outside, between that time they first touch the truck and get the battery cable cut then i will have received signal and will be on my way outside armed. hopefully anyways

See, I don't understand why you guys want a alarm. If somebody steals my truck I rather never find it!, that way I get to buy a new truck... One of the reasons I bought a gap waiver...

OK, flame away!!

i have stuff in my truck that id rather not lose. gap wont cover that stuff. also id like to be warned before hand so i can try to stop them.

not only will you get a new truck if your's is stolen and never found but you will have to start over with payments which means all the money you paid for the other truck was just lost also. id hate that myself

I had the Python version of the remote starter/security system. Anyway, I would wait and see if they come out with the programable version of the bypass. I didn't like the idea of giving up a key. If you do give up a key, I would advise getting the key cut in half leaving the chip only.

I don't know if they will have a programable bypass for the Titan, but who knows. They have them for other vehicles including the new F-150.

I have the Clifford Intelligard 750. I had it installed for just under $500 without the door lock actuators in my XE. Here are some photos of the system including the hood sensor, the glass breakage senson and the valet switch.

well i got my Viper 791vx put in today and its great. alarm works great and the remote start is awesome, never had that before. no uses for it right now since its not really hot outside but winter is coming soon so it'll be more useful then. for now its just the "cool factor" of it...

Where did you end up getting it? How much? Did it void the factory warranty? (I does if they cut any factory wires...I think)

i got it done at a place up here in Springfield, VA called Underground Audio.

it was about $640 installed including the hood pin and everything that comes with the 791vx.

as far as they told me they didnt cut anything. they soldered the wires into place. didnt say anything about the factory warranty but then again i didnt ask. i did ask if i could just turn off the viper system and use my old key fob if i had to turn it into the dealer for work of any kind. so that was good.

the alarm has a lifetime warranty through the shop so if anything goes wrong at all i can bring it back and the'll take care of it.

Is that a warranty ANYwhere, or just at that shop? Thats my only apprehension on buying through a local shop..b/c who's to say they won't be out of business in a year. I don't know...just thinking out loud.

i agree with you on the warranty thinking.

the place has been there a couple years so i hope it doesnt go anywhere anytime soon.

if it does then i have the warranty from viper if anything else. if something happens then i'll see what i can do then...who knows.
