Left axle shaft has groove

I have an 05 with 197,00 miles. Noticed oil drip on dirvers side rear wheel. Pulled the axle shaft out. Bearing was wore out really bad. Metal shavings thur out the rear end. Proceeded to completely clean the diff. It is ready to put back together. One problem, the drives side axle shaft has a groove in it. Question is, can i still use it or do I replace the whole assembly? And number two, where can I get one. No luck anywhere but the dealer. Any help will be great.

Jim

Try JustDifferentials.com. They have entire axle assemblies for sale but may have just the shafts. The grooves are why Nissan put together a kit for when the axle seals leak. They said that just replacing the seal isn't good enough because of the grooving.

Take axle to a good machine shop. They can weld the groove up then turn it back down to bearing spec in a lathe. Done a few of these on trucks and four wheelers.

I want to say thank you for the response. I took it to the machine shop and they wouldn't touch it. It was nice that they was up front and admitted they couldn't do it. Called 2 Nissan dealers, niether one new about kit. So I called JustDifferentials.com, I have a complete axel shaft assembly coming. Wasn't cheap, but the truck is worth it. JustDifferentials.com was so easy to deal with. 15 minutes and I was done. Thanks again.

I guess they did t want to be liable if you had a failure of some sort. Just out of curiosity, what did an axle cost you?

The new axle cost me 519.00. That was not in the budget and it hurt. Ordered it from local dealer and had it in 2 days. I did both sides and what a difference it made. Rides like a new truck. Have another question, the 4WD worked great until yesterday. When I engage the 4WD, it makes a claking noise like the gears are not meshing. Put it back in 2WD and it stops. Could it be the servo that engages the front differential not working correctly?

One quick note, I replaced the drvers side axle and just bearing, seal, and race on passenger. Total cost was 519 for axle and 127 for kit.
