: im new and need some audio help!!!!
freak8 11-29-2005, 06:42 PM this is a great site. thanks for all the help and ideas for my ne(new to me) 04 Titan.im new to forums and posting on them so i hope im doing this right. i love it and lovedriving it. i have got a question about the factory head unit and adding subs. i bought 2 kicker comp 10 to go into a box under the rear seat and dont know what size amp to use to make these sound really good and clear. and also what do i need to connect the the whole thing together with the factory head unit. thanks for any help
tjmutlow 11-29-2005, 07:08 PM You need a Line out converter if you want to keep the factory head unit and an Amp kit. do those subs have one voice coil or two(where wires hook up to it, it could have a positive and negative on either one side or both sides) As far as an amp, it depends on your budgewt, but i would recommed the JL 500/1 it is a nice and clean amp. Try to find a decent used one on ebay. And you will of course need the box
freak8 11-29-2005, 07:35 PM thanks a lot. not dure on the voice coils but will make sure. i bought the subs and box as a package deal on ebay for 270 with shipping. i thought it was a great deal. how much does a line converter run?
SimplyTitan 11-30-2005, 08:49 AM a good one is about $20- $25. You can buy a cheap one for a lot less. i bought mine at Circuit City. I went with a new head unit though after..Sounded a lot better with a more powerful HU.
The 500/1 uses differential balanced inputs so no converters are needed. Something like this makes the connection very easy. http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_connections_detail.php?cat_id=5
If you don't need to add stuff in the signal path, you shouldn't.
freak8 11-30-2005, 04:34 PM thanks guys for all the help. and good suggestions for some mids and highs. i dont want to spend to much on a whole system so something i can use with out and amp.
freak8 11-30-2005, 04:36 PM oh i forgot to ask are there any diagrams on how to get the factory head unit in and out with out destroying it?
SimplyTitan 12-01-2005, 04:33 PM If I remember correctly, once you pull off the thr fornt radio bezel, there are 4 screws that you take out and the whole thing will come out.
Blue_Water_Rush 12-03-2005, 07:15 PM oh i forgot to ask are there any diagrams on how to get the factory head unit in and out with out destroying it?
There is no need to remove the head unit to add the subs. If you take JLTD's advice (he works for JL Audio I believe) and if you use the JL Audio 500/1 Slash series amp, all you do is tap a left & right speaker lead in the door threshold channel with the cable he suggested, and plug the RCAs to the amp. The Slash amp has signal sensing, so once you turn on the HU the amp automatically turns on. Also the amp has infrasonic filtering to help protect the subs from over-excursion. Just run a 4 ga. power lead from the battery, ground the amp well to the nearest seat bracket, then when all the connections are made, disconnect the sub speaker leads from the amp, then use a test CD (104) and play a track recorded at 0 db @ 40hz with the volume at 3/4 and the bass, mid & treble adjustments at 0 (flat). Use a volt meter and adjust the imput sensitivity of the amp to the target voltage indicated in the amp manual for however the speakers are wired (assuming they are dual voice coil). These amps are stable from 1.5 to 4 ohm. So if you have dual 4 ohm subs, and wire them each in series, you would shoot for a target voltage of 31.6 volts. Do not go higher than that, although you could go a little lower. This is the maximum undistorted power level. Once you've done that, you're all set. You can then re-connect your speakers and adjust your filter frequency to around 70 hz and your bass boost to at least 3 db, but your own ear will determine how you want your settings to balance to the factory system. Another nice thing about these amps is that they have regulated power supplies, so no matter how you wire the speakers, you'll get 500 watts out of he amp.
freak8 12-03-2005, 10:57 PM thanks for that. but would it be easier to just pull the head unit or will the sound performance be better the way you described??
Blue_Water_Rush 12-03-2005, 11:04 PM If you're adding subs & amp to an existing factory system, what need is there of removing the HU?
freak8 12-03-2005, 11:32 PM good point i was just asking didnt mean anything by my last post.
how much does that anp run??
Blue_Water_Rush 12-04-2005, 10:10 AM Yo Freak,
heres a page with a couple 500/1 amps. (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&fcl=3&catref=C5&frpp=50&from=R10&satitle=JL+Audio&sacat=293%26catref%3DC6&bs=Search&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fgtp=&fmmk=&fmmd=&fylo=&fyhi=&mppfQy=Nissan+Titan&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=ZIP%2FPostal&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=) Buying used can save a lot of money, no warranty though. Just check the feedback ratings of the sellers. If you buy new, I would guess you'd pay upward of $400.00 but will have a JL warranty. These amps are well protected against abuse with special circuitry, so buying a used one shouldn't present any problems.
freak8 12-04-2005, 07:15 PM thanks blue water for all the help. you have been great and a lot of help.
zimmy0615 12-05-2005, 01:43 AM well - if your looking for something on the less expensive end with plenty of power, i've got a nice 2 channel amplifier, performance teknique, mind condish, (1200 watts) that will easily power those subs. no, you dont NEED that much power, but its always always always better to have more than you need, trust me!
anyhoo - i'll ask for $90 plus shipping if your interested. can post pics if need be, just lemme know
