: having audio problem, very stumped
jaysplaypen 11-26-2005, 07:27 PM Okay, so I moved my subs and amp tot he new titan, and it was working, but it would short out the whole system if you turned it up over 8, untill you unplugged the left lead in. Then trying to figure it out, it started doing it on the right side to. So thinking the ebay used purchased amp was dying I go and get another one. This amp from ebay had lived a few years and for 30 bucks it has earned its keep. As Most of you know I am not into the thump sound, but i do use the amp and subs to complete the sound, so I just got a cheap 200 W amp from walmart, more than enough for me.
Now I can not get the new one to work for nothing. So I plugger back in the old one, and it is wired the same, and works until you turn it up to much. I think the new one I got was bad. Is it possible the new one is bad, or is 200 watt to small to power the 2 subs.
Crazy_Steve 11-26-2005, 07:33 PM How big are your subs?
The 200 could easily be too small...
Try it with one sub and see if it will power it.

2 subs
I did go and try it after I said that, and it still powers up, but nothing comes out of it. When I plug the old one in it works fine until I turn it up. I checked all the wiring and that is all the same, as in the other truck.
So really stumpped
Crazy_Steve 11-26-2005, 07:56 PM All I can think of is that they're trying to draw more power than the system can give them...
Try a bigger amp?
Or call up a car audio place and ask them what they think?

The power light comes on. The amp has the little screw terminals, that I ran the leads out to the subs from. Those are the technical terms I am sure. J/K. The leads in and out are the same on the 2 amps, I think. I went and returned it, since it was a little small, and I was settling for what they had. I did re-run the RCA from the Stereo to the amp, and I am getting a better connection to the old amp, but it still shorts out but now after I turn it up to 13 or 14. I rarely ever turn it up like that, so maybe I will just deal with it for now, and watch for someone getting rid of one.
Rossi 11-27-2005, 08:48 AM What OHM rating does your speakers have. If you have a 8 ohm amp and your running a couple3-4 ohm bass speakers it will pull too hard and send the amp into protection when you turn it up.

Exactly what I was thinking, you always have to pay attention to the ohms. If the OHMs on the subs/speakers are higher than the amp, put some transistors on the subs to level it with the amp or vice-versa; keep adding 1 OHM transistors at the time untill you get the volume all the way up and the way you want it. You can get these transistors at you local Radio Shack.
jaysplaypen 11-27-2005, 12:24 PM sounds like an idea, but it has worked forever just fine, until I put it in the new truck. I have had these speakers for a long time. They have always been dependable good sounding speakers, so no reason to change them. The amp I got a couple of years ago on ebay, it was in the GTP when I drove it, was put in the 05 and now the 06. It has olny started having the problem in the 06. So I might have messed it up. I will have to re-do everything, and see it is me, or the amp is finally dying.
Thanks for the ideas. I will try a few things, for now it does work I will just have to watch for a descent amp.
Blue_Water_Rush 11-27-2005, 09:03 PM If you have a multi-tester you could isolate the problem, first check for continuities at connections then start with signal source, to amplification to speakers. Are those dual voice coil drivers? if so how do you have them wired? This affects the load the amp sees. You could be under-powering the amp.
:?
jtrich 11-28-2005, 05:32 AM Make sure you have a good power and ground connection. If it is not sufficient, it might not be feeding the amp what it needs when you crank it up.
