I have a fellow Titaneer/CT member who has requested I make them a custom wood dash out of leopard wood. http://www.woodworkerssource.net/Merchant3/graphics/woods/leopardwood.jpg
I have all the tools but what I'm lacking in is
1.) The thickness of the wood.
2.) Pictures of the different pieces that are being used on the Titan.
3.) I assume that 3m double-back tape is being used. Is it one piece across the whole back or just pieces strategically placed.
4.)Any suggestions from someone who has bought and installed one of these kits as to what could have made it better.
If I could get some help and I'm successful in my attempt to do this I'd be sure to repay anyone who saw fit to help with something special made out of wood.
Thanks,
The_Squid.

I saw your post much earlier today but I don't have a clue about making a wooden dash. Would you use a extremely thin slab of wood in order to conform to curves? Seems like a major undertaking.
How are you at making wooden false teeth? Maybe that is something I might have use for far in the future, if ever (hopefully). :D
I'd like to see pictures of the project if you decide to undertake it. Sounds interesting.

I have installed a wood dash kit...It is 3M backing and the wood is basically veneer (super thin) so it is flexible...also it would need a clear coat laminate of some sort..I have no idea how to make them, that's why I went with Burtman!

Hi,
From the pic it resembles lacewood.
The biggest problem you will face is finding a finish that will hold up in the heat. I believe they use catalyzed resins. More than most of us can deal with. A quart would cover a hundred dash kits maybe?
Real wood kits are made more flat than the simulated ones: reason being that wood can be bent in only one direction at a time. This is especially true of delicate veneers with grain that changes direction anyway (burls and curly-grained cuts).
Good luck.

I have wood that is similiar to that. Doing this yourself would be extremely hard and time consuming.
You can check out my site for many pics of titan dash kits.

Thanks but I've got a handle on it. The guy wants a one of a kind custom job. "Don't worry JasonB I'm not trying to horn in on your mass produced turf." Just helping a friend get a one of a kind interior.
It's really not that hard if you Know wood and have the right tools.

Not at all. I love custom mods and this sound pretty cool. It's just not as easy as it sounds, but can be a really "fun" project. If you need anything, feel free to email me.

I really appreciate that I went to your site and nosed around (Pretty nice site if I do say so myself)
Right now, I'm resawing the boards to different thicknesses to see which will work the best. The way I plan to do it the grain on the passenger side will be an exact copy of the grain on the drivers side for each piece. I hope that visually this will give a mirror effect that will be flowing and pleasing to the eye. We'll see.
Thanks again.

The wood veneer I used in my classic works well and it has adhesive on the back! The veneer is pliable but, you must be careful not to crack it !! I got mine in a kit made for my car, it looks great!! I did the interior myself.
I can send pics. They were to big for the forum.
