: Secure Your Rear Sliding Window.....Cheap & Easy Mod
RockyMtnTitan 08-31-2005, 05:24 PM Well since I've read at least two threads on how easy it is to break into our trucks via the rear slider, I came up with an easy fix for anyone interested.
By drilling a hole and installing a simple 1/4" dia ring pin w/ detent, you can prevent the release catch from being manipulated and opened from the outside of the truck. Just leave the pin in place until you need to open the window, at which point, just pull it, open the window and reinsert pin...easy. The pin fits snug and will not fall out or rattle around while driving.
This whole mod takes only a couple minutes...tops.
1.) Drill 1/4" hole in plastic lock release.....drill as close to the outer lock housing (see pic).
2.) Insert 1/4" ring pin. ($2 @ Lowe's)
3.) There is no "3", cuz you're done! :D
baseballfanz 08-31-2005, 06:48 PM Good job man, be great for the army type guys to practice pulling pins out af grenades.
TheSquid 08-31-2005, 06:53 PM I just might replace my dowel rod with that.
Thanks.
My luck, I'd drill thru the window.... :beating:
RockyMtnTitan 09-01-2005, 12:07 AM I just might replace my dowel rod with that.
Thanks.
Yeah, a few people recommended the dowel rod, or similar fix....and I was planning on doing the same. It looked like that might not stay in place too well, or rattle a bit, so I chose this method instead. You could even paint the ring pin black and would be hardly noticable.
JetTech 09-01-2005, 03:00 AM And yet another awesome mod from the rock man!!! Mind if I move this to the how-to section???

Yeah, I like it and plan on doing it this weekend.
You the man! :D
Flight_Test 09-01-2005, 08:01 AM The dowels I had on hand were to thick, so I scratched around and found some unused wooden paint stirrers. I trimmed one to fit, wrapped it in Teflon tape and left a small "tail" so I could remove it easily. It fits snugly in the channel. An old yardstick would work as well.
NateL 09-02-2005, 12:18 AM Good idea. I've thought about doing something like this, but then I thought if someone really wants to break into that little window and crawl into my truck, I'll let them. I think its kinda funny.

Finding them stuck in that little window the following morning before going to work.....now that would be priceless. Talk about having someone exactly where ya want them.
NateL 09-02-2005, 02:11 AM Locks keep honest people honest to an extent. I think anyone that would climb into the bed of my truck to try to open the back window would probably go ahead and break it out if they couldn't get it open.
Not knocking this mod at all though, looks like a really good idea. I just have a screwed up world perspective.
I figured since I just shelled out some dough for speakers and an amp, that this probably would be a good idea...
Naturally, being as easy it is - I screwed it up....
I started drilling and the latch cracked in half and crumbled out of there - drill slipped and broke the plastic housing on the window....
Looks like I'll be investing in a yard stick....
goval 09-05-2005, 10:23 PM You know there's a clamp at home depot that you can buy for $3.00 to secure/lock sliding doors/windows? It's a little 1" clamp-like piece at the door handles and locks section. No drilling necessary, just place it on the rails of the sliding window and it will prevent it form sliding
JetTech 09-06-2005, 08:23 AM That's a good idea too goval. If you explore this option please post it here. I'm going to move this to the how to section now that its had lots of exposure in the general section.

I looked and picked up one that had the widest opening I could find - still would not fit over the rail....

That's a bummer, Phrt! 8O Yeah, the plastic drills like butter....mine drilled nice and clean...no cracking, chipping, etc.

Hmmmm... I think I'm going to try this tomorrow just to help out, those things are cheap anyway. I'll post something if I find out.
goval 09-07-2005, 08:52 PM No, I saw lots of those clamps at Home Depot and Lowes, but no luck either on finding one that will fit.
I think RockyMtn's idea is the only one that will work.
Still hasitated about drilling there though, if you mess up, then what? Can you order just that little lock?

Doesn't look like it. I messed up the part that is attached to the window as well. Is it actually part of the window or is it on there with adhesive that can be removed?

Then ain't no way I'm messing with it. I live around a good neighborhood.
I'll continue working on this untill I figure something out. It was a good idea to bring this issue up and the initial mod is great, I was looking at the lock, and a pin there will actualy prevent the window from even being forcefuly sled. Great idea RockyMtn!
RockyMtnTitan 09-07-2005, 10:38 PM Oh, c'mon you scaredy cat! Just use a sharp bit and be gentle with the drill pressure...easy-peasy....honest!
firecracker 09-07-2005, 10:53 PM That's a GREAT IDEA!!!
Thanks!
RIDER 08-25-2006, 06:20 PM Great idea, RockyMtnTitan!

Edit: I just saw he was banned, so he'll never see my response. oh well. lol
