I'm pleased with the thump of the stock stereo and like the 6disk in-dash, but the mid and high levels seem to be lacking and i hate that i can't play mp3s, so i'm looking for suggestions on a decently priced (including install), good solid sounding stereo. I don't need my socks blown off, but i like the rumble and good sound. Is it as simple as going to Best Buy or Car Toys, or will i need to head elsewhere? I've read all the different reviews on the boards here and see good/bad opinions about everything. It being christmas time, i'd like to not break the bank, but come out with something good.

Oh, and it'd be nice to be able to hear over the Flowmaster.

thanks

There will be no less than 20 opinions, and here is the first.

I had a Kenwood HU in mine for a while. You can buy the needed dash bazel from one of the many great supporting vendors. This is best way. Then you can get the needed wiring harness to adapt your new HU into the factory harness. I got mine at Walmart for like 7 bucks I think. As to which one to use. Go to any steroe shop near you and lsiten to them, and read about them either here, or at Crutchfield.com This will help you narrow down the selection by the requirements you have. AM/FM/CD/MP3 and what not. Only other piece of advise. be careful when seperating the dash bazel. Those little clips can be like shrapnel, and are a B*tch to find on the carpet. Good Luck.

I need to show my ignorance here, but what does HU stand for? And would buying the harness be something i just take to the installers to use? Why do i need a new harness?

And you've reminded me of a concern that i've had in the past when having aftermarket systems installed is that these places tend to crack the dash or door when intalling and i really hate that.

My bad...

HU means Head Unit. as in the strere or replacement for your stock stereo. The harness you will need is an adapter harness to make the aftermarket radio work with your trucks wiring. This simplifies the install and keeps you from having to go to a stereo shop to get it done. Scosche and Metra are the two manufactures for these that I am aware of. Get the one for 95 model and up Nissans and you will be Golden. You have a large selection of radios in the 159 to 249 dollar range with more options than you might need. This is why I suggested looking into the brands to make sure you get the one that best suits your needs and wants. Cosmeticaly, anything you put in the dash will have the same look. Only real difference will be lighting. This is something you can do yourself and save a few sheckles. The wires are color matched, and instructions are easy to follow. The only scary part is prying your dash apart the first time. Just remember it is plastic, and replaceable. These things have been like "Snap-Tite" model kits for years. Get'er Done
